With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, I’ve been brainstorming fun little Valentine’s gifts and looking for great patterns that would be fun for my kids to share with their friends. I had purchased the Camille the Caterpillar pattern from All From Jade awhile back, and figured that now would be a good time to try it out using my Ella Rae Cuddle yarn in shades of pink.
I love how cute the finished Camille the Caterpillar is! Made with Ella Rae Cuddle yarn, it’s soft and squishy and the perfect gift for a little one on Valentine’s Day! This pattern was extremely well-written and included everything from photo and video tutorials, a bulk-making checklist, a coloring page to design your own caterpillar, and information for adapting the pattern to almost any weight of yarn. I am definitely adding this to my list of go-to patterns for fun gifts and can’t wait to make some for my market prep!

What Materials Do You Need to Crochet Camille the Mini Caterpillar?
- Worsted Weight or Bulky/Super Bulky Yarn – I used Ella Rae Cuddle in Azalea and Flamingo
- G6/4.25 mm Crochet Hook – I used my Clover Amour Ergonomic Hook!
- Yarn Needle
- Safety Eyes or Felt Eyes
- Camille the Mini Caterpillar, paid crochet pattern by AllFromJade via Etsy
Material Notes:
This pattern can be made in any weight 4, 5, 6, or 7 yarn. I chose to use Ella Rae Cuddle for this project because I like the velvety texture mixed with the strength provided by this yarn. The designer shares how to adapt the pattern and hook size for quite a few different types of yarn including Parfait XL Sprinkles, Basix Chenille Bright, Gumdrop, Parfait Chunky, and Little Bunny all from Premier Yarns.
The hook size for this pattern is dependent on the weight of yarn that you choose. If you are using one of the yarns mentioned in the pattern, the designer provides hook sizes for you to reference.
You will need either to use something to create the eyes of the caterpillar. If you choose to use safety eyes, the designer provides recommended sizes for each weight of yarn in the pattern. You could also use felt eyes, crochet eyes, or embroidered eyes.
There is no stuffing needed for this project! Instead, you can use your leftover yarn to lightly stuff the last piece of the caterpillar before attaching it. There is really not a lot of sewing, so the only thing you will need a yarn needle for is to connect the pieces of the caterpillar. If you watch the video tutorial for assembling the caterpillar, you can see how to do this step using just your crochet hook if you don’t have a good yarn needle.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet Camille the Mini Caterpillar?
Camille the Mini Caterpillar is a pretty quick make! I was able to make my first one in a little over an hour.
I anticipate that I will be able to make future ones more quickly now that I have the assembly down. If you are market-prepping these or making a bunch for a group of kids for a Valentine’s pattern, there is a checklist you can use to keep track of pieces and batch make them very quickly.

What Size is the Finished Camille the Mini Caterpillar?
Using the Ella Rae Cuddle yarn, my finished Camille the Mini Caterpillar is 5 inches long, 1.5 inches wide, and 1.75 inches tall.
If you are using another yarn weight, the size will vary. Within the pattern, the designer shares finished lengths for a variety of combinations of yarns and hook sizes. According to the sizes provided from pattern testers, the finished size can range from 4 inches to 10 inches.
Gauge (Not Essential)
Gauge is not provided in this pattern and is not really essential. There are suggested hook sizes listed in the pattern to coordinate with different weights of yarn, however, you can adjust your hook size to make the project more comfortable for you.
If you want to make your project the same size as mine, then using Ella Rae Cuddle yarn and a G6/4.25 mm hook, a magic circle with 6 SC should measure approximately 3/4 inch in diameter.
All About Making Camille the Mini Caterpillar:
The Camille the Mini Caterpillar is a really fun pattern to make! I love how the individual pieces can be made at different times and then put together to make such a cute little caterpillar. This is a great project for stash-busting!
If you follow the pattern completely, there are eight pieces made individually and then sewn together. To be able to complete this pattern, you should have some skill with working in the round and making amigurumi. The pattern is extremely clear and has video tutorials throughout. If you are a beginner, you should be able to work through all the helpful tips, videos, and pictures to figure it out.
I think my favorite part of this pattern is how versatile it is! You can make this pattern in so many different color combinations in almost any type of yarn. Within the pattern, the designer shares photos from multiple testers that tried out some really cool color combinations, including natural colors for caterpillars, an imitation of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, and rainbow caterpillars. There is even a coloring page included in the pattern that you can print and have someone color to pick their design!
One really great component of this pattern is the fact that there is no stuffing needed and no weaving in ends! All the ends are tied off and hidden within the design. That is seriously a game-changer if you want to make a squishy make and don’t have stuffing or are market-prepping and trying to keep costs down.
I highly recommend you try out this pattern from All From Jade! If you enjoy this pattern, there is also a similar pattern for a larger caterpillar, Chantal the Caterpillar. In addition, the designer has patterns for Patricia the Butterfly and Amanda the Bee made in a similar style.
