It’s me, Candace with T&C Crafters.

If you haven’t yet discovered the Fable Collection by Oak and Marlow, you are truly missing out! Not only did Jocelyn of Oak and Marlow design the extremely popular Mabel Chicken pattern, but she also designed an entire collection of adorable animals that look like dolls and can be dressed up!

Each member of the Fable Collection includes its own outfit or accessory that can be interchanged with all the other animals. I am truly in awe of how cute these doll-like animals are, and I love all the attention to detail she put into designing them and their wardrobes!

While I love all the animals in the Fable Collection and can’t wait to make each of them up, I think the Finn Bear has been my favorite one to make so far! The Finn Bear is a super cute and simple bear that gives off classic cottage-core vibes. The pattern comes with outfits to dress him up or you can leave him as is for a more simplistic look. In addition, Oak and Marlow just released a free modification to turn the Finn Bear into a baby bear, which makes the perfect little teddy bear!

I have made about a dozen Finn Bears and a handful of Finn Baby Bears so far, and I can’t wait to make more! This pattern is so easy to follow and quick to make up. I’m sure if you try it out, you’ll be just as hooked as I am!

Finn Bear Crochet Pattern Review

What Do You Need to Crochet a Finn Bear?

  • Super Bulky Yarn – I used Bernat Blanket and Yarn Bee Snugs & Kisses
  • K10.5/6.5 mm Crochet Hook – I used my favorite Clover Amour ergonomic hook!
  • Stuffing
  • Yarn Needle – I recommend using a steel needle.
  • 12 mm Black Safety Eyes or 10 mm Black Felt Eyes
  • Finn Bear, paid crochet pattern by Oak and Marlow via Etsy

Material Notes:

The Finn Bear pattern calls for super bulky yarn. In the pattern, the designer shares that her samples were made with Bernat Blanket Yarn and Premier Basix Chenille Brights. I used Bernat Blanket Yarn and Yarn Bee Snugs & Kisses when making my Finn Bears.

I have also tried out this pattern using different weights of yarn, including bulky and worsted weight. The pattern came out just as cute in the different yarn weights, so you can definitely make this pattern up with whatever weight yarn you like! When I made my smaller Finn Baby Bear, I used Ella Rae Cuddle Yarn. I also used Loops and Threads Soft Classic and Loops and Threads Petite Purl to make some really tiny Finn Baby Bears for newborn photo props.

The pattern calls for a 7 mm crochet hook to be used with super bulky yarn. I opted for a K10.5/6.5 mm hook instead because that is what I typically use for this weight of yarn. When working with worsted weight yarn, I used a G6/4 mm hook. When working with bulky yarn, I used a 4.5 mm hook.

Both the Finn Bear and the Finn Baby Bear use very little stuffing. For the Finn Bear, you will just need to stuff the legs, body, and head. In the Finn Baby Bear, the legs go unstuffed, so you will hardly use any stuffing – just enough for the smaller body and the head.

There is only a little bit of sewing involved in this pattern, but I still recommend you use a steel yarn needle, as it will make it easier to sew on the arms and ears and add the details to the face.

For the eyes of the bear, the pattern calls for 12 mm safety eyes. I personally do not like safety eyes, so I opted for 10 mm black felt eyes or embroidered eyes instead. You will also need a small amount of black worsted weight yarn to embroider the nose on the bear.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Finn Bear?

This is a really quick pattern! Once you get the hang of making the Finn Bear, you can easily make one in less than an hour!

What Size is a Finished Finn Bear?

The finished Finn Bear measures approximately 12 inches long and about 3 1/2 inches wide with its arms at its side. The Finn Baby Bear is about the same width, but only about 7 inches long.

Gauge:

Gauge is not provided in this pattern and is not critical for making stuffed toys like this. You mainly want to make sure that your hook size is appropriate for your yarn and that your stitches are tight enough together so that your stuffing doesn’t come out through holes between the stitches.

If you want your Finn Bear to come out to be the same size as mine, using super bulky weight 6 yarn (Bernat Blanket) and a K10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, a magic circle with 8 single crochets should measure approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

All About Making the Finn Bear:

Of all of the patterns I have used over the years, I have to tell you – I think Oak and Marlow has some of the absolutely best written patterns. The pattern comes with clear step-by-step directions, pictures to show every important step, and is set up in a really easy-to-follow format.

The Finn Bear and Finn Baby Bear are made starting with the legs. After crocheting both legs, you will connect them and then proceed to make the body and the head. The ears and the arms are both made separately and then sewed on at the end. This pattern is worked in the round throughout with only single crochets, increases, and decreases throughout, making it relatively beginner-friendly. While there are some low-sew components that could make it a little more challenging, the pictures provided in the pattern should be sufficient to help you figure it out.

The Finn Bear pattern also comes with some additional features that you can add to your finished Finn Bear. There is an additional pattern included for making a bee outfit with a matching bee hood. You can also modify the bee hood pattern to make a plain hood instead.
