This is actually the first design in my Dip-Dyed series – originally designed for the June 2019 issue of Knotions Magazine!
This bag is worked using a simple single crochet stitch worked into the back loop to create this fun, ribbed pattern paired with a trendy color block pattern. It’s finished with a snap button, but an alternative to this would be to leave off the flap, crochet a chain loop instead, and sewing on a respective sized button.

Materials:
- 50 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the Sunshine and Ecru colorways
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
- Optional, Stitch Marker
- Size 2 Snap Button
- Sewing Needle and Thread (I recommend Silamide)
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Red Heart’s Smoothie, WeCrochet Dishie
I recommend cotton yarn because it’s more durable, and this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and being pulled and pushed around in a larger bag/purse.
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
If using Silamide thread for sewing, cut 2 identical strands, thread through needle, fold over, and knot. If using regular sewing thread for sewing, cut 3. This is needed for added strength, and security when sewing on buttons.
Measurements:
2 ⅞” wide [or about 5.75” in circumference] by 6 ⅛” tall
Gauge:
In BLO Pattern worked in the round: 17 SC by 15 Rows = 3.88”
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- BLO – Back Loop Only
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Notes:
This case should fit most sunglasses, but make sure to measure your sunglasses to be sure! To adjust case the width, add or subtract chains to the foundation. For each 1 chain added or subtracted, the final stitch count will change by 2.
This case is worked in a continuous round, meaning no slip stitch join at the end of the round, to avoid a seam. Use a stitch marker, or piece of scrap yarn to mark the first stitch of each round. If you choose to slip stitch join at the end of the round instead, it will produce a moving seam, and change the overall height of your case.
Switch to new yarn color in last yarn over of previous stitch. I have a basic photo tutorial if needed, How to Change Yarn Colors in Crochet.
Pattern:
In Sunshine, chain 11. Work 2 HDC into the 3rd chain, and the next 7 chains, 3 HDC into the next chain, HDC into the next 7 chains, HDC back into the 1st stitch. Slip stitch join in the BLO of the 1st stitch. (20 HDC)
R2 – 11: In BLO, SC into the next 20 stitches.
R12 – 20: Switch to Ecru, and fasten off Yellow. In BLO, SC into the next 20 stitches.
R21, Begins Flap: Slip stitch in the next stitch, turn. Slip stitch into the next stitch, turn again to the Right Side. Chain 1. SC into the 1st 4 stitches. (4 SC)
R22 – 26: Chain 1, turn. SC across. (4 SC)
Fasten off, and weave in ends.
Sew on Snap Button:
Grab the fat part, and position it centered at the bottom edge of the WS of the flap with the nub facing down. With sewing needle, and thread, sew in place.
Grab the skinny part of the snap button, and mirror it on the case body with the nub facing you. Mirrored location should be about 4 rows down from the top. Sew in place.
