C2C Enamored Heart Afghan Square – Free Crochet Pattern

January 23, 2021

Free crochet pattern for how to crochet a C2C Heart Afghan Square.

You may recognize this pattern from my C2C Enamored Heart Washcloth that I shared last year.

I use crochet washcloths are part of my decor rather than for washing and drying, but I know that many do use them as they were intended to be used, and as a washcloth C2C in double crochet becomes saggy because of the spaces in the boxes, and by the spaces, I mean the slit from the beginning chain that all the stitches are worked into so this year I decided to reworked my C2C Enamored Heart Washcloth pattern in half double crochet, which makes for a much nicer washcloth.

In this remake, I decided to use my original pattern in double crochet to work up some afghan squares that is great for stashbusting, and can be used for a variety of projects including throw pillows, blankets, shawls, wall hangings and so much more!

Currently, I only have an 8″ square, but I plan to update this pattern in the future as I add sizes to it – make sure to sign up for newsletter to be updated when I do.

Materials:

  • 20 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in Buff (6 Yards) and Soft White (14 Yards)
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value. I like these and Red Heart Super Saver for my home projects because it’s durable, and machine washes and dries well.

If size isn’t essential to your project you can use any yarn from your stash with respective crochet hook.

Red Heart Super Saver is an inconsistent yarn. While the overall gauge isn’t important, it is important that the gauge for both yarns that you use are the same. I had to use an H8/5mm for my Soft White, and I9/5.5mm for my Buff.

I worked this sample up in Red Heart Super Saver in Shocking Pink and Dove.

Time Spent:

About an hour and a half – really flew by though!

Measurements:

8″ Square

Gauge:

5 Boxes = 3 5/8″ by 3 11/16″

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • C2C – Corner to Corner [in DC] (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

A box is comprised of four double crochets.

This square grows from the bottom right corner to the top left corner.

This pattern is written with colors and boxes only. If you would like more details on how to work the corner to corner technique, check out my Corner to Corner in Double Crochet Photo Tutorial.

8″ Heart Graph:

As a blogger, I rely on views to my blog to earn money from my ads. Please do NOT share my graph photo this includes in Facebook groups, or save to Pinterest. Doing so, would allow makers to not have to return to my blog, which would result in a loss of views and income.

8″ Pattern with Box Colors Only:

R1 – 6: Increase in White. (6 Boxes)

R7: 1 White, 5 Red, 1 White. (7 Boxes)

R8: 1 White, 5 Red, 2 White. (8 Boxes)

R9: 2 White, 6 Red, 1 White. (9 Boxes)

R10: 1 White, 6 Red, 3 White. (10 Boxes)

R11: 3 White, 6 Red, 2 White. (11 Boxes)

R12, Begin Decrease: 1 White, 6 Red, 3 White. (10 Boxes)

R13: 2 White, 6 Red, 1 White. (9 Boxes)

R14: 3 White, 3 Red, 2 White. (8 Boxes)

R15: 1 White, 4 Red, 2 White. (7 Boxes)

R16: 2 White, 3 Red, 1 White. (6 Boxes)

R17: 1 White, 3 Red, 1 White. (5 Boxes)

R18: 1 White, 2 Red, 1 White. (4 Boxes)

R19 – 21: Decrease in White.

Border:

Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch). SC into the space between the boxes just under your current place, chain 2, (SC into the space in between the next 2 boxes, chain 2) 8x, SC into the corner stitch, chain 2, [(SC into the space in between the next 2 boxes, chain 2) 10x, SC into the corner stitch, chain 2] 3x. Join to the 1st SC.

Ends:

Use your crochet hook to pull all of your ends to the wrong side of the square – technically, any side can be the right or wrong side because turning is done at the end of each row, I look to the first boxed worked to determine my right side. Weave in ends.

Please feel free to make and sell your own C2C Enamored Heart Afghan Square using this pattern, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.

Fabulous, I’m now thinking maybe the next baby blanket I make should be C2C squares with hearts? This would be so pretty in all sorts of colour schemes.
I don’t know why I’m saying this, I don’t have time to make another baby blanket just now! Onto my to do list it goes!

Looking forward to doing the HDC C2C square. HDC is my favorite stitch and I’m sure it will shrink that annoying space problem we all have on the C2C’s. Just purchased the Alphabet C2C pattern. Can’t wait to make a pillow for my daughter. Going to make a great baby gift also:)

It definitely does shrink that space making it almost non-existent. Going to be perfect for gifts! I would love to see photos.

I really like that one too! That was the first one I made, but then I decided to try and tone it down a little bit, and try to make it more farmhouse-y.

I’m practicing my C2C on squares… to give my daughter a bunch of dishcloths while I work on my tension and color work. These are adorable.

I love that! The texture is really lovely for washcloths, especially down in half double crochet boxes.

Thank you for sharing this simple C2C “sample”. I want to learn C2C and start with something small but have a design in the pattern. I want to make sure I learn to read a pattern and can make my work turn out right!

So glad you like it! It’s a great project to start with because it has minimal color changes, and such a versatile square.

I’m going to use this pattern to make “bonding squares ” to donate to hospitals for mothers and their preemies. I think that if I use baby yarn, a smaller hook and half double crochets, the size should be just about right. They’re usually 5″ X 5″.

I really love this idea! I have it on my list to make some as well. I can’t quite answer the question of size as I’ve not tried anything similar to that to compare, but I would recommend a gauge swatch prior.

It came out at 5.5″, just what I needed!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
