It’s nearly February and hearts are everywhere you look. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not against Valentine’s Day at all! But I couldn’t resist the opportunity to create something that is the antithesis of the usual cutesy symbol of love. Let me introduce you to the Poisoned Heart.
It looks like a classic heart, drenched in a thick coating of poison, forming the beginning of a skull. And I think it is a fantastic twist on tradition. The color combination prospects here are endless too! I chose to stick with typical Valentine’s Day colors because I thought it was fun to do pink and red with the darker style of the project.
Materials I Used:
- Red Heart Super Saver Yarn in Cherry Red & Light Raspberry
- G6/4.25mm crochet hook
- Poly-fil
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Doll needle
- Stitch marker
- Poisoned Heart, Paid Crochet Pattern from FayniToys via Etsy
Material Notes:
I chose a larger hook and a heavier weighted yarn as to make my heart larger. The original pattern calls for sport weight yarn and a hook size to match with the yarn. I used a yarn needle to weave in the ends of my yarn but I used the long doll needle to stitch the drips onto the heart as it is thinner and it slides through the poly-fil so much easier!
Time Spent:
This heart took 3 hours to make. I was actually kind of surprised that it only took that long for me, as I am not a fast crocheter and this pattern has a few intricacies to work with. The drips took an hour alone to stitch onto the heart!
Measurements:
My heart comes in at approximately 6 inches tall by 6 inches wide and about 2 inches thick. It is a very nice size for a plushie.
Gauge:
There was no gauge indicated for this pattern. In fact, the pattern even reminds you that your heart could end up a different size given everyone’s differences in tension.
Pattern Notes:
The pattern is relatively easy. As I mentioned, there are some detailed components; they aren’t hard to crochet but they do require more attention to your work. This is not a mindless project to do in front of the television.
There are also QR codes included that will take you directly to the YouTube videos of how to do the more complex parts. Overall, this poisoned heart turned out great and I am definitely making a few more in other colors. This would make a great gift for that friend that hates Valentine’s Day or to bring out again at Halloween!
