Nothing beats the feeling of handmade washcloths. They are great for washing dishes with, and also feel fantastic against the skin in the shower.
My Landon series is an easy crochet line that features the moss stitch aka the linen stitch, which is comprised of simple single crochet stitches and chains. It creates such a beautiful, woven texture, and looks really neat when worked in stripes.
If you’re looking for a gift, work up a set of three, and wrap with a bow, or place in a spa themed gift basket, or kitchen themed gift basket with a Landon Hand Towel.
My Landon Coasters would also make a great matching piece, and it can fit into each of the above gift ideas too! In a kitchen themed gift, they can be used as coasters for beverages and candles, or as mini washcloths, or in a spa themed gift, they can be used as coasters for candles and small vases, or as large facial scrubbies.
HUGE thank you to Abby of A Stitch Shy of Normal – I designed these washcloths, but she worked up the actual samples for me, and she did a lovely job! Guys, team work makes the dream work.

What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Washcloth?
- 50 (60, 80, 95) Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn in the Azure, Creme Brulee and Silver colorways
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook for Body
- G6/4.25mm Crochet Hook for Border
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart Smoothie
If you wanted to use this an afghan square instead, some great yarns I recommend are {wools} WeCrochet Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease, {non-wools} WeCrochet Brava, and Red Heart Super Saver with an I9/5.5mm crochet hook for the body.
Dishie Yarn is a touch thinner than Lily Sugar n Cream – you may need to go down a hook size with this yarn if it’s your choice, though gauge is not essential in this project if the finished size isn’t.
I usually recommend jewelry pliers to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Dishie Yarn is really smooth, and easy to weave the yarn in and out of.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Washcloth?
Just over 45 minutes for the Small size, about an hour for the Medium size, and just over an hour for the Large size.
Measurements:
- Small: 6.25″ Square
- Medium: 7” Wide by 7.25″ Tall
- Large: 8.25” Square
- Large Long: 8.25″ Wide by 10” Tall
Gauge, Not Essential:
With H8/5mm hook: (chain 1 space + single crochet) * 10 = 4″ wide; 18 Rows = 4.13″ (or 4 1/8″) tall
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- Rev SC – Reverse Single Crochet
Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
Each single crochet and each chain are considered a stitch. In the moss stitch pattern, you are working a two row repeat that staggers the stitches with single crochets worked over the previous rows chain 1 spaces, and vice versa.
The chain multiple is any even number. After you work row 1, you’ll end up with an odd number of stitches. To vary the height, just make sure to end on an even number of rows so the border will still work out evenly.

A handmade gift from a friend or family member is always special. The recipient knows that you were thinking of them while you were making the gift. These washcloths seem like they would be great stocking stuffers or holiday gifts. Thank you for sharing this post in the Talent-Sharing Tuesdays Link-Up 43.

I think they’d make a great gift too! I love the idea of a spa or kitchen themed gift basket with a little touch of handmade in there.
