Amaze Me Mosaic Soap Cozy (or Small Gift Bag) – Free Crochet Pattern

June 26, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how-to crochet my Amaze Me Mosaic Soap Cozy (or Small Gift Bag).

This post contains affiliate links for LoveCrafts and WeCrochet. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.

I’ve been hit with the mosaic crochet bug! I think this zig zag, maze looking mosaic stitch pattern has quickly risen to the top of my favorite stitch list. I am feeling so inspired by it!

If mosaic crocheting intimidates you (it used to me), take a deep breath – you got this! It is just a combination of single crochets and chains with a double crochet worked over those chains. Not as scary as it seems. Check the pattern notes for a photo.

This adorable little bag can be used as a soap cozy (gift with homemade soap or facial scrubbies!), a favor/candy pouch, or a small gift bag (gift with a new pair of earrings or gift bag!).

AD-FREE, PRINTER FRIENDLY PDF:

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! Materials:

  • 70 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Splash [Turquoise] and Sunshine [Yellow]
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives to Lily Sugar n Cream: WeCrochet Dishie, Red Heart’s Smoothie

Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value

Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.

Time Spent:

This cozy took me just over 45 minutes to work up.

Measurements:

4.25″ Wide by 5.75″ Tall

Gauge:

16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4″

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

In the pattern, I will instruct to example, in Round 15 “DC into R13”. In the photo above, you can see how there is a skipped stitch in white, and two rows of chains above it. You will push those chains to the back, and work the double crochet just into that skipped stitch in white.

The stitch multiple is 6.

Join to the first stitch of the round.

To change yarn colors, after joining, turn to the new working side. Pull the new color through, then pull the original color tight (it will disappear). Work the round as written, but before joining, move the previous color to the inside so it won’t be visible from the right side of the bag.

Bag Pattern:

In Yellow, chain 15. 2 HDC into the 2nd chain, and the next 12, 3 HDC into the last chain, HDC into the next 12 along the opposite side of the foundation chain, HDC into the 1st stitch. Join. (30 HDC)

R2: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each around. Join with Blue.

R3: In Blue, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st 2 SC, chain 2, skip 1, SC into the next SC, chain 2, skip 1, (SC into the next 3 SC, chain 2, skip 1, SC into the next SC, chain 2, skip 1) 4x, SC into the next SC. Join.

R4: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, chain 2, SC into the next SC, chain 2, (SC into the next 3 SC, chain 2, SC into the next SC, chain 2) 4x, SC into the next 2 SC. Join, then slip stitch into the next chain space, and pick up Yellow.

*I recommend weaving in both of the initial ends now, as it’s easy to get to.

R5: In Yellow, chain 2 (doesn’t count as a stitch). DC into the open stitch from R3, chain 2, skip 1, SC into the next SC, chain 2, skip 1, DC into R3, SC into the SC, DC into R3, chain 2, skip 1, SC into the next SC, chain 2) 4x, DC into R3, SC into the next SC. Join.

R6: Chain 1, turn. SC into the DC and into each of the next 2 stitches, chain 2, SC into the next SC, chain 2, (SC into each of the next 3 stitches, chain 2, SC into the next SC, chain 2) 4x. Join with Blue.

R7: In Blue, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st SC, DC into R5, chain 2, skip the next SC, DC into R5, (SC into each of the next 3 SC, DC into R5, chain 1, skip the next SC, DC into R5) 4x, SC into each of the next 2 SC. Join.

R8: Chain 2, turn. SC into each of the next 3 stitches, chain 2, (SC into each of the next 5 stitches, chain 2) 4x, SC into the next SC. Join to the 2nd chain with Yellow.

R9: In Yellow, chain 1, and turn. SC into each of the 1st 2 SC, DC into R7, (SC into each of the next 2 SC, chain 2, skip 1, SC into each of the next 2 SC, DC into R7) 4x, SC into each of the next 2 SC, chain 1. Join.

R10: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, chain 2, (SC into each of the next 5 stitches, chain 2) 4x, SC into each of the next 4 stitches. Join, then slip stitch into the next chain space, and pick up Blue.

R11: In Blue, chain 1, and turn. (DC into R9, chain 2, skip 1, SC into each of the next 3 SC, chain 2, skip 1) 5x. Join to the 1st DC.

R12: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st DC, chain 2, SC into each of the next 3 SC, (chain 2, SC into the next DC, chain 2, SC into each of the next 3 SC) 4x, chain 1. Join with Yellow.

R13 – 16: Repeat Rounds 5 – 8.

R17: In Yellow, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st 2 SC, DC into R15, (SC into each of the next 5 SC, DC into R15) 4x, SC into each of the next 3 SC. Join.

R18: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each stitch around. Join with Blue.

R19: Chain 3 (counts as a DC + chain 1 space), turn. Chain 1, skip the next SC, (DC into the next SC, chain 1, skip the next SC) 14x. Join to the 2nd chain of the beginning chain 3. (15 DC)

R20 – 21: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each stitch around. Join. (30 SC)

Fasten off.

Tie Pattern:

In Yellow, chain 2. Work 4 SC into the 1st chain, slip stitch to the 1st SC. Chain 62. Work 3 SC into the 2nd to last chain. Slip stitch join, & fasten off.

Weave in ends, then weave tie in and out of Round 19.

Thanks fab! I love the idea of a pretty little snack bag in my desk drawer for those moments when I need a little something! Perfect for a gift card too, or even a gift of cash and a bar of chocolate maybe, that always makes a good gift for a teenager!

Such a good idea to keep sweet treats in a bag next to the desk. I keep mine in the fridge which makes me happy to get up to get it – ha! Plus, cold candy is pretty good.

I’ve been wanting to try mosaic crochet for ages now, but still haven’t managed to find time and actually delve into it! Your pouch is lovely!

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
