Yay! This is the first post of the year for the 2017 GrannySpiration Challenge! I am so excited to see what everyone has been working on, especially you! At the end of this post, you will find the information for this month’s giveaway, and link up.
I knew I wanted to create a hat with a solid granny square band, but wasn’t set on how I wanted the body to be. After some brainstorming and working, it hit me! The pair of a solid granny square and the traditional granny stitch pattern – and I LOVE it! Especially with the aqua and white color combo – a great wintery color combo. What I did not realize was that the white wouldn’t photograph well… I only managed one photo I loved. Will work on another color combo and get some more pictures up. You can also look forward to Toddler and Child sizes coming soon!
Materials:
– 120 Yards each of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart’s With Love in Iced Aqua and White
– I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
– #18 Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends & Sewing Closed
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternative: Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn
Yardage is estimated based on appearance of skein. I would estimate you could make at least three of these hats with one skein each, if not four.
Time Spent:
I didn’t realize that it took so long to finish because it seemed to work up so fast, but according to my math, was just under five hours. The band will take you the longest.
Measurements:
Band measures 10.25″ wide (when seamed). Hat is 10.25″ in length at the end of Round 16 (before seaming). Hat will fit average teen/adult.
Gauge:
First square measures 3″ x 3″.
Abbreviations:
DC – Double Crochet
SC – Single Crochet
sc2tog – Single Crochet Two Stitches Together (to decrease)
PLT – Pull Loop Through Joining Method
To PLT: Pull up on the loop on the hook, remove hook and reinsert from the right side of the previous square into the corresponding DC, pull loop through
Pattern Notes:
Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.
Beginning chain in every round except Round 1 of the hat body counts as a stitch.
In the hat body, count the chain spaces and the join in between the chain spaces each as individual stitches. At the end of the band, you should have 80 stitches.
I have a photo tutorial on working the Pull Loop Through Method over on The Stitchin’ Mommy. It’s so easy and fun, and I love the twisted look of the join.
Pattern:
1st Square:
Chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 2. 2 DC in the ring, chain 3, (3 DC into the ring, chain 3) 2x, 3 DC into the ring, chain 2. Join. (12 DC)
R2: Slip stitch over to the chain space. Chain 2. DC into the chain space, chain 3, 2 DC into the same chain space, DC into the next 3 DCs, [2 DC into the next chain space, chain 3, 2 DC into the same chain space, DC into the next 3 DCs] 3x. Join and Fasten Off. (28 DC)
2nd – 7th Squares:
Chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 2. 2 DC in the ring, chain 3, (3 DC into the ring, chain 3) 2x, 3 DC into the ring, chain 2. Join. (12 DC)
R2: Slip stitch over to the chain space. Chain 2. DC into the chain space, chain 1, working from behind SC into the chain 3 of the previous square, chain 1. (DC into the chain space of the current square, PLT) 2x, (DC into the next DC of the current square, PLT) 3x, (DC into the next chain space of the current square, PLT) 2x, chain 1, working from behind SC into the chain 3 of the previous square, chain 1.
Remaining into the current square: 2 DC into the chain space, DC into the next 3 DCs, [2 DC into the next chain space, chain 3, 2 DC into the same chain space, DC into the next 3 DCs] 2x. Join, and Fasten Off. (28 DC)
8th Square – Joins the Band:
In current square: 2 DC into the chain space, DC into the next 3 DCs, 2 DC into the next chain space, chain 1, working from behind SC into the chain 3 of the first square, chain 1.
(DC into the chain space of the current square, PLT) 2x, (DC into the next DC of the current square, PLT) 3x, (DC into the chain space of the current square, PLT) 2x, chain 1, working from behind SC into the chain space of the first square, chain 1.
Remaining into the current square: 2 DC into the chain space, DC into the next 3 DCs. Join, but don’t fasten off – continue onto Round 1 of the body.
Hat Body R1: Chain 1. (sc2tog, SC into each of the next 2 stitches) 20x. Join, with White and Fasten Off Aqua. (60 SC)
R2: Chain 2. 2 DC into the same stitch, skip the next 2 SCs, (3 DC into the next SC, skip the next 2 SCs) 19x. Join. (20 clusters)
R3 – 16: Slip stitch over to the space. Chain 2. 2 DC into the same space, skip the 3 DC cluster, (3 DC into the next space, skip the next cluster) 19x. Join. (20 clusters)
Fasten Off with a long tail. Pull up on the final loop, turn the hat inside out so wrong side is facing. Thread the tapestry needle and weave in and out of every other stitch to close up the top. Once back to the beginning, pull tight to close and sew to secure.
Weave in all ends, and Enjoy! If you are feeling adventurous, I think a pom pom made from the contrasting color would be so cute on the top!

I always like specialty yarn giveaways, like alpaca or yak.I would spend my card money on patterns.
Yak is an interesting idea – haven't seen any Yak yarn, but now I will have to go looking for some. I am definitely going to have some yarn to giveaway throughout the year. Stay tuned 🙂
Must do some window shopping on Etsy. I'm sure to find some wonderful patterns or must have yarn.
I have so many patterns bought, and favorited! Just not enough hours to work them all…::sighs::…
I'd like to see a unique yarn bowl as a give-away.

Would love to see videos on how to do some of these pattrens. For people like me who can't seem to get the hang of reading pattrens.
Videos is something I really want to be able to do! I'm saving up for a new computer, and camera.
I would probably by a few hats or yarns. Not real sure. ? Thank you for the changes to to win.
There are so many hand dyed yarns I have read about and favorited, but I'd probably just end up spending more on patterns. Such talented designers out there!
