Haylee Hand Towel – Free Crochet Pattern

June 12, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet a beginner friendly hand towel worked in simple half double crochet stitches. Work in a solid color, add stripes, or do some stashbusting.

Handmade hand towels are a favorite of mine. I love to make them, display them and use them in my kitchen. With 4th of July around the corner, I wanted to make an easy hand towel similar to my Seeing Stars Throw Pillow that uses my Haylee Throw Pillow as the base.

My Haylee series is an easy, beginner friendly line that features simple half double crochet stitches. It’s one of my favorite stitch patterns because it creates a beautiful texture and fabric.

This hand towel is perfect for the kitchen, or the bathroom, and looks great in a solid color or stripes – you can even pull out your cotton scraps, and stashbust. I use my hand towel purely for drying my hands and decoration, but if you use yours to clean up messes, keep in mind, they may stain your fabric.

Keep in mind that 100% cotton yarn will stretch while hung, and used. In a 6 month time period, my C2C hand towel stretched just under 2″ in length. I didn’t measure it again after that (especially since it really didn’t matter to me), but if you want something that will keep it’s shape a little better, try using a blend of mostly cotton paired with acrylic (as long as not using with heated items), polyester or wool.

I also only use my crocheted hand towels for drying my hands.

Materials:

  • Worsted Weight (#4) Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie: 380 Yards of Silver, 31 Yards of Swan
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart Smoothie

Dishie Yarn is a touch thinner than Lily Sugar n Cream – you may need to go down a hook size with this yarn if it’s your choice, though gauge is not essential in this project if the finished size isn’t.

I usually recommend jewelry pliers to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Dishie Yarn is really smooth, and easy to weave the yarn in and out of.

Time Spent:

I had my hand towel done in just under four and a half hours.

Measurements:

15.75″ Wide by 26.5″ in Length

Gauge:

15 HDC by 11 Rows = 4″ by 3.75″

Abbreviations (US Term):

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Haylee Hand Towel Pattern:

In Silver, chain 57. HDC into the 3rd chain (skipped chains count as a stitch), and into each chain across. (56 HDC)

R2 – 75: Chain 1, turn. HDC into the 1st HDC, and into each HDC across. (56 HDC)

Border: In Swan, chain 1 and turn. HDC into the 1st 55 HDC, 3 HDC into the next HDC, evenly HDC 112 down the side of the hand towel (that’s 3 HDC per 2 rows), 3 HDC into the next stitch, HDC 54 along the opposite side of the foundation chain, 3 HDC into the next stitch, evenly HDC 112 up the side of the hand towel (that’s 3 HDC per 2 rows), 1 HDC into the same as the first HDC. Slip stitch join to the first HDC.

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Please feel free to make and sell your own Haylee Hand Towel using this pattern, but please DO NOT claim this pattern as your own nor should you sell my pattern, and DO NOT re-publish my photos as your own. DO NOT copy and paste my pattern anywhere, link to it instead.

Thanks so much! It’s been tough to figure out what colors I have wanted to narrow down for my home decor but it seems that gray is definitely a winner

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
