These ornaments were original designed for the 2020 Festive Christmas Event, where I teamed up with a bunch of talented blogging friends to bring a plethora of creative ways to celebrate the holiday season. We shared cookie recipes, party games, handmade gift ideas, ornaments and Christmas movie fun as well as a Christmas Tree tour. Scroll all the way down to find all the other ornament ideas linked at the end.
As other patterns from my Haylee series, this ornament is worked in simple half double crochet stitches, and has 3 sizes – perfect to create a fun variety of ornaments.
Personalized ornaments are one of my favorite things to gift each holiday season. You can change up the colors to better match the recipients theme, or embellish with buttons or appliques.
I made these fun white ornaments as gifts a couple years ago and hand stitched initials onto them, but I think they look like snowballs, and would be great for a winter woodland themed tree!
We’re changing up our holiday decor this year (2023) so I went with orange for my ornaments – this is what you’ll see in the video tutorial.
You can easily leave off the hanger, and use these as decorative balls around the house, like in a basket.

Materials:
- Small Amount of Lightweight (#3) Yarn – I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn Sportweight in Red, and Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight in Airplane [Gray] and Angel
- G6/4mm Crochet Hook – my favorite ergonomic hooks are from SiennasBowtique on Etsy
- Tapestry Needle
- Soft Tape Measure
- Either Styrofoam Balls – 2.4″ for Small, 2.8″ for Medium, and 3.8″ for Large – bauble ornaments with the same diameters, or stuffing
- Optional: Stitch Marker or Waste Yarn – I like to use Locking Stitch Markers
Materials Notes:
My favorite yarn to use for Christmas ornaments is Lion Brand Vanna’s Glamour. Sadly, it’s been discontinued. You may still be able to find some on eBay or Overstock. With the metallic strands in it, it’s perfect for the holidays! I think WeCrochet Brava Sport may be a good alternative.
In my original design, and with many of the ornaments I make, I designed to cover styrofoam balls, but the small size also works great to cover ornaments from Dollar Tree that come in a tube of 7 (and measure 7½” in circumference), which is what I’m using in the video because I wanted to have the hanger at the top. Alternatively, you could also stuff the ornaments.
Keep in mind that the measurements given are ball diameters, not the circumference. If you have a ball at home, and you want to see if it’ll fit the measurements I’ve provided (or you want to work to a custom size), you’ll want to measure all the way around the ball, which is the circumference, then divide by pi, which is 3.14.
Time Spent:
The medium sized one took me just under 45 minutes to complete.
Gauge – In Pattern:
- 36 HDC in the Round = 2.25″ in diameter
- 60 HDC in the Round = 4″ in diameter
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- HDC2tog – Half Double Crochet 2 Stitches Together to Decrease
Pattern Notes:
This pattern is worked in a continuous spiral with no joining at the end of each round. You may want to use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round to help keep track as you go.

Flip piece inside out, place ball and pull piece around slightly stretching.
Small, R10: (HDC2tog) 12x. (12 HDC)
Small, R11: (HDC2tog) 12x. (6 HDC)

Large, R18: (HDC2tog) 10x. (10 HDC)
Large, R19: (HDC2tog) 5x. (5 HDC)
Fasten off with long tail.
Finishing:
Pull up on final loop so yarn comes out. Thread tail end into needle.
Begin weaving in and out of every other stitch around top. Once back to the beginning, tug on yarn to close top hole and then weave into the stitches to secure.
Keep tension on yarn end with left hand, and insert crochet hook underneath the center stitches with the other. Pull up a loop. Chain 10 for Small, and 15 for Medium and Large – if you want a loop large enough to hang straight from tree, add 10 more chains. Fold chain in half with wrong sides facing each other, slip stitch to the same stitch the chain is coming from, and weave in remaining yarn to secure the loop in place.
If you are using a bauble ornament as the base, follow the same first step, however, after weaving in and out around the top, tug on the yarn to close up around the ornament hanger, and secure here. Skip the next step to make the hanger as you already have one.

Thank you for the pattern, Alexandra! , My daughter is always looking for unbreakable ornaments for her tree that won’t be smashed on the floor from curious toddlers. She’s also the crocheter in our family so I’ll send her a link to this post. I think they’d be so cute in fluffy white yarn to look like snowballs!
Alexandra says
I do love the fact that they are unbreakable, and hold their shape well when stored (as opposed to my earlier ornaments that I stuffed). Also would make great snowballs! One of my friends makes them in a chunky chenille style yarn, and stuffs them with fiberfill for indoor snowball fights. That might be a fun one for the grandkids. Here is the link to the pattern: https://eyeloveknots.com/2020/08/indoor-snowball-fight-free-crochet-pattern-from-double-knotted-crochet.html

Happy to hear 🙂
ERLENE says
So lucky you can crochet and make all of these wonderful things.
Alexandra says
I feel like I am very lucky 🙂 And I have so much fun with it, though I am trying to be more like you, and DIY more things without the yarn.

Awesome! These will be featured in this week’s Creative Compulsions.

I wish I knew how to make these. They are such a different and fabulous ornament for a tree. Thanks so much for sharing this week. #HomeMattersParty
Alexandra says
Thank you so much, Donna! I’d be happy to make you some, or help you learn to make some 🙂
Julie says
These are a great idea, I like that they are plain. Then people can always embroidery or embellish them if they want to – great pattern, thanks.
Alexandra says
Thanks, Julie! I also really like the simplicity. Perfect for personalizing, but also great plain.
