A few weeks ago, I saw a teaser on Instagram about a new pattern that was releasing soon, and I immediately set myself a reminder to get it! The Fidgety Flower Pattern, aka Florina the Flower Fidget was not only super cute, but also a practical addition my fidget toy collection at my markets! I love how cute this pattern works up, as well as how easy it is to make!

The Florina the Flower Fidget by Hooks and Whisks is a no-sew pattern that makes a daisy-like flower with petals that “pop” in and out like the popular fidget toys that are sold in stores. This pattern works up really quickly and uses limited supplies, which makes it perfect for market-prepping or last-minute gifts. These flowers would also be great for gifts for teachers with Teacher Appreciation Week right around the corner! I highly recommend you try out this adorable pattern!

What Do I Need to Make Florina the Flower Fidget?

  • Bernat Blanket Yarn – I used Bernat Blanket Brights in School Bus Yellow (Bright Yellow Petals), Bernat Baby Blanket in Buttercup (Light Yellow Center), Bernat Baby Blanket Sparkle in Seaside (Turquoise Petals), and Bernat Baby Blanket in Baby Pink (Light Pink Center)
  • K10.5/6.5mm Crochet Hook – I used my Clover Amour Ergonomic Crochet Hook!
  • Polyester Fiberfil
  • Yarn Needle
  • Florina the Flower Fidget Pattern, paid crochet pattern by HooksAndWhisks via Etsy

Material Notes:

This pattern calls for weight 6 yarn and specifically mentions Bernat Blanket Yarn. This is one of my go-to yarns for making plush stuffed toys, so I had a lot of it on hand. If you are looking for a similar type of yarn, you could use Lion Brand Cover Story, Big Twist Plush, or Parfait Chunky. I will definitely be making some up using the Lion Brand Cover Story that I have in lots of fun variegated colors! In case you didn’t know, you can shop Lion Brand Cover Story from the Yarn Crafts and Coffee online yarn store!

One of the benefits of this pattern is that it requires very few materials. Other than yarn, you just need a small amount of polyester fiberfil to stuff the center. There is an option included in the pattern to add eyes to the flowers to give it a face. If you decide to add eyes, the pattern suggests using 16-18 mm safety eyes.

Aside from the materials that make the Florina the Fidget Flower, you will also need your crochet hook and a yarn needle. The pattern also suggests using stitch markers to make sure you are adding your petals to the correct round. I decided to be a rebel and forego the stitch markers, but they would have actually been really helpful! For my crochet hook, I used my favorite Clover Amour hook in the K10.5/6.5mm size. You may need to adjust your hook size depending on your tension. I would also recommend using a steel yarn needle to help prevent it from bending when you sew in your ends with the thicker yarn used in this pattern.

How Long Does it Take to Make Florina the Flower Fidget?

These flower fidgets were relatively quick makes. Each flower took me about 45 minutes to complete.

How Big is Florina the Flower Fidget?

Each of my finished flower fidgets measured just under 7 inches across from petal to petal. The center of the flower is about 2 1/2 inches in diameter, which makes the finished flower about 2 1/2 inches thick.

Gauge:

I used a K10.5/6.5mm hook with blanket yarn. A magic circle with 6 single crochets measured approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

Gauge is not critical in this type of project. You mainly just want to make sure that there are not gaps between stitches so that the stuffing does not come through. If you notice gaps, you will want to go down a hook size.

All About Florina the Flower Fidget:

The Florina the Flower Fidget pattern is a no-sew crochet pattern that works up nice and quickly. The pattern provides detailed photos to show you how to complete some of the trickier parts of the pattern, which makes it relatively simple. I would call this an intermediate to advanced beginner project. In order to make the Florina the Fidget Flower, you will need to know how to work in the round using single crochets, increases, and decreases. You will also need to know how how to work in just the front loop and how to slip stitch pieces together.

The pattern starts out with making the center. This is an easy and quick construction. The design of the center allows you to easily see where the petals of the flower are going to be placed, especially if you follow the designer’s suggestion and use stitch markers! You will have to stuff the center with a small amount of fiberfil stuffing. The pattern provides information on when is best to add stuffing as you close up the back.

The petals of the flower are made individually and then attached right on to the center of the flower using slip stitches. This construction makes the flower no-sew. The only work you will really have to do with your yarn needle is weaving in the ends of the flower petals and sewing together the back of the flower’s center.

This pattern is really well-written and provides a lot of detailed information and pictures to help you work up the pattern. In addition, the designer also includes a bunch of tester pictures to give you inspiration in regards to colors and textures. I would definitely say this pattern is worth every penny! I can’t wait to make up a bunch of these Florina the Flower Fidgets for my upcoming markets!
