When I selected this crochet pattern, it was because I was tagged in a photo of it on Facebook and I thought, “That’s so cute!” and “I know several people with backyard chickens that would get a kick out of this as a little gift!”.
But as I was finishing up my project, I saw several people referring to this specific pattern, asking how much others are charging for their Mabel chickens. I had no idea this was going to blow up so fast but it’s no surprise: The pattern is great, and the chicken is absolutely adorable!
Looking for something to go with your chicken? How about a nest full of Quick & Easy Eggs?
WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET a CHICKEN?
- Super Bulky #6 Yarn – I used Loops & Threads Black & White Tweed Yarn
- Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver Lemon, Cherry Red and Black
- Optional: 10 mm Black Safety Eyes
- Size L11/8mm Crochet Hook
- Poly-fil
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Mabel Chicken, Paid Crochet Pattern from oakandmarlow on Etsy
MATERIAL NOTES:
For the eyes, you can use 10 mm Black Safety Eyes, felt circles or do like I did and use black yarn to embroider the eyes.
This yarn does call for Super Bulky #6 Yarn for all parts of the chicken, but I didn’t have it in Red, Black and Yellow so I used three strands of Red Heart Super Saver Yarn held together. The pattern does say that you can use a different weight of yarn, but it will change the size of the finished chicken. I opted for using three strands together to more closely imitate the bulk of the size 6 yarn.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET a CHICKEN?
The chicken took me a total of 45 minutes to make. It is a very quick pattern so you can make yourself a whole flock of chickens in an afternoon!
MEASUREMENTS:
The measurement for the finished chicken is approximately 5.5 inches tall. It nests nicely in the palm of your hands.
GAUGE:
There is no gauge given for this pattern. This pattern is worked in a continuous round. My personal gauge is 6 single crochets, increasing for 5 rounds for a 3.5 inch diameter.
PATTERN NOTES:
The Mabel Chicken pattern is fun, fast and as cute as they come! This is one of my top favorite patterns. I love how quickly and easily it works up and using bulky yarn leaves you with a snuggly little chicken!
There are so many color options for these and size variations you could do. I also thought putting a little bag filled with some rice in the bottom would give it some nice weight for displaying your creation!

The chicken’s comb was done using two half double crochets and a slip stitch in a chain of two. Thanks for asking!
