Buffalo Plaid Shay Coasters – Free Crochet Pattern | Single Crochet Coasters Pattern

December 10, 2022

This is a free crochet pattern and video tutorial showing for how to crochet the Buffalo Plaid Shay Coasters, worked in simple single crochet stitches. You can also use this little square as a mini washcloth, or large facial scrubbie.

This post contains affiliate links for WeCrochet, Lion Brand and LoveCrafts. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

My Shay series features easy crochet patterns worked in simple single crochets. I do want to mention though that this crochet pattern is more advanced because of carrying the yarns, but definitely something a confident beginner could do! If you would like something a bit easier, you can start with my Shay Coasters, which are beginner friendly and worked in a solid color.

Each year, I add a new piece to my Buffalo Plaid collection, usually plastic canvas, but I thought this year, I’d start with my Shay Coasters pattern as a base, and adjust it so I could work it in the Buffalo Plaid pattern. I worked a chart for boxes worked with 4 stitches, but I liked the balance a bit more in the pattern worked with boxes of 3 stitches to that’s what we have here. I am so happy with how they turned out!

What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Coaster?

  • Less than 2 Yards Per Square & 10 Yards for the Border of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn in Black, Silver, White and Fiesta Red
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart Smoothie, Crafters Secret Cotton

Dishie Yarn is a touch thinner than Lily Sugar n Cream – you may need to go down a hook size with this yarn if it’s your choice, though gauge is not essential in this project if the finished size isn’t.

If you are only making a coaster that will house a cold or hot beverage, you can use acrylic as an alternative with an I9/5.5mm hook – just do not put anything fresh from the oven on the acrylic coaster, or you will melt the fibers and risk burning yourself.

If you wanted to use a wool or synthetic, some great yarns I recommend are {wools} WeCrochet Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease, {non-wools} WeCrochet Brava, and Red Heart Super Saver with an I9/5.5mm crochet hook for the body.

I usually recommend jewelry pliers to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Dishie Yarn is really smooth, and easy to weave the yarn in and out of.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Coaster?

About 45 minutes each.

Measurements:

4″ Wide by 4.25″ (4 1/4″) Tall

Gauge, Not Essential:

  • In a Solid Color: 13 SC = 3.5″ (3 1/2″) Wide
  • In Pattern: 15 SC = 3.63″ (3 5/8″) Wide

Abbreviation (US Term):

  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch.

The chain multiple 3 + 1. If you are looking for a smaller or larger piece, you can subtract or add to the chain by 3, or try going down or up a hook size.

To change yarn colors, work up to the last yarn over of the previous stitch, then yarn over with the new color and pull through. When changing colors from the Wrong Side, bring old color strand to the Wrong Side/front to crochet over.

As you work, single crochet over the unused strand held to the back from the Right Side (odd numbered rows), and held to the front from the Wrong Side (even numbered rows) to carry it across.

Optional: When working from the Right Side, SC just below normal (but still within the stitch) to include the carried strand to cover it up (because I find it still pops through even trying to keep it out of sight). I find I only need to do this with the first and second stitches.

Beginning at the end of Row 1: From the Right Side, finish the row as usual, then chain 1, and turn so you’re on the Wrong Side, and work the first stitch as normal but not over carried yarn, then begin working over the strand in the second stitch. Also from the Wrong Side, don’t work over the strand for the last stitch. Chain 1, and turn so you’re on the Right Side, and work the first stitch as normal but not over carried yarn, then begin working over the strand in the second stitch.

Gray from the black plaid, and Maroon from the red plaid are main colors. These will stay throughout, but fasten off the other colors after completing the block (aka 3 stitches wide by 3 stitches tall). This does result in quite a few ends to weave in (16 in total), but you won’t have any large floats carried across the back. Carrying up the side isn’t an option as the rows are an odd number for each box.

Buffalo Plaid Shay Coaster, Video Tutorial:

Shay Coaster, Written Pattern:

This is the basic pattern for the coasters. Use this as the base, but change colors as laid out below in the Black Plaid and Red Plaid versions. If you don’t want to change colors, you can always just have a solid coaster following these instructions, though the sizing will be larger as there isn’t a yarn carried within it:

Chain 16. SC in the 2nd chain, and each chain across the row. (15 SC)

R2 – 15: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch across the row. (15 SC)

Border: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st 14 stitches, (SC, chain 1, SC) into the last stitch, evenly SC (that’s one SC per row) down 14 stitches, (SC, chain 1, SC) into the last stitch, SC 13 evenly across the opposite side of the foundation chain, (SC, chain 1, SC) into the last stitch, evenly SC up 14 stitches, SC into the same stitch as the first, then slip stitch join to the first SC. (62 SC + 4 chain 1 spaces)

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Buffalo Plaid Shay Coaster, Written Pattern in Black Plaid:

In desired border color, chain 16. Switch to White (if not currently). SC into the 2nd, 3rd and 4th chains from the hook, (in Gray: SC into each of the next 3 stitches, in White: SC into each of the next 3 stitches) 2x. (15 SC)

R2 – 3: Chain 1, turn. 3 White SC, (3 Gray SC, 3 White SC) 2x.

R4 – 6: Chain 1, turn. 3 Gray SC, (3 Black SC, 3 Gray) 2x.

R7 – 9: Chain 1, turn. 3 White SC, (3 Gray SC, 3 White SC) 2x.

R10 – 12: Chain 1, turn. 3 Gray SC, (3 Black SC, 3 Gray) 2x.

R13 – 15: Chain 1, turn. 3 White SC, (3 Gray SC, 3 White SC) 2x.

At the end of Row 15, switch to your desired border color (if not currently).

Buffalo Plaid Shay Coaster, Written Pattern in Red Plaid:

In desired border color, chain 16. Switch to Red (if not currently). SC into the 2nd, 3rd and 4th chains from the hook, (in Maroon: SC into each of the next 3 stitches, in Red: SC into each of the next 3 stitches) 2x. (15 SC)

R2 – 3: Chain 1, turn. 3 Red SC, (3 Maroon SC, 3 Red SC) 2x.

R4 – 6: Chain 1, turn. 3 Maroon SC, (3 Black SC, 3 Maroon) 2x.

R7 – 9: Chain 1, turn. 3 Red SC, (3 Maroon SC, 3 Red SC) 2x.

R10 – 12: Chain 1, turn. 3 Maroon SC, (3 Black SC, 3 Maroon) 2x.

R13 – 15: Chain 1, turn. 3 Red SC, (3 Maroon SC, 3 Red SC) 2x.

At the end of Row 15, switch to your desired border color (if not currently).

Buffalo plaid has been so popular in recent years. These coasters are both attractive and functional. Pretty colors, too! Thank you for sharing this post in the Talent Sharing Tuesdays Link-Up 45.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
