Crochet mini bags are one of my favorite things to make. They are quick to work up and so versatile!
Originally, this mini crochet bag was designed as a soap cozy, where you place a bar of soap in it and use it in the shower to exfoliate with and make your bar of soap go further, but these mini crochet bags are also perfect as candy pouches for parties, as small gift bags and even as a coin purse, so in rediscovering this design as part of my Apple a Day Crafting Event 2026, I decided to rename this bag as a Mini Gift Bag.
Imagine this little bag as a soap cozy gifted with a homemade soap or textured facial scrubbies, as a candy or favor pouch at an Apple Picking Party or Fall Festival, or as a gift bag for a gift card to a favorite coffee shop for Teacher Appreciation Week or some Fall themed earrings, like these Cross Stitched Apple Earrings also found here at EyeLoveKnots.
I always remember on Meet the Teacher Day, some teachers gave out really cute curated brown paper bags with trinkets inside. If you had a small class, you may consider placing those trinkets inside a crocheted apple gift bag and a bonus would be finding ways to incorporate that bag into the school year.
Soap Cozy Note:
The feedback I’ve received for this bag as a soap cozy is that with it’s solid fabric and thicker yarn, it does take a while to dry so keep this in mind if you intend to use it this way. Perhaps, consider using a lighter weight yarn, or a cotton blend with a fast drying fiber, like bamboo.
Free Apple Crochet Patterns:

If you’ll use your mini bag as a soap cozy, some C2C Apple Washcloths would be an excellent addition to your bathroom to match.

If you’ll be using your mini bag as a gift bag, consider making some Cross Stitched Apple Earrings to add inside as the gift.

If you’ll be stuffing your mini bag and then adding it to your tiered tray or entryway table decor, consider making an Apple Wreath to hang above the entryway table or on your front door.

You may also like to add a stuffed apple to a play kitchen or a bucket full of them for your home decor.

You’ll find so many other great apple crochet projects that would pair well with the Apple Mini Bag in this collection of 20 Free Apple Crochet Patterns.

Yarn Talk:
I used WeCrochet Dishie in Fiesta Red for the Apple, Coffee for the Stem and Jalapeno for the Leaves.
When it comes to a 100% cotton yarn, I love using WeCrochet Dishie, Cascade Nifty Cotton, Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 and Queensland Coastal Cotton as they’re all colorfast, which means the color is set so you don’t have to worry about it fading or bleeding when used and/or washed.

