Apple Soap Cozy (or Small Gift Bag) – Free Crochet Pattern

August 7, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet my Apple Soap Cozy (or Small Gift Bag), an easy crochet pattern perfect for pampering yourself, or gifting with a handmade bar of soap or facial scrubbies, a favor/candy pouch, or a small gift bag with a new pair of earrings.

Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.

August 1st always puts me in the Fall spirit, and for some reason, first thing that I am always thinking of in August is apples. Check out my C2C Apple Washcloths, Cross Stitched Apple Earrings and 20 Free Apple Crochet Patterns.

This adorable little bag can be used in a variety of ways:

My favorite way is as a soap cozy. Stick a bar of soap in the pouch, and use it in place of a loofah. The cotton yarn is great for exfoliating, and the soap cozy will extend the life of your bar of soap. Check out Mom’s Apple Pie Cold Process Soap from HelloHoneySoaps for $6.

It also makes a great gift bag for things like a homemade bar of soap, facial scrubbies or even a pair of earrings with small box and all – I like these Faux Leather Apple Earrings from SpeckledSparrowTX for $9+.

Lastly, these are great favor/candy pouches. Great for back to school gifting to students or teacher, or fill with candy and hand out at a party. Check out these Printable Back to School Tags from LemonadeDesignStudio for $5.

Materials:

  • 58 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie in Fiesta Red (31 Yards), Coffee (19 Yards) and Jalapeno (8 Yards)
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart’s Smoothie

Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value

Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.

Time Spent:

This cozy took me just over an hour.

Measurements:

4.38″ (4 3/8″) by 5.63″ (5 3/8″) Tall

Gauge:

In Pattern, 4.31″ (4 5/16″) After Round 4

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, but beginning chain 3 in Round 13 does (double crochet plus chain 1).

Join to the 1st stitch of each round, except in Round 13 when you will join to the 2nd chain.

To keep my seam straight, I worked it in a way not stated in the pattern. I alternated between working one round of half double crochets beginning in the first stitch, and the next round beginning in the second stitch. Just make sure to work 32 stitches total, and the seam will barely be noticeable.

Bag Pattern:

In Red, chain 16. 2 HDC into the 2nd chain, and the next 13, 3 HDC into the last chain, HDC into the next 13 along the opposite side of the foundation chain, HDC into the 1st stitch. Join. (32 HDC)

R2 – 12: Chain 1. HDC into each stitch around. Join. (32 HDC)

*I recommend weaving in the beginning tails after Round 3. Switch to Brown at the end of Round 12.

R13: In Brown, chain 3, turn. Skip the next stitch, (DC into the next stitch, skip the next stitch) 15x. Join. (16 DC)

R14 – 15: Chain 1. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. Join. (32 SC)

Fasten Off, and Weave in End/s.

Tie Pattern:

Chain 2. Work 5 SC into the 1st chain, slip stitch to the 1st SC. Chain 64. Work 4 SC into the 2nd to last chain. Slip stitch join, & fasten off.

Weave in ends, and set aside.

Leaf Pattern – Make 2:

I used my Basic Leaf Pattern 2 Ways Free Crochet Pattern. Make two of them, and fasten off with long tail for sewing. Weave in initial tail end on both.

Assembly:

Weave the tie in and out of Round 13, then sew the leaves onto the little round ends of the tie lining up the top center of the leaf with the top center of the round end of the tie.

How to Sew on Leaf Photo Tutorial:

Take long tail, and weave in on the wrong side…

… almost up to the top of the leaf.

Line up the top center of the leaf on top of the top center of the round circle at the end of the tie.

Insert the needle into the round circle end into the stitch closest to you, but not through the leaf…

Insert needle under several stitches of the wrong side of the leaf working across.

Insert needle back into the round circle end upwards into the stitch closest to you.

Insert needle into the next stitch on the round circle end, and also into the corresponding stitch of the leaf.

Insert needle into the next stitch to the right working into the leaf and then the round circle end.

Weave the tail end into the round circle end. I found it to be tight, and hurt my fingers, so I used jewelry pliers to carefully help me pull the tapestry needle through.

Oh no! Sorry for that, but thanks for catching it. The color change happens at the end of Round 12.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
