With the Superbowl coming up this weekend, I just had to grab the Football Pillow pattern from Snappy Tots when I saw it on a Facebook group I’m in. This was such a fun and quick pattern to make, and my son absolutely loves it! It’s the perfect size for playing or using as a pillow on the couch. Plus, the pattern can be adapted easily to be made into different sizes.
If you or someone you know is a football fan, I definitely recommend you try out this cute Football Pillow pattern by Snappy Tots. It works up really quickly and easily, and the pattern is pretty beginner-friendly. The details match a real football so well. You can make a bunch in all different sizes to decorate for your Superbowl party, to give as gifts, or sell at markets.
What Materials Do I Need to Crochet a Football Pillow?
- Bernat Blanket Yarn in Taupe and Vintage White
- K10.5/6.5mm Crochet Hook – I used my Clover Amour Ergonomic Crochet Hook
- Stuffing
- Yarn Needle
- Football Pillow, paid pattern by Snappy Tots via Etsy
Material Notes:
This pattern calls for Bernat Blanket yarn, just like I used. The designer chose to use the colorways Mink and Woodsy for the brown part of the football. In addition to Bernat Blanket yarn, you could also use a different super bulky weight 6 yarn to make your pillow. The pillow I made is smaller of the two sizes discussed in the pattern. You can also hold two strands together to make the larger size. The smaller pattern requires 200 yards of the brown color and 70 yards of the white color. If you choose to make the larger size, you would need 400 of brown and 120 yards of white instead.
The pattern calls for a N15/9mm crochet hook. I used the K10.5/6.5 hook instead because that’s my preferred size for working with Bernat Blanket yarn. You can adjust the hook size to make sure your pillow doesn’t have gaps that will allow stuffing to come out between the stitches.
When stuffing the football, you want to make sure you stuff it full enough to help the football maintain its shape, but not too much that it distorts the shape. If you are making the smaller size pillow, the pattern recommends using 12-16 ounces of stuffing. For the larger pillow, you will need 24-30 ounces of stuffing.
In addition to the yarn and stuffing, you will also need a yarn needle. I recommend using a steel yarn needle so it doesn’t bend when you are sewing on the lacing of the football.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet a Football Pillow?
This pattern took me about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish.
How Big is a Finished Crocheted Football Pillow?
The finished football measures just over 12 inches long from point to point and about 7 inches in diameter at the middle.
Gauge:
I used a K10.5/6.5mm hook with blanket yarn. A magic circle with 7 half double crochets measured approximately 1 1/2 inches in diameter.
Gauge is not critical in this type of project. You mainly just want to make sure that there are not gaps between stitches so that the stuffing does not come through. If you notice gaps, you will want to go down a hook size.

All About Crocheting a Football Pillow:
This pattern is fairly beginner friendly and works up pretty quickly due to the super bulky yarn. To be able to make the football, you will need to be able to crochet in joined rounds, half double crochet, increase, decrease, single crochet, and slip stitch. You will also need to know how to do simple color changes from one round to another.
I really liked the use of half double crochets in this project to help it work up faster and make a really nice texture on the football. The finished pillow looks like it has a texture similar to a real football.
There is some sewing involved in the pattern. The laces are all made individually and then sewn on. The pattern to make the laces is really easy – you basically just make rectangles. The sewing of the laces can be a little tricky since the pillow is already stuffed at this point. As I said earlier, you will want to make sure you have a sturdy yarn needle to help with this process.
I really enjoyed this pattern, and I definitely plan on making more of these cute footballs in different sizes. I think the smaller size is a perfect stuffed toy, but I’m also looking forward to making a larger pillow size and some smaller footballs with bulky weight 5 chenille yarn.
I hope you try out this pattern, and let us know what you think!
