My Landon series is an easy crochet line that features the moss stitch aka the linen stitch, which is comprised of simple single crochet stitches and chains. It creates such a beautiful, woven texture.
My Landon Washcloths would make a great matching piece if you wanted to gift (or use for yourself) in a kitchen themed gift (the coasters can be used as such for beverages and candles, or as mini washcloths), or in a spa themed gift (the coasters can be used as such for candles and small vases, or as large facial scrubbies).
My Landon Hand Towel also is a great matching piece, and it can fit into each of the above gift ideas too!

What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Coaster?
- 25 Yards (each) of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn in the Silver colorway
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook for Body
- G6/4.25mm Crochet Hook for Border
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart Smoothie, Crafters Secret Cotton
Dishie Yarn is a touch thinner than Lily Sugar n Cream – you may need to go down a hook size with this yarn if it’s your choice, though gauge is not essential in this project if the finished size isn’t.
If you are only making a coaster that will house a cold or hot beverage, you can use acrylic as an alternative with an I9/5.5mm hook – just do not put anything fresh from the oven on the acrylic coaster, or you will melt the fibers and risk burning yourself.
If you wanted to use a wool or synthetic, some great yarns I recommend are {wools} WeCrochet Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease, {non-wools} WeCrochet Brava, and Red Heart Super Saver with an I9/5.5mm crochet hook for the body.
I usually recommend jewelry pliers to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Dishie Yarn is really smooth, and easy to weave the yarn in and out of.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Coaster?
Each coaster took me about 25 minutes to work up.
Measurements:
4.13” (or 4 ⅛”) Square
Gauge, Not Essential; With H8/5mm Crochet Hook:
- In a Swatch: (chain 1 space + single crochet) * 10 = 4″ wide; 18 Rows = 4.13″ (or 4 1/8″) tall
- In Pattern, Before Adding Border: 4.63″ (or 4 5/8″) Square
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- Rev SC – Reverse Single Crochet
Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
Each single crochet and each chain are considered a stitch. In the moss stitch pattern, you are working a two row repeat that staggers the stitches with single crochets worked over the previous rows chain 1 spaces, and vice versa.
The chain multiple is any even number. After you work row 1, you’ll end up with an odd number of stitches. To vary the height, just make sure to end on an even number of rows so the border will still work out evenly.
Landon Coasters, Video Tutorial:
Landon Coasters, Written Pattern:

Border, R1: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and into each stitch and chain space across to the last stitch, (SC, chain 1, SC) into the last stitch, evenly SC (that’s one SC per row) down 13 stitches, (SC, chain 1, SC) into the last stitch, SC 15 across the opposite side of the foundation chain, (SC, chain 1, SC) into the last stitch, evenly SC up 13 stitches, SC into the same stitch as the first, chain 1, then slip stitch join to the first SC. [4 chain 1 spaces + 64 SC]
