Even though I’ve been teaching for 12 years, it’s still hard to pass up a cute teacher-themed item when I see one! When I saw the adorable No-Sew Pencil pattern by Emily of Knots Merry Yarn, I knew I had to get it and make it! As a bonus, Emily is another teacher, so it was awesome to support a fellow teacher when purchasing this pattern from her!
Teacher Appreciation Week is celebrated every year in May. This year, it is Monday, May 4, to Friday, May 8, 2026. If you have a child in school or know a teacher, these No-Sew Pencils would make great gifts to show your appreciation! Seriously – what’s better than a handmade gift that they can treasure and use to brighten up their desk decor?

If you sell at markets, these pencils would be great sellers leading up to Teacher Appreciation Week! They work up really quickly and are so incredibly cute!

What Do I Need to Crochet a No-Sew Pencil?

  • Super Bulky (Weight 6) Plush Yarn – I used a variety of yarns including Big Twist Plush and Bernat Blanket Yarn
  • K10.5/6.5 mm Crochet Hook – I love using my Clover Amour ergonomic hook!
  • Stuffing
  • Small Amount of Black Yarn or Embroidery Floss for Mouth
  • Yarn Needle – I recommend using a steel yarn needle.
  • 10 mm Black Felt Eyes
  • No-Sew Pencil, paid crochet pattern by KnotsMerryYarn via Etsy

Material Notes:

This pattern calls for super bulky (weight 6 yarn). The designer used Sweet Snuggles Lite, but I chose to use a variety of yarns including Bernat Blanket yarn and Big Twist Plush yarn. Other yarns that would work up in a similar size and texture include Baby Bee Snugs and Kisses and Premier Basix Chenille Brights.

I made the small size of the pencil by using weight 6 yarn with a 6.5 mm hook. If you would like to make a large pencil, you can use a 9 mm hook with weight 7 yarn instead.

In addition to the yarn and hook, you will also need stuffing and a tapestry needle to sew the final ends of the pencil. There is also an option to add a bow, which requires a tiny bit of sewing.

If you would like to give your pencil a face like I did, you can use 12-16 mm safety eyes. I went with 10 mm black felt eyes instead. You could also embroider eyes. For the mouth, you will need a small amount of thinner black yarn, such as worsted weight or crochet thread.

How Long Does It Take to Crochet a No-Sew Pencil?

The No-Sew Pencil is a really quick make! I made mine in about 30 minutes, even with the color changes!

What Size is a Finished No-Sew Pencil?

The size will definitely depend on what yarn you use. Using super bulky yarn, my finished pencil was 6.5 inches long and 2.75 inches wide.

Gauge (Not Essential):

Gauge is not provided in this pattern and is not critical for making stuffed toys like this. You mainly want to make sure that your hook size is appropriate for your yarn and that your stitches are tight enough together so that your stuffing doesn’t come out through holes between the stitches.

If you want your No-Sew Pencil to come out to be the same size as mine, using super bulky weight 6 yarn (Bernat Blanket) and a K10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, a magic circle with 8 single crochets should measure approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.

All About Crocheting the No-Sew Pencil:

The No-Sew Pencil is a really easy and quick make that would be a perfect gift for a teacher, writer, or student! While there are some color changes involved, they all happen at the start of rounds, making them really easy. There are no overly complicated stitches in this pattern, so it is really beginner-friendly.

This pattern is worked completely in the round with no sewing involved, unless you want to add the optional bow. You will want to secure your ends while working through the pattern, because once it is stuffed and you complete your final decrease, all the ends are totally hidden. While a tapestry needle is really helpful for sewing up the ends, you could use a crochet hook to pull the end tail through the stitches to secure the ends if you don’t have a tapestry needle on hand.

While the facial features on the pencil are optional, I think they really help make this design extra cute! I will definitely be making many more of these with both the optional bow and without! My daughter is also begging me to make one for each of her teachers! I hope you try this pattern out, and I would love to know what you think!
