I LOVE using facial scrubbies! I have made quite a few for myself, and don’t know why I never used them before. I used to use a paper towel/toilet paper plus rubbing alcohol to clean my face. These scrubbies are definitely MUCH better! They are washable, reusable, eco-friendly, and the texture of the cotton yarn feels great!
Just a note, Lily Sugar n Cream yarn is not color fast, which means that the colors are not pre-set, so they will run with use (even if just water). They still work great though.
This pattern was once named the “Robin’s Egg Slanted Shell Facial Scrubbies”, and I’ve changed that to “Suzette’s Facial Scrubbies” because after realizing many years later, it’s actually the Suzette Stitch, not the Slanted Shell Stitch, and since I have a few patterns in the Suzette line anyway, I added this one too.
Complete the set with a matching Suzette’s Washcloth!

Materials:
- For Set of 4, 80 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in Robin’s Egg, Mod Blue and Hot Green
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Bernat’s Handicrafter, Red Heart’s Smoothie, Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran,Β Rico Creative Cotton Aran
Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.
Time Spent:
About 10 Minutes Each.
Measurements:
3.5″ Wide by 3.75″ in Length
Gauge:
16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4″
Abbreviations:
- DC – Double Crochet
- SC – Single Crochet
Pattern Notes:
Typically, the slanted shell pattern is worked into the 2nd chain of an even numbered chain. I, however, feel that working into this stitch causes the project to come out uneven and bunched up. You will find my pattern is worked into the 3rd chain of an odd numbered chain.
Border will add 0.25″ to each side, 0.5″ to total width/height.
When working the border, make sure after working down the first side that your corner is worked into the first chain that was created when we skipped it in the beginning of the pattern by working into the 3rd chain from the hook. This will keep your coaster from pulling up on the ends, and from the border coming out uneven.
If your foundation row side starts to bunch after border is worked, just tug at sides a little and it will even out. This happens from crocheting over your original tail piece.
Pattern:
Chain 11. SC & DC in the 3rd chain from the hook, [skip next stitch, (SC, DC) in the next stitch] across. (5 clusters)
R2 – R8: Chain 1, turn. (SC, DC) in the 2nd stitch, [skip next stitch, (SC, DC) in the next stitch] across.
Border: Chain 1, turn. 2 SC in the first stitch, SC in the next 8 stitches, 3 SC in the next stitch – corner, evenly work 8 SC down the first side, 3 SC in the next stitch – corner, SC in the next 8 stitches along the opposite side of the foundation chain, 3 SC in the next stitch – corner – evenly work 8 SC up the second side, add one SC in the last/first stitch to form the final corner. Join to first SC.
Fasten Off, and Weave in Ends.

This is so interesting! Do you use any particular type of rubbing alcohol? I haven't learned to crochet properly yet, but it's on it's way…
knots1prime says
I just use a general rubbing alcohol from wherever I happen to be shopping at. Since I only use it for cleaning my face, it lasts quite a while. Doesn't work for everyone, but I am so glad at wonders it does for me.
Cotton yarn is a tougher yarn to use in the beginning – just takes a little getting use to. It's wonderful for so many things though!
I have a beginner friendly series in the works. If there is anything in particular you would like some help with – feel free to drop me a line!
Thanks for your comment π

A friend of mine who makes a lot of dish cloths said that she boils them for 5 minutes to eliminate some of the excess dye. I need to ask if it shrinks them any. I use the one she gave me for my face – too pretty for dishes π I’m making a stash of mini scrubbies now.
Alexandra says
Interesting! Does the boiling make them really fade? This yarn isn’t colorfast, so they will continue to run even if it doesn’t show. I do love how the cotton feels against my skin though.

I’ve never thought to use a crochet facecloth before. These are so pretty too! Pinned to my crochet board

Oh, they feel amazing against the skin!

These are a great idea and I’m sure work amazingly well. My mother used to make something similar asD a dishcloth and they were the best at cleaning dishes. Thanks for sharing this week. #HomeMattersParty

I’ve tried to use these to wash dishes with, as I prefer something small in my hand, but I wasn’t too impressed with it alone. I am thinking about maybe sewing on a scratchy sponge so I can have a scratchy side, and a soft side.

What a cool crochet project! I bet they do feel nice on your face.
Thank you for sharing on Creative Compulsions!
