Taryn Soap Cozy (or Small Gift Bag!) – Free Crochet Pattern

July 8, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet my Taryn Soap Cozy, an easy tunisian crochet pattern perfect for pampering yourself, or gifting with a handmade bar of soap or facial scrubbies!), a favor/candy pouch, or a small gift bag (gift with a new pair of earrings or gift bag!).

This post contains affiliate links for Amazon and WeCrochet. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

I’ve been wanting to learn tunisian crochet for a while. I have always been a fan of the look of knit projects, but not as big a fan of knitting. I like that with tunisian, you can recreate these knit stitches with a crochet hook, which I’m very comfortable with.

I wanted my first project to be something small, and I’m really glad I did because it brought back knitting memories of projects taking forever to finish. In crochet terms, each row is equal to working in like single crochet, so it takes a while to build up length, but the tunisian stitches were just flying off my hook, which was a bit better as I’m not so proficient in knitting so it takes me much longer to work back and forth.

I usually work soap cozies in the round, but for that, you would need a double ended tunisian hook (hooks on both ends), which I don’t currently have so I made this cozy really easy – just a rectangle that is later slip stitched together. Easy peasy.

This adorable little bag can be used as a soap cozy (gift with homemade soap or facial scrubbies!), a favor/candy pouch, or a small gift bag (gift with a new pair of earrings or gift bag!).

Materials:

  • 46 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie in Crème Brulee [Mustard Yellow]
  • H8/5mm Tunisian Crochet Hook – I have the Clover Set of Interchangeable Bamboo Tunisian Hooks, but you can also buy just the interchangeable hook and the 16″ interchangeable cord.
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart’s Smoothie

Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value

Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.

Time Spent:

This cozy took me just over 1.5 hours to work up.

Measurements:

4.25″ Wide (Once Seamed) by 5.5″ Tall

Gauge:

17 TSS by 17 Rows (forward pass + return pass = 1 row) = 4.13″

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • TSS – Tunisian Simple Stitch (the forward pass)
    • How to Tunisian Simple Stitch: (insert hook behind the front vertical bar, yarn over and pull through leaving the previous loop on the hook) as needed
  • ETSS – Extended Tunisian Simple Stitch
    • How to ETSS: (insert hook behind the front vertical bar, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through 1 loop leaving all previous loops on the hook) working all the way across the row
  • Return Pass
    • How to Return Pass: (yarn over, pull through 2 loops) as needed

Bag Pattern:

Chain 37. TSS across, then return pass. (37 TSS)

  • How to TSS: (insert hook behind the front vertical bar, yarn over and pull through leaving the previous loop on the hook) working all the way across the row
  • How to Return Pass: yarn over, pull the yarn through 1 loop (this is to chain 1 for the start of the row), then (yarn over, pull through 2 loops) working all the way across until you have just one loop on the hook.

R2 – 19: TSS across, then return pass. (37 TSS)

R20 – Eyelet Row: Chain 1 (to make the initial chain taller; counts as the first ETSS). (chain 1, skip the next stitch, ETSS into the next stitch) across, then return pass as usual. (19 ETSS)

R21: TSS into each stitch and skipped space across, then return pass. (37 TSS)

R22: TSS across, then return pass. (37 TSS)

Fold the cozy in half with the right sides facing each other…

… chain 1, and then flip the cozy so you can work down the side of it. Slip stitch evenly (that’s one stitch per row/stitch) through both layers working down the side, and then across the opposite side of the foundation chain. Fasten off.

Tie Pattern:

Chain 3. Slip stitch to the 1st chain. Chain 63. Slip stitch to the 3rd chain from the hook. Fasten off.

Finishing:

Weave in ends, then turn cozy right side out and weave tie in and out of Round 20.

just checking: there’s no bind-off row for the Tunisian stitching? We end the body with the RP of row 22?

Correct 🙂 The return pass will leave us with just one loop on our hook, and in the perfect position to slip stitch the layers together.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