WeCrochet Dishie (aka Knit Picks Dishie) is a versatile, soft worsted weight #4 yarn made of 100% cotton. It’s on the lighter side for worsted weight working up similarly to Cascade Nifty Cotton, Queensland Coastal Cotton and I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 83 colors.
Now, there are a lot of great options for these mini bags, mostly dependent on how you will use the bag. I’ll share some yarns with you that I think would be great options for the mini bag and following the apple theme, but really, the sky is the limit here.
If you are going to use this bag as a soap cozy, you’ll want to use either a 100% cotton or a blend of cotton with linen, cotton with bamboo or linen with bamboo. Linen gets strong when wet, and gets softer and nicer with each wash. On it’s own, it’s on the rougher side for feel, but linen blends often combine with cotton or bamboo to add softness. Bamboo yarns have a high absorbency – even more than cotton – however, bamboo is weaker when wet, and more prone to developing mold so if bamboo is a fiber you want to use, I definitely recommend going with a blend of linen and/or cotton. Stay away from synthetic fibers, like acrylic, as they lack the absorbency needed.
Cascade Nifty Cotton Yarn is a versatile, soft worsted weight #4 yarn made of 100% cotton. It’s on the lighter side for worsted weight working up similarly to WeCrochet Dishie, Queensland Coastal Cotton and and I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 66 colors.
Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 Yarn is a versatile cotton yarn made of 100% cotton, that is also colorfast. It’s softer than the tough cotton yarns you may imagine for projects like washcloths and bags, but not as soft as pima cotton. The 4/6 size is a heavy worsted weight #4 yarn a teeny bit thicker than Lily Sugar n Cream if you’re familiar. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, 2026, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 58 colors – as well as in Lightweight #3.
Queensland Coastal Cotton is a versatile, soft worsted weight #4 yarn made of 100% cotton. It’s on the lighter side for worsted weight working up similarly to Cascade Nifty Cotton, WeCrochet / Knit Picks Dishie and I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for and it’s colorfast. As of June 1st, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 64 solid colors and 39 variegated colors – as well as in Sport Weight #2.
Note: The feedback I’ve received for this bag as a soap cozy is that with it’s solid fabric and thicker yarn, it does take a while to dry so keep this in mind if you intend to use it this way. Perhaps, consider using a lighter weight yarn with more chains using the stitch multiple, or a cotton blend with a fast drying fiber, like bamboo.
As a gift bag, candy pouch or favor bag, you can reach for any fiber yarn desired. This pattern was written for a 100% cotton yarn, which produces a more relaxed fabric. If you choose a different fiber, such as 100% acrylic, you may want to go up a hook to achieve the same measurements.
Premier Yarns Basix is a sturdy worsted weight acrylic yarn that is perfect for practically any yarn project you could dream of! It’s similar to Red Heart Super Saver and Bernat Super Value, but a little softer. It’s also machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of July 4th, 2026, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 93 solid colors – as well as in Lightweight, Chunky Weight and Super Bulky Weight.
Lion Brand Pound of Love Yarn is a soft, acrylic yarn that comes in a one pound ball. One pound means you won’t need many skeins to get projects done and even after big projects, like baby blankets, you’ll usually have some yarn leftover for smaller projects. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 5th, it is available in a 35 colors.
Berroco Remix Yarn is a fantastic wool-free, eco-friendly yarn that consists of 30% superfine nylon, 27% cotton, 24% acrylic, 10% silk and 9% linen all of recycled fibers from garments and other textiles. It has such a lovely texture and lightness to it! It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for and will soften with washing too. As of June 5th, it’s available in over 20 colors.
Tools & Notions:
We have lots of great crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop. The most popular, and preferred by Candace and Emily, are the Clover Amour Crochet Hooks with the soft handles and smooth metal hook. Alexandra prefers metal crochet hooks with large, ergonomic clay handles and just loves the fun designs from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! If your preference is wood, the LYKKE brand are lovely, smooth and sturdy.
Tapestry Needles with the blunt, round end are essential for sewing and finishing on a number of yarn crafts, including crocheting, knitting as well as needlepointing on fabric and plastic canvas. The blunt, rounded end allows the needle to pass easily through the fabric created by yarn and holes on canvas without snagging (or getting your fingers) in the process. More specifically for crocheting and knitting, a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle makes weaving, grafting and sewing so much easier on the hands. The long oval eye makes threading strands of yarn easier, though you may still want to use a needle threader.
Scissors are an essential tool. When I’m working on the go, I like to carry a pair of folding scissors as they fit perfectly in even the tiniest of bags. When I am working at home or have more space in my bag for a larger notions pouch, I like to use a pair of lightweight, all-purpose scissors as they are so versatile and great for a variety of things from cutting plastic canvas mesh to trimming yarn ends after weaving in to cutting out a care card to include with a handmade gift.
Jewelry Pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in the ends of tough yarns, such as cotton yarns and chunkier yarns, that can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to help pull the tapestry needle through the work. Make sure the eye of the needle is facing up so you can see directly down it and carefully pull, wiggling as needed. If it gets caught and you tug too hard, it will break the eye of your needle.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Soap Cozy?
This cozy took me just over an hour.

