C2C Potted Tulip Square – Free Crochet Pattern

April 21, 2020

This is a free crochet pattern for how-to make my C2C Potted Tulip Square! 5 pillow sizes available.

Welcome to the April Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen!

This month’s theme is Mother’s Day!

My mom’s favorite flower is a tulip. In Florida, they don’t grow quite like they do in cooler places, so we can buy them on Mother’s Day, but they don’t usually last very long.

Over the last few years, I have tried to give my mom tulips that won’t die – like the Tulip Field Earrings I made several years back.

My inspiration this month comes from THIS TULIP QUILT from Bee in my Bonnet on Etsy. You can find more Spring inspiration and DIYS in my Seasonal: Spring board.

I created a fun corner to corner version that I will use to make a throw pillow, but the square can also be used to create a throw blanket.

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrochet Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Materials:

  • Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart’s Super Saver in White, Cherry Red and Tea Leaf [Green], and Bernat’s Super Value in Topaz
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

Yards – Only the 14″ and 16″ squares have been tested:

  • 14″ square requires 190 yards of yarn total, and 16″ requires 230 yards.
  • It’s estimated that the 22″ requires 380 yards, and the 24″ requires 500 yards.

Yarn Alternatives: Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value.

Time Spent:

The 14″ size worked up in just over three hours.

Measurements:

14″, 16″, 18″, 22″, 24″

Gauge:

5 Boxes = 4.25″ Wide by 4.13″ Tall

Abbreviations:

  • DC – Double Crochet
  • SC – Single Crochet

Pattern Notes:

Square grows from the bottom right corner upward.

This pattern is written with colors and boxes only. If you would like more details on how to work the corner to corner technique, and the basic shape of this square – visit my Basic C2C Throw Pillow pattern, and follow the instructions for the respective size.

A box is comprised of four double crochet’s.

The “space under the same chain joined to” is defined as the space between the last two double crochets of the previous rows box.

Working the final double crochet into the top of the chain from the previous row helps to keep the edge more even. After completing the first box, you may also need to lightly tug on it to keep it even as well.

Instructions for smallest size – 14″ shown with 16″, 18″, 22″, and 24″ shown in parenthesis.

I worked my original 14″ size in the colors given in the materials section and noted in the written pattern, but with the other pattern sizes, I am using the corresponding colors to those graphs. Replace the colors as needed with your own combo.

Border:

Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch), and turn. SC into the space just to the right, in between two boxes, chain 2, SC into the next corner, (chain 2, SC into the next space in between boxes) around, working a single SC into each remaining corner. When back around, work final chain 2, and then join to the 1st SC.

Measure your square. If it needs some added width/height to equal the given measurements, add an additional border round of either single crochet (which adds 0.5″ to total), or half double crochet (which adds 0.75″ to total). In this round, you’ll work one stitch per SC, two stitches per chain 2, and a (stitch, chain 1, stitch) in each corner.

If it’s good on size: Fasten off, and weave in ends.

I love tulips too! My wedding bouquet was made out of them and we have a local farm that plants fields and fields and fields of them. I love that you are always thinking up ways to give your mom longer lasting tulip gifts. Pinned.

It was my Dad who loved tulips. He planted them all down the driveway. We even brought bulbs for him from Holland. I’m going to try and make a pillow in his memory.

Yes – some don’t like to follow written patterns, but instead a color coded chart, and the numbers represent the respective row.

Wow, a handmade gift is one of the best gifts. My grandma used to always crochet things and I still have her handmade doilies.

I hope my crocheted pieces last the test of time, so I can pass them down. <3

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
