This is a free crochet pattern explaining how to crochet the Endless Summer Afghan Square perfect for so many projects, like afghans, tote bags, scarves and more!
Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.
This afghan square was originally designed for and published in the March 2019 issue of Knotions Magazine as part of the Endless Summer Tote Bag, which you can now find for free here on the EyeLoveKnots blog. With this square alone, there are endless possibilities of what you can create with it!
The photos you see are from the original pattern I worked up, but I’ve updated the pattern 03/31/22 to give a more even, finished look, rather than the middle sides and corner change spaces bowing out, and needing to block to get the single square even. I am not a blocker, and while it fixes itself when sewn together to other squares without the need to block, I wanted a beautiful single square that could stand on it’s own.
The flower itself is my take on a Hydrangea. For many projects that I want the Hydrangea look, I use my Frilly Flower pattern, but for this project, I wanted to create the same look but by working in the round so I could easily transform it into a square, rather than sew it on later.
While there are so many different colorways that are simply stunning, I think what I like the most about them is the texture I see when I look at the bunch of little flowers all together.

What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Floral Afghan Square:
- 35 Yards of Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart’s Super Saver in Soft White, Turqua (Blue) and Tea Leaf (Green)
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
What Other Yarns Can I Use to Crochet a Floral Afghan Square:
I used Red Heart Super Saver, however, you can work this square up in any yarn with respective hook. Yarn alternatives that are similar to Red Heart Super Saver include Bernat’s Super Value Yarn, Caron’s One Pound and Hobby Lobby’s Crafters Secret.
In working my video tutorial, I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn, and weighed it out as 12 yards Blue, 8 yards Green and 8 yards White. I rounded up for the yardage in the Material Notes section for good measure.
Measurements:
- With Red Heart Super Saver & H8/5mm: 4.75″ (or 4 3/4″)
- With WeCrochet Dishie & H8/5mm: 4.88″ (or 4 7/8″)
Abbreviations:
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- TR – Treble (or Triple) Crochet
- RS – Right Side
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
Pattern Notes:
When working in the round, traditionally, you hold your initial tail to the back of the ring, and then crochet over it and then pull the tail to close the ring. Because the first four rounds are the wrong side (or WS), in these squares, you will work in a similar manner but on the side facing you. After you chain 1, and turn, then you’ll pull the tail over to the left to crochet over it.
Slip stitch join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain, unless otherwise noted.
I like to split my beginning increases to help keep my seam less noticeable. If done the traditional way, you will see a more visible seam, and separation in the raised part of the flowers. For the square, you will work the first stitch of the first increase as usual, and then the last stitch of the first increase into the same as the first stitch, working just to the right of the beginning chain. In Rounds 3 and 4, we’ll begin our first stitch into the second stitch to continue to keep it looking seamless.
