This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet a mosaic stitch afghan square in 12 sizes.
A couple months ago when trips to the yarn store were a no-go, I had the vision of this square (with a throw pillow in mind) with a solid color on top of a pretty variegated yarn. I went online to the Yarnspirations site, and color options were low, so on a whim, I picked Icelandic to coordinate with one of my favorites, Buff. I wasn’t too sure about it at first, but now I quite like it! It works for a boho style, beach style or a cute, little mermaid themed room.
These squares were designed with a throw pillow in mind so they will measure a little bit smaller than the given measurement to allow for the addition of the border, which covers up the carried yarn. If a single crochet border doesn’t get you close enough to the finished size, you can work a half double crochet border instead, but as a throw pillow though, it will stretch to fit.
Originally, I only had sizes 12″ – 27″, but I went back and added other afghan square sizes that can be used for working up all kinds of projects including sachets, scarves, shawls, and blankets to name a few.

Materials:
- 25 – 1,032 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in Buff and Icelandic
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
Suggested Yarn Alternatives:
Bernat Super Value, Caron One Pound, Hobby Lobby’s Crafters Secret
My sample is a 16″ size. The rest of the size yardages are estimated based on my sample and listed as Buff; Icelandic:
- 4″: 18 Yards; 7 Yards
- 6″: 34 Yards; 16 Yards
- 8″: 68 Yards; 37 Yards
- 10″: 89 Yards; 51 Yards
- 12″: 132 Yards; 78 Yards
- 14″: 181 Yards; 112 Yards
- 16″: 206 Yards; 141 Yards
- 18″: 284 Yards; 178 Yards
- 20″: 347 Yards; 227 Yards
- 22″: 410 Yards; 270 Yards
- 24″: 477 Yards; 318 Yards
- 27″: 616 Yards; 416 Yards
Time Spent:
The 16″ piece took me about 3 hours, 45 minutes to work up.
Measurements:
4″, (6″, 8″, 10″, 12″, 14″, 16″, 18″, 20″, 22″, 24″, 27″)
Gauge:
Have you ever measured your crocheted fabric, left it overnight, and then came back the next day and measured it again before picking back up? If you have, you noticed that the second measurement of the same exact number of stitches and rows is a little bit smaller than originally measured. I’m including both so no matter when you measure for gauge, you’ll have something to compare it to.
- Freshly Taken in Mosaic Pattern: 11 SC = 2.88″, 8 Rows = 2″
- Resting (Overnight): 11 SC = 2.63″, 8 Rows = 1.63″
- Freshly Taken in Straight SC: 16 SC = 4.13″, 8 Rows = 2.13″
- Resting (Overnight): 16 SC = 4″, 8 Rows = 1.75″
Abbreviations (US):
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Notes:
In the pattern, I will instruct to example, in Round 5 “DC into R3”. In the photo above, you can see how there is a skipped stitch in white, and two rows of chains above it. You will push those chains to the back, and work the double crochet just into that skipped stitch in white.
Instructions for 4″ size are given with the remaining in parenthesis.
Stitch multiple is 4 + 2.
If a border isn’t desired, add 4 chains to the beginning chain.
To change yarn colors, do so in the last yarn over of the previous row. If needed, see my How to Change Yarn Colors in Crochet tutorial. Drop old color to the back, and carry up on the side. When you add your border, it will cover up the carried yarn.

Thank you so much, Rhondda! I really appreciate this!! This mosaic stitch pattern has become one of my favorites, and I had a lot of fun working it up (and eventually into a throw pillow that’s now the star of my bed).
Verna says
This is really pretty. My biggest problem is color coordination but you knocked it out of the ballpark with this one. I’ve done one mosaic square so I know this is easy enough to do even though it may look intimidating.
Alexandra says
For a long time, I didn’t try it because it looked so intimidating, but it is so easy, and so fun. I love the way a variegated yarn looks peeking through the solid, but I know exactly what you mean about choosing colors! There are many projects I have on my list, but having trouble deciding on colors (like a temperature blanket).
Ginny says
I love that pattern. I’m interested what it looks like on the other side. If it was knitting there would be lots of carried threads, but maybe with crochet there aren’t?
Alexandra says
I’ve already assembled it up into a throw pillow, but I will work on a sample photo that shows how the yarn looks carried. The color stripes are worked in two rows at a time so all the carrying is done on the right hand side, and it’s just a small bit that shows from the wrong side of the work, but when the border is added, you can’t even see it anymore. It’s pretty awesome.
Caroline Fisher says
I think this will make an excellent and pretty dish cloth, hot pad, and more. Thanks!
Alexandra says
Definitely! So many possibilities.
Peggy says
Hi Alexandra
Just seen the mosaic before,do you have a tutorial on it, this is a beautiful patern and would love to do a baby blanket
I have never worked in Mosaic before
Regards
Peggy

Hello, Peggy! I don’t currently have a photo tutorial for this stitch pattern, but I do have a photo in the pattern notes section that shows what it breaks down to, and where the stitches are placed over. I’m happy to help further with any specific questions you may have.
I do want to work up a blanket in this stitch pattern. Do you prefer this pattern on a large scale (one large chain, and worked back and forth in rows), or as individual afghan squares joined together?
Carol Fletcher says
Thank you so much for this great pattern!! I used this pattern for a blanket as a Christmas gift and then “inherited” a case of yarn of solids and variegated so will be making more. Love this easy and beautiful pattern!!
Alexandra says
So glad you liked this pattern! A blanket sounds lovely! I made a super chunky version, but I’d like to maybe try several of these squares patterns, and then sew them together – is that what you did? Or did you extend the stitch count?
Selena says
Hello! Is this pattern reversible? Does it look the same on both sides ? Thanks 😊
Alexandra says
It could be reversible. My mom loves how the backside looks. You can see a photo of the back in the Pattern Notes section of my scarf pattern: https://eyeloveknots.com/2020/09/through-the-window-scarf-free-crochet-pattern-in-4-sizes.html
