Raspberry Surprise Front Post Wine Cozy – Free Crochet Pattern

February 3, 2015

Two weeks ago, I worked up a wine cozy for gift giving. Today, I am sharing my Valentine version of it, and a free crochet pattern so you can work up one for yourself.

These are great because they are reusable. I don’t know about you, but I reuse gift bags when I give gifts. This cozy is something everyone will love to receive over and over again!

It’s also a great decor piece. For anyone who collects wine bottles. Place it in this cozy to display for the season.

*This is Day 2 of my 14 Day Valentines Craft Challenge. Make sure to tune back in every day for the next 12 days to receive your inspiration! Don’t forget to subscribe, and follow me on Bloglovin’!
**My 14 Days of Valentine’s Inspired Crafts Linky Party is now live. Please come link up your projects, recipes, stories, decor ideas, etc!

Materials:
     – 95 Yards(ish) of Worsted Weight Cotton – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Damask Ombre
     – H8/5mm Crochet Hook
     – Tapestry Needle to Weave in Ends – I like to use a #18, or #20.
     – Ribbon – I used Offray’s 5/8″ in a tan color (found at JoAnn‘s)
     – Flame Source – I used a candle, but you could also use a lighter

Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Bernat’s Handicrafter Yarn, Lion Brand’s Kitchen Cotton Yarn.
Cotton yarn is a little tougher when it comes to weaving in your ends. You will want a tapestry needle with a larger eye, and duller point otherwise, it will take you longer to weave in your ends and hurt your fingers from tugging at the needle and yarn.

Time Spent:
I was able to work up this cozy in about 45 minutes.

Measurements:
To fit the average bottle size of 3.25″ in diameter.

Gauge:
Using an H8/5mm Hook and Lily Sugar n Cream – 4″ x 4″
Chain 17, HDC in the 2nd chain, and each chain across. (16 HDC)
R2 – 10: Chain 1, turn. HDC in the 1st stitch, and in each stitch.
     Fasten Off.

Abbreviations:
     SC – Single Crochet
     HDC – Half Double Crochet
     DC – Double Crochet
BLO – Back Loop Only (See Pattern Notes below)
FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet (See Pattern Notes below)

Pattern Notes:
Join to the first stitch, not beginning chain.

Working in the Back Loop Only (BLO):

The arrow is pointing to the back loop.
You will insert your hook into the center of the stitch, working the stitch around this loop.
As you continue working into the back loop, you will notice a ridge forming.
In the end, you will notice this round begins to create a cup form.

Front Post Stitches:

The black lines indicate where the stitch loops are,
and the white lines indicate where the posts are.
In this pattern, we are working front post double crochets.
In this case, you will yarn over, insert your hook underneath the post,
and complete the double crochet stitch as your normally would.
This is how the pattern of this wine cozy will look.
The front post stitches are the raised ones.
Pattern:

Top Piece:

Chain 4. Join to form a ring. Chain 2, work 10 DC into the ring. Join. (10 DC)

R2: Chain 1. In the back loops only, SC in each stitch around. Join.

*I suggest stopping after Round 4 to weave in your beginning tail, otherwise, it may too tight to turn the crocheted piece inside out to complete the weaving.

R3 – 8: In both loops, Chain 2. Work a FPDC in the same space as the chain, and 1 DC in the next 4 stitches twice. Join.

Fasten Off, and Weave in Your Ends.

Body:
Chain 4. Join to form a ring. Chain 1, work 10 HDC into the ring. Join. (10 HDC)

R2: Chain 1. Work 2 HDC into each stitch around. Join. (20 HDC)

R3: Chain 1. Work 2 HDC into the first stitch, and 1 HDC into the next stitch, (2 HDC into the next stitch, and 1 HDC in the next stitch) around. Join. (30 HDC)

*Here the diameter should equal 3″.
You may want to take this opportunity to weave in your beginning tail piece.

R4: Chain 1. In the back loops only, SC in each stitch around.

R5 – 22: In both loops, Chain 2. Work a FPDC in the same space as the chain, and 1 DC in the next 4 stitches, (FPDC in the next stitch, and 1 DC in the next 4 stitches) around. Join.

Fasten Off, and Weave in Ends.

Bow:
Thread your needle with your ribbon, you may need to fold the ribbon in half to get it to fit through the eye of your needle. Alternatively, you can use a safety pin for ease in weaving the ribbon in and out.

I placed by ribbon in each out of every other post from Round 21 (shown in Round 22 above – I took it out afterwards and redid my threading). It should come out that your beginning tail piece and end tail piece of the ribbon are sticking out so you can tie them together to form a bow.
Without this ribbon, your cozy will not hug the bottle.

Cut your ribbon ends – I cut mine at a diagonal – and heat seal.
To heat seal, wave your ribbon end over a flame.
You do not want to leave it in the flame or it will burn your ribbon away.
In the photo I am imitating your ribbon being held over the flame – in reality, please use caution with the flame!
*If you don’t heat seal your ends, your ribbon will fray.

Please feel free to make and sell this Front Post Wine Cozy, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, please link to it instead.

Great gifts, and decor pieces! I made this one for a bottom of wine that was in a basket with two wine glasses as part of the dining room decor and I liked it so much, I left it on! Hehe.

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
