As the new year was approaching, I started to begin thinking about what I wanted to share in the month of January, and for some reason, Valentine’s Day was floating about in my mind. I wrote up a list of ideas I had, one of them being this C2C Heart Washcloth.
I got so excited to get started on crocheting things in white, red, and pink that I headed down to Hobby Lobby on my way home from work the next day, and picked up everything I needed.
Usually, I go for Lily Sugar n Cream, but I knew I wanted that really pretty light gray you see, which is simply called Gray, and from the Crafters Secret Cotton line at Hobby Lobby (because Lily Sugar n Cream does not have a gray this light), and to my surprise, I found the perfect colorway for my heart, and it’s even called Valentine’s!
If you are also a Lily Sugar n Cream fan, they have a pretty ombre yarn also perfect for the heart (and Valentine’s day) called Damask Ombre – I used it in my Raspberry Surprise Front Post Wine Cozy (Free Crochet Pattern).
As a washcloth, C2C can sometimes become saggy because of the spaces in the boxes, and by spaces, I really just mean like a slit from the beginning chain that all the stitches are worked onto. I use my washcloths either for decorative purposes, or just to dry things up – not to wash anything with because of this. To make a better washcloth, go down a hook size for tighter stitches and/or use half double crochets in place of double crochets.
01.26.21 Update: Even though I mentioned just above about the saggy factor, how I use mine as decoration, and that half double crochets make for a better C2C washcloth, I have received many comments from makers complaining that their washcloths were becoming saggy from use as is, so I decided to rework this washcloth pattern in half double crochets (and will be making my future C2C washcloth patterns in half double crochet only) to make for a more functional washcloth, and in that, I have two sizes that I will add to the current two so this pattern will contain 4 patterns in total with two being worked in double crochet boxes, and two being worked in half double crochet boxes.

Materials:
- 80 – 100 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
For the C2C in HDC, you will need 83 yards for the small, and 100 yards for the medium. I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Ecru (61 yards; 78 yards) and Red (22 yards), and Crafters Secret Cotton in Bordeaux (22 yards).
For the C2C in DC, you will need 80 yards for the small, and 90 yards for the medium. I used Crafters Secret Cotton in Gray and Valentine’s. I don’t have breakdowns of the yardage.
Yarn Alternatives: WeCrochet Dishie, Lily Sugar n Cream, Bernat Handicrafter, Red Heart’s Smoothie, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran, Rico Creative Cotton Aran.
Hook: For Lily Sugar n Cream, I used an H8/5mm crochet hook, and for Crafters Secret Cotton, I used an I9/5.5mm crochet hook.
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent:
Small: One hour, 25 minutes.
Medium: One hour, 45 minutes.
Measurements:
C2C in HDC, Small: 7.75″ Square
C2C in HDC, Medium: 9.13″ (or 1/8″) Square
C2C in DC, Small: 8.5″ Square
C2C in DC, Medium: 8.5″ Wide by 11.13″ Tall
Gauge:
7 Squares = 4 1/16″
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- C2C – Corner to Corner (HDC Photo Tutorial; DC Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Notes:
A box is comprised of three half double crochets, or four double crochets.
This washcloth grows from the bottom right corner to the top left corner.
This pattern is written with colors and boxes only. If you would like more details on how to work the corner to corner technique, check out my Corner to Corner in Double Crochet Photo Tutorial or Corner to Corner in Half Double Crochet Photo Tutorial.
In the border, in half double crochet we chain 1 in between single crochets, and in double crochet we chain 2 in between single crochets – this is correct. For the half double crochet washcloths, you want to work your chain 1 loosely so the finished washcloth will lay flat. If you crochet tightly, I recommend going up one hook size for the border only.

Ends:
Use your crochet hook to pull all of your ends to the wrong side of the washcloth – technically, any side can be the right or wrong side because turning is done at the end of each row, I look to the first boxed worked to determine my right side. Weave in ends.

Thanks, Debbie!
Sheltie Times says
I’ve not mastered c2c but I do love the look of it. I like the variegated heart colors instead of the traditional red or pink.
Alexandra says
As soon as I laid eyes on that yarn, I knew it HAD to come home with me! I want to get more. It’s so pretty, and like you said, I like that it’s a non-traditional option that still says Valentine’s.
I stayed away from C2C for a while when it was first introduced, but it’s one of my favorite stitch patterns. Mikey of The Crochet Crowd has a nice YouTube video for the stitch pattern.
Verna Bradshaw says
What a quick cute project that looks so delightful for Valentines. Change the colors and can be used any time of year.
Alexandra says
Yes, definitely!
Batt LuAnn says
Can’t wait to make this one!

I love the gray background. I’ve seen lots of gray winter decor this year, and I LOVE it! #littlecottagelinkparty
Alexandra says
Yes, definitely! I am falling more and more in love with gray.
Teresa says
Cute! I love the yarn you used for the heart. Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned.
Alexandra says
Thanks, Teresa! One of those “this is perfect moments” when I saw it.
Marie says
I love displaying seasonal tea towels in the kitchen but I’m liking your idea of seasonal dishcloths too. These are super cute for Valentine’s Day! Pinned
Alexandra says
Both would be so fun together! I didn’t add a hanger to mine, but it would be really simple to add in.
Michelle says
This is adorable!
Thank you for sharing with Creative Compulsions!

Donna @ Modern on Monticello says
My mom always made crocheted dishtowels but I don’t remember her making one with a heart. I agree that the variegated yarn just makes the project. Thanks again for sharing at #HomeMattersParty
Alexandra says
Crocheted dishtowels are fun to make! But I will admit – I don’t use them! I much rather use my sponge, but I do like to use them as decoration, or give as gifts. I try my best to make things people haven’t seen before.
Decor Craft Design says
Those can make a cute Valentine’s gift! I’m will be featuring you on Happiness Is Homemade 361, congrats and have a lovely day!
Alexandra says
Definitely perfect for gifting! I really appreciate the feature 🙂
creativejewishmom/sara says
So sweet, love it! This is a great project to try out C2C, thanks for sharing on craft schooling sunday. I crocheted a bunch of doll clothes, just need to find the time to edit the photos!
Alexandra says
Oh, can’t wait to see! I bought myself a doll to make clothes for. Silly me thought I’d be able to make the clothes like I do for myself, but her big head means I have to do buttons or velcro. What do you recommend?
kristie says
Your washcloth is being featured on Little Cottage Link Party #89 today. I love it that you updated the pattern as a result of the feedback you received from your followers.
Alexandra says
I really appreciate the feature, Kristie! I love receiving feedback from makers so I can make my patterns better, or more of what they like.
Ginny says
I really want to learn how to do this type of crochet, as it seems so versatile for making pictures.
Alexandra says
It definitely is! I really enjoy it a lot more than tapestry crochet and cross stitching on crochet – so easy to make images. I have a photo tutorial linked in the abbreviation section if you’re interested 🙂
Jodie says
I love this, love doing the c2c pattern. I was thinking of doing this with different colours hearts and making into a lap blanket for my nan, do you think this would work?
Alexandra says
Definitely! That’ll be so nice! I am planning on doing the same thing, but using a different yarn.
