Pebbled Texture Crochet Hat – Crochet Pattern Review – Yarnspirations

September 2, 2020

This is a crochet pattern review on the Pebbled Texture Crochet Hat from Yarnspirations.

Shawna from Double Knotted Crochet here to bring in Fall with a crochet pattern review of the Pebbled Texture Hat from Yarnspirations.

Before we jump in, you might like to see what I shared last month here at EyeLoveKnots – Indoor Snowball Fight, a free crochet pattern that I designed.

Now, this hat has been my favorite free beanie pattern since I first learned how to crochet nearly 4 years ago. As soon as I was able to make standard double crochet hats, I found myself drawn to this pattern when I first stumbled upon it. The front and back post double crochets intimidated me at first, but following along with Mikey from the Crochet Crowd on his YouTube Tutorial helped so much. I still have yet to find something that works up as quick and unique.

Since I focus entirely on baby and children’s items in my crochet business, I only crochet the child size, which is listed at 6/8 in the pattern. I find it fits more for children 4 – 10 and currently stock it in my Double Knotted Crochet Etsy shop.

If you’re able to participate in craft markets in your area, these are always a hit. Children and adults alike are drawn to the bright colors all lined up and the fluffy poms.

If you need some more ideas for your shop/market prep, I shared Four Free Tried & True Baby Crochet Patterns.

Materials Used:

  • 1/2 skein of Red Heart Super Saver in Retro Stripes. I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby also works very well
  • I9/5.5 mm Hook
  • Yarn Needle
  • Small Button
  • Faux Fur Pom with elastic loop
  • Small amount of thread
  • Scissors

Material Notes:

I, like most crocheters, have a serious love obsession with Red Heart Retro Stripes. While I usually am not a huge fan of Red Heart yarn, I will always make an exception for this delightful colorway. The stripes seem to lay out so perfectly every single time in every single project. Noting the popularity of unicorns and rainbows, it made sense to theme my Pebble Texture Hats in rainbows for my audience.

For the Retro Stripes yarn, I pair a plain white pom and for the solid colors I make from I Love This Yarn, I pair a rainbow dipped pom – both found on Amazon. The poms have little elastic loops and so instead of sewing them directly to the hat, I sew a small button to the inside of the crown and loop the elastic around it. This way, the hats can be machine washed and the poms can be removed so they won’t get damaged.

I also use an I9/5.5mm hook rather than a H8/5mm hook as the pattern calls for. I find that I often have tighter tension than most patterns and such was the case in this pattern as well. Going up just half a hook size helped relax my hat in all the right ways.

Time Spent:

It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes for one hat from start to finish, including attaching the pom.

Measurements:

My hat measurements do differ from the pattern a bit at 8″ from crown to brim and 18″ circumference, stretching to fit heads up to 21″. I find this fits the children in my life much better than the measurements listed in the pattern.

Pattern Notes:

This pattern can seem intimidating at first because of the crossing front and back post double crochets, but using Mikey’s YouTube Tutorial and following along will help you get the swing of it. The pattern, once established, is a two row repeat and goes very quickly.

As mentioned under gauge and measurements, I do make mine to be 8 inches long and a bit broader in circumference than listed. I find this size fits the children in my life (of which there are many) much better. I’ll also admit right here and now – I am a bad crocheter and hardly ever do gauge swatches, which is always the case when I make this hat.

I also changed the brim slightly to a flatter style. I crocheted the first round of the brim as listed. For the next two rounds, I crochet into the back loop only and do not turn my hat at the end of each round. This creates a much cleaner look and goes a bit more quickly, which I am all about!

Those snowballs are amazing. I love the texture of them. I think they’d make adorable ornaments for my granddaughters Christmas tree in their guestroom. Love it.
