18″ C2C Alphabet Square – Free Crochet Pattern

January 16, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet an 18″ C2C alphabet square perfect for throw pillows, wall hanging and afghans.

Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.

I’ve had this pattern in the works for a while, and had full intentions of sharing some “JOY” throw pillows this past holiday season, but I never actually finished making the pillow backs, so with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, I decided to work up some fun “X” and “O” pillows. I may even add a basket to my entryway table, and add the pillows there to decorate with since I don’t have that many Valentine’s Day decor piece.

While I’m creating throw pillows with mine, you can…

  • use them as afghan squares and sew a bunch together to make a blanket or a small rug
  • string the square up on a dowel and use as a wall hanging
  • use the square as a doily on a table
  • use the square as the star of the show of a cardigan or top
  • any other ideas? I’d love to add them to the list!

Ad-Free, Printer Friendly PDF:

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop or LoveCrochet Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the views lost when you no longer need to return to the blog to for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!

Not Available on Ravelry as the square itself. Ravelry removed this 01/31 as a “duplicate pattern”, stating it was exactly the same pattern as my throw pillow, which it is not, but they won’t allow it, so for a PDF, you can use the pattern for the throw pillow, and just disregard the additional info.

Materials:

  • 300ish Yards Total of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart’s Super Saver in Buff and Soft White
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value. I like these and Red Heart Super Saver for my home projects because it’s durable, and machine washes and dries well.

If size isn’t essential to your project you can use any yarn from your stash with respective crochet hook.

Red Heart Super Saver is an inconsistent yarn. While the overall gauge isn’t important, it is important that the gauge for both yarns that you use are the same. I had to use an H8/5mm for my Soft White, and I9/5.5mm for my Buff.

My samples were an “O”, in which I used 173 yards of Buff, and 74 yards of White, and an “X”, in which I used 170 yards of Buff, and 107 yards of White.

Time Spent:

The letter “X” took me about 4 hours to complete.

Gauge:

5 Boxes = 4.25″ Wide by 4.13″ Tall

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • C2C – Corner to Corner [in DC] (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

Square grows from the bottom right corner upward.

This pattern is written with colors and boxes only. If you would like more details on how to work the corner to corner technique, check out my Corner to Corner in Double Crochet Photo Tutorial.

If you’d like to turn your square into a throw pillow, visit my Basic C2C Throw Pillow pattern, and follow the instructions for the respective size.

Beginning chain 2 counts as a double crochet, but beginning chain 1 doesn’t.

A box is comprised of four double crochet’s.

The “space under the same chain joined to” is defined as the space between the last two double crochets of the previous rows box.

Working the final double crochet into the top of the chain from the previous row helps to keep the edge more even. After completing the first box, you may also need to lightly tug on it to keep it even as well.

I can’t think of any other ideas for these alphabet letters but they are definitely such fun. Good luck with your pillows and I hope you share them next time. #HomeMattersParty

Thank you so very much for the free pattern of the entire alphabet. I plan on making a dowel hanger to use at the baby shower of my future niece. Will definitely post mine when completed. ❤

I’m so glad you like it, Beth! I’m happy to share, and you’ve inspired me to kick it into gear with posting the details for the wall hanging I made – I have it coming to the blog tomorrow!

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
