C2C Snowman Hat Washcloth – Free Crochet Pattern

December 3, 2021

Free crochet pattern for how to crochet a washcloth that has a snowman hat using half double crochet corner to corner boxes. 3 sizes included!

This post contains affiliate links for WeCrochet, Lion Brand and LoveCrafts. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.

This washcloth was inspired by C2C Leprechaun Hat Washcloth. It was an easy modification simply leaving off the bucket, and making the ribbon a little thicker. I may go back to add an embellishment on the hat.

This corner to corner pattern is worked in half double crochets, which allows for less space between each square which makes for a sturdier, more functional washcloth, but you still get the great texture of the corner to corner stitch pattern, and ease in creating the graphic.

If you’re new to corner to corner or need a refresher, I have a photo tutorial for C2C in HDC.

AD-FREE, PRINTER FRIENDLY PDF:

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • 91 (128, 170) Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie in White, Black and Fiesta Red; You will need 14 Yards for Ribbon, 23 Yards for Hat & 54 (91, 133) Yards for Background
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

I worked the Small size, and estimated the yardages for the other sizes based on this one.

Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Bernat Handicrafter, Red Heart’s Smoothie, Lion Brand Re-Up, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, Rico Creative Cotton Aran.

If the finished size is essential to you, to achieve the same sizes in this pattern using Lily Sugar n Cream or Bernat Handicrafter, try using a G6/4.25mm crochet hook.

If you wanted to use this an afghan square instead, some great yarns I recommend are {wools} WeCrochet Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease, {non-wools} WeCrochet Brava, and Red Heart Super Saver with an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.

Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.

Time Spent:

  • Small: 1 hour, 25 minutes
  • Medium: 1 hour, 45 minutes

Measurements:

  • Small: 7.25″ (or 1/4″) Square
  • Medium: 8.31″ (or 8 5/16″) Square
  • Large: 9.38″ (or 3/8″) Square

Originally, I worked the C2C Leprechaun Hat washcloth in Lily Sugar n Cream. Following the same patterns below with Lily Sugar n Cream and a H8/5mm, and a Gauge of 7 Squares = 4 1/16″, the Small size will come to 7.75″, while the Medium size will come to 9.13″.

Gauge:

7 Squares = 3.75″ (or 3 3/4″)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • C2C – Corner to Corner (HDC Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

A box is comprised of three half double crochets.

This pattern is written with colors and boxes only. If you would like more details on how to work the corner to corner technique, check out my Corner to Corner in Half Double Crochet Photo Tutorial.

For the border, you want to work your chain 1 loosely so the finished washcloth will lay flat. If you crochet tightly, I recommend going up one hook size for the border only, otherwise it may cup.

Each round of the border adds 0.25″ to the height and width. It would look really cute worked with one white round, one red round (or whatever color you pick your ribbon) and one white round.

If you want to add additional rounds to the border, single crochet into each single crochet and chain 1 space around. In the corner chain 1 space, work a (single crochet, chain 1, single crochet). Slip stitch join at the end to the first stitch.

Ends:

Use your crochet hook to pull all of your ends to the wrong side of the washcloth – technically, any side can be the right or wrong side, I look to the first boxed worked to determine my right side. Weave in ends.
