Yay! This is the first post of the year for the 2017 GrannySpiration Challenge! I am so excited to see what everyone has been working on, especially you! At the end of this post, you will find the information for this month’s giveaway, and link up.
I knew I wanted to create a hat with a solid granny square band, but wasn’t set on how I wanted the body to be. After some brainstorming and working, it hit me! The pair of a solid granny square and the traditional granny stitch pattern – and I LOVE it! Especially with the aqua and white color combo – a great wintery color combo. What I did not realize was that the white wouldn’t photograph well… I only managed one photo I loved. Will work on another color combo and get some more pictures up.

Materials:
- 120 Yards each of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart’s With Love in Iced Aqua and White
- I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends & Sewing Closed
- Soft Tape Measure – Gauge is Essential
Material Notes:
Yardage is estimated based on appearance of skein. I would estimate you could make at least three of these hats with one skein each, if not four.
There are many yarns that would be perfect for slouchy hats! The first question I would start with is will it be for warm weather or cold weather? A cotton blend yarn like Berroco Modern Cotton or Lion Brand Coboo would be perfect for warmer weather, and an acrylic yarn or wool blend, like Lion Brand Wool Ease or Berroco Vintage would be better for cooler weather.
With the holes in the fabric, especially in the band, I would not use this slouchy hat in cold, windy weather, unless a second, solid layer was attached to the bottom of the band, which would cover your ears and provide warmth, but great for cooler Spring and Fall days.
We have lots of great crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop. The most popular, and preferred by Candace and Emily, are the Clover Amour Crochet Hooks with the soft handles and smooth metal hook. Alexandra prefers metal crochet hooks with large, ergonomic clay handles and just loves the fun designs from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! If your preference is wood, the LYKKE brand are lovely, smooth and sturdy.
Time Spent:
I didn’t realize that it took so long to finish because it seemed to work up so fast, but according to my math, was just under five hours. The band will take you the longest.
Measurements:
- First square measures 3″ x 3″.
- Band measures 10 1/4″ wide (when seamed).
- Hat is 10 1/4″ in length at the end of Round 16 (before seaming).
- Hat will fit average teen/adult.
Gauge (Essential):
Measured in Pattern.
Gauge it very important for hats. If you do not meet gauge, and continue making your hat, the finished size will either be too small or too big so make sure to stop and check it after working the first square. If you’re measuring smaller than the given measurements, go up a crochet hook size, and if you’re measuring larger, go down a crochet hook size. Rework the sample, take gauge again, and see where you are.
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- sc2tog – Single Crochet Two Stitches Together (to decrease)
- PLT – Pull Loop Through (a join-as-you-go method)
How to PLT: After DC in current piece, pull up a loop and pull out crochet hook, re-insert hook from the front through the corresponding stitch on Motif B [your corresponding piece] and pull loop through.
Pattern Notes:
Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.
Beginning chain in every round except Round 1 of the hat body counts as a stitch.
In the hat body, count the chain spaces and the join in between the chain spaces each as individual stitches. At the end of the band, you should have 80 stitches.
I love to use the Pull Loop Through join and I use it whenever possible, but feel free to replace this with your preferred joining method, making sure to check the band measurement as this may produce a slightly smaller width.
