Hi there! I am Shawna from @doubleknottedcrochet on Instagram [Double Knotted Crochet on Facebook]. When Alexandra approached me to become a guest contributor here at EyeLoveKnots, I about fell out of my chair. I had been following her since I discovered her Celtic Weave Bauble Ornament pattern. As it were, I was thinking over how I was going to share my first pattern, the Northside Earwarmer, for free and on a platform that was already established. This collaboration just made sense!
When all the twisted earwarmer patterns started coming out this past fall, I fell in love and I knew I had to make one that was both crocheted, and had a lot of texture to really stand out. In came the extended moss stitch, which then spurred the name of Northside Earwarmer, as moss famously prefers to grow on the north side of trees.
This pattern is perfect for those who need an earwarmer pattern to make for markets as it can be made in about 30 minutes, and I can get 4 out of a skein of yarn! So on to it, shall we?
If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, Ravelry or LoveCrafts Shop for a small fee. Materials:
- 90 yards of a weight 4, worsted yarn. I used I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby
- H8/5mm crochet hook
- #20 Tapestry needle for sewing in ends
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Berroco’s Vintage.
Time Spent:
It takes me just over 30 minutes to make one earwarmer from start to finish.
Measurements:
Finished item is 9 1/2 inches wide once sewn together, and 4 inches tall.
Size suitable for child, teen and adult small (can be easily adjusted to fit any size – see pattern notes for multiple).
Gauge:
13 DC by 7 rows = 4″
Abbreviations:
- SC – single crochet
- HDC – half double crochet
- DC – double crochet
Pattern Notes:
To get the great texture in this earwarmer, the extended moss stitch is used.
Make note that in much of the pattern, you are working into the row below the previous row.
This pattern is worked in multiples of 2+1 if you would like to increase the overall width for larger heads, or decrease accordingly.
The twist is made by sandwiching the two ends together and sewing shut. See picture below pattern for reference.
Pattern:
Chain 69, SC into the 2nd chain from hook, and across. Turn.
R2: Chain 3, DC into the next stitch, chain 1, skip the next SC, (DC into the next SC, chain 1, skip the next SC, DC into the next SC) across until last 2 stitches, then DC into the last 2 stitches. Turn.
R3: Chain 2, HDC into the next DC, chain 1, skip the next DC, (DC into the next SC below the chain 1 space, chain 1, DC into the next SC below the chain 1 space) across until last 2 stitches, then HDC into the next stitch, HDC into the top of the chain 3 from the previous row. Turn.
R4: Chain 2, HDC into the next HDC, chain 1, skip the next DC, (DC into the DC below the chain 1 space, chain 1, DC into the DC below the chain 1 space) across until last 2 stitches, then HDC into the next stitch, HDC into the top of the chain 2 from the previous row. Turn.
R5 – 11: Repeat row 4.
R12: Chain 1, SC into the same stitch as chain, SC into the next HDC, (SC into the next DC, DC into the DC below the chain 1 space) across until last 2 stitches, then SC into the next HDC, SC into the top of the chain 2. Turn.
R13: Chain 1, SC into the same stitch, and into each stitch across. Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Flip earwarmer over, gather ends together as pictured and sew with long tail. Weave in both ends and flip earwarmer inside out.

I’m trying to follow your pattern, but I can’t understand how you gather the ends to join. Can you explain this, please? Thank you!
Holly, it can be quite tricky to gather those ends correctly! Here is a youtube video that shows this type of join. Please let us know if you need further help!
I’m having trouble with the lack of another chain at the end of “DC in next SC, chain, skip a SC, DC in next SC” on row 2! It seems like there shouldn’t be two DCs next to each other all the way down the row, with chains only in between each set of two DCs, which is how I’m reading it. In row 3, I’m having the same issue and losing stitches by the end of the row. What am I missing?
Thank you! 😊
Sue,
Are you counting your beginning CH3 as a DC? The beginning of each row should have a CH3 and a DC, then a chain and skip a stitch before working into the next.
Each row will have 2 stitches side by side with no skips and then the rest of the row will have a DC, then a skip and then a DC until the last two stitches, which will also be side by side.
I found a video from The Crochet Crowd that explains this stitch pattern very nicely. I have linked it here for you. Please reach out if you continue to have issues.

that video helped a lot! I was unsure about the stitch, so thank you!
I learned how to crochet from Youtube and link to videos every chance I can!
It is -38℃ (-36.4℉) here this morning. I don’t like wearing toques so your ear warmers would really come in handy right now! Showing my daughter this so she can make one for me.
I don’t care for toques either – much rather have an earwarmer (so I can still wear my hair up). Let me know if your daughter isn’t able to work one up for you – I would love to!
I absolutely love that pattern! Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned.
so cozy and gorgeous, thanks for sharing on craft schooling Sunday!

Ditto! But I still like to keep my hair up in a bun. Earwarmers are perfect!
Has anyone worked out the number of beginning stitches needed for a medium adult size?
What head size fit are you looking for? The finished earwarmer measures 19″ in circumference, and will stretch to fit a head size of 21″-22″.
It looks so cosy, and I like the cross over detail! What a great thing for winter 🙂
Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! A new link up is live on my blog now, I’d love you to join again.
Hope you had a wonderful weekend! We went to a theme park yesterday with family visiting from Western Australia and it was so fun 🙂
Beautiful pattern and texture. Thanks for sharing it at the #HomeMattersParty this week.
Hi Alexandra, I haven’t made one of your patterns yet but this is one I am definitely going to make this year.
That’s darling! I think I could even make this one. I’ve featured it today at Thursday Favorite Things!
Thank you for sharing this on Traffic Jam Weekend! It has been chosen as a fave feature for this week’s party going live on Thursday at 5:00 pm CST.
Terrific pattern! My granddaughter cut off her long locks, so her messy-bun caps are outdated. (I may add pom poms to get more mileage out of them.) However, winter has come to our part of the US, and this ear warmer would suit her to a T. Thanks for the free pattern
You could make removable pom poms with a large button to fill the hole (if it’s not too big). Earwarmers are my go to though. So easy to wear, and cozy.
Just wondering what the numbers would be make up a med adult size and large ?
Because of how stretchy yarn is, I don’t even make headgear to a medium size. I follow adult small is 22″-23″, and adult large is 23″-24″.
Right now, this earwarmer has a circumference of 19″, and stretches to fit the adult small size. To make for an adult large, I’d add 6 more stitches to get a finished piece of about 21 3/8″.
This was designed by Double Knotted Crochet. You can double check with her on IG or FB if you’d like. I do remember her recently replying to an IG comment, and saying this size in this pattern is what she makes and sells in her shop online and craft fairs, and she hasn’t had anyone request a bigger size.