Measurements:
4 3/8″ by 5 3/8″ Tall
Gauge (Not Essential):
In Pattern, 4 1/4″ After Round 4
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial | Video Tutorial)
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
For the Leaves, in addition to the 3 Abbreviations above, the following apply:
- TR – Treble Crochet aka Triple Crochet [yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through (4 loops on hook), (yarn over, pull through two loops) 3x]
- DTR – Double Treble Crochet aka Quadruple Crochet [yarn over three times, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through (5 loops on hook), (yarn over, pull through two loops) 4x]
Pattern Notes:
Within the pattern, Color A is represented by Red (Green or Yellow too) and is the main color of the bag aka the Apple, Color B is represented by Brown and is the color of the Stem and Tie, and Color C is represented by Green and is the color of the Leaves. I was labeling the colors within the pattern with the ones I used for my project, but I found that in in person classes, students were having a tough time with it when using different colors so I hope the more generic terms are more helpful.
The beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, but the beginning chain 3 in Round 13 does (double crochet plus chain 1).
Slip stitch join to the 1st stitch of each round, except in Round 13 when you will join to the 2nd chain.
To keep my seam straight, I worked it in a way not stated in the pattern. I alternated between working one round of half double crochets beginning in the first stitch, and the next round beginning in the second stitch. Just make sure to work 32 stitches total, and the seam will barely be noticeable.
Bag Pattern:
In Color A, chain 16. 2 HDC into the 2nd chain, and the next 13, 3 HDC into the last chain, HDC into the next 13 along the opposite side of the foundation chain, HDC into the 1st stitch. Join. (32 HDC)
R2 – 12: Chain 1. HDC into each stitch around. Join. (32 HDC)
*I recommend weaving in the beginning tails after Round 3. Switch to Color B at the end of Round 12, and fasten off Color A.
R13: In Color B, chain 3, turn. Skip the next stitch, (DC into the next stitch, skip the next stitch) 15x. Join. (16 DC)
R14 – 15: Chain 1. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. Join. (32 SC)
Fasten off Color B and weave in the tail ends.

Tie Pattern:
In Color B, chain 2. Work 5 SC into the 1st chain, slip stitch to the 1st SC. Chain 64. Work 4 SC into the 2nd to last chain. Slip stitch join, & fasten off.
Weave in the tail ends, and set aside.

Crochet Leaf Video Tutorial:
Leaf Pattern – Make 2:
In Color C, chain 12. DC into the 4th chain, TR into the next chain, DTR into each of the next 2 chains, TR into the next chain, DC into the next chain, HDC into the next chain, SC into the next chain, slip stitch into the last chain, chain 2, slip stitch into the same chain, now turn to work along the opposite side of the foundation chain: SC into the next chain, HDC into the next chain, DC into the next chain, TR into the next chain, DTR into each of the next 2 chains, TR into the next chain, DC into the next chain, chain 2, slip stitch into the 1st stitch…
Fasten off here with a if you don’t want to work the vein, leaving a long tail to use to sew it on, or…
… surface slip stitch 8 down the center of the leaf. Fasten off with a long tail to use to sew on..
Weave in initial tail end on both.
Assembly:

Weave the tie in and out of Round 13, then sew the leaves onto the little round ends of the tie lining up the top center of the leaf with the top center of the round end of the tie.

How to Sew on Leaf Photo Tutorial:

Take long tail, and weave in on the wrong side…

… almost up to the top of the leaf.

Line up the top center of the leaf on top of the top center of the round circle at the end of the tie.

Insert the needle into the round circle end into the stitch closest to you, but not through the leaf…

Insert needle under several stitches of the wrong side of the leaf working across.

Insert needle back into the round circle end upwards into the stitch closest to you.

Insert needle into the next stitch on the round circle end, and also into the corresponding stitch of the leaf.

Insert needle into the next stitch to the right working into the leaf and then the round circle end.

Weave the tail end into the round circle end. I found it to be tight, and hurt my fingers, so I used jewelry pliers to carefully help me pull the tapestry needle through.

Thanks for sharing this pattern. Great colours.
Happy to share 🙂
When am I changing yarn colors from red to brown?
Oh no! Sorry for that, but thanks for catching it. The color change happens at the end of Round 12.
