Even though the temperatures are still sweltering where I live, it’s never too early to start preparing for fall in the crochet world. Hence why I have selected a pattern involving pumpkins for my review!
I absolutely LOVE autumn (pretty sure we covered what a basic fall girly I am last year…) so any chance to make some cute fall decor is one I will take! Pumpkins are, of course, the unofficial mascot for fall so I had to kick off the crochet season with them. I have already done traditional, stand alone pumpkins and I love to decorate my fireplace area with fall decor. When I saw this pumpkin garland, I knew this was the piece that my mantle was missing.
I went through and made the garland but you could make just the cute little pumpkins and use them as decor, fill a basket or bowl with them, line your window sills…the list goes on.
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET A PUMPKIN GARLAND?
- Small Amounts of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in White and Dusty Grey, Red Heart With Love in Tigerlily, and I Love This Wool in Ivory
- H8/5mm crochet hook
- G6/4mm crochet hook
- D3/3.25mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Poly-fil stuffing
- Rustic Pumpkin Garland, Paid Crochet Pattern from TheKnottedNestShop via Etsy
MATERIAL NOTES:
The pattern uses worsted weight cotton yarn, but I just picked some yarns that I had in my stash. The Red Heart Yarns are acrylic, and the cream color I only had in wool. The wool pumpkins did come out slightly smaller than the acrylic ones, but only slightly. You could always change your hook size if it was a bigger difference, or have a variety of sizes in your garland! With that said, you could easily use any weight yarn in your stash to get different size pumpkins.
Speaking of hook sizes, there are 3 different ones used in this pattern. The pattern calls for this change of hooks; it was not due to me needing to change hook sizes for achieving gauge. The H hook is used for the the pumpkin sides. The G hook is used for making the garland chain. The D hook is used for making the stems and vines. Please keep this in mind should you make hook size adjustments in your work.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET A PUMPKIN GARLAND?
I happened to time each step of the process. It took 1.5 hours to crochet all the sides of the pumpkins, 7 minutes to crochet the stems, 12 minutes to crochet the vines, 7 minutes to weave in all the ends, 6 minutes to crochet the garland chain, 1 hour and 15 minutes to sew all pieces together and stuff and 18 minutes to attach all the pumpkins to the chain. In total it took approximately 30 minutes per pumpkin from start to finish (not including the time to attach to the chain).
Measurements:
Each pumpkin measures about 3.75 inches by 3 inches. My wool ones are slightly smaller than the others but not much.

Gauge:
The gauge for this pattern is not crucial but the diameter of the circle after round 3 was 2.5 inches, which matched the pattern’s given gauge. (You have no idea how stoked I was to match gauge with the pattern because that almost never happens for me)!
PATTERN NOTES:
This pattern doesn’t give instructions on how to attach your pumpkins to the garland. There are a variety of ways that you could do this. What I did was I took a short length of yarn, wove it through a few stitches on the back side of the pumpkin and then tied it to the chain of the garland in even intervals. Then I wove the ends of the knot into the pumpkin.
Overall, this pattern is excellent! It is well-written, includes photos for reference and works up exactly as designed.

I have also made this designer’s Easter bunny garland pattern and this one was just as wonderful! You can find my Easter Bunny Garland review here (or grab the crochet pattern from Etsy).
I am so happy with my cute pumpkin garland and even though summer is only about half over, I am tempted to just leave the garland up anyway…What do you think?
