Our family has a dog, a golden retriever named Stella. She is the best dog anyone could ask for! So in honor of International Dog Day (which was August 26th), I made this charming little paw coaster! I even did it in golden shades, just like Stella.

This coaster is a whimsical little touch that’s fun to bring out for guests or to have at your desk, where it can be noticed and admired. Give a fellow dog lover “paws” when you gift them a set of these coasters!

This is designed to be a coaster, but it is a fairly small one. It could easily be turned into an ornament or applique for another piece, or you can use a larger hook size to increase the size of your coaster. I also worked my coaster in Red Heart Super Saver, but if you worked your coaster in a 100% cotton yarn like Queensland Coastal Cotton, then it would also come out larger as the stitches of cotton fabric are more relaxed.

WHAT MATERIALS DO You NEED TO CROCHET A PAW COASTER?

  • Worsted Weight #4 Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver in Gold and Buff
  • 7/4.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Paw Coaster, Paid Crochet Pattern from RubyBurt via Etsy

MATERIAL NOTES:

The designer specifies using worsted weight cotton yarn for the pattern and a size 4mm crochet hook. I opted for the 4.5mm hook because I know I crochet with a tighter tension than most.

I made it to the second to last round of the coaster using my cotton yarn and it did NOT look good. I will admit that maybe that was on me, but my coaster was not shaping up to look anything like the pattern designer’s coaster. I scrapped that one and I opted for acrylic worsted weight yarn… it looks so much better! I am much happier with the outcome of the second attempt than my first.

Cotton yarn is more durable and absorbent, but you can easily use any worsted weight yarn out of your stash like I did! Even though Red Heart Super Saver is a 100% acrylic yarn, a hot cup of coffee is not hot enough to melt synthetic fibers, and while it doesn’t quite absorb the same way with cold beverages, it still holds the water and does not seep through to the surface. Lion Brand Wool Ease is another lovely yarn for coasters that I have used for some in my personal collection, and the wool adds to the durability and absorbency.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET A PAW COASTER?

This coaster works up really fast, even with the frequent color changes. It took me 30 minutes to make one. A whole set could be done in a matter of hours!

What size should a crocheted coaster be?

There were no final measurements given in the pattern. My paw coaster measures 3.75 inches wide at the widest points and 3.25 inches in height from the top of the highest toe to the base of the paw.

Gauge:

There is no gauge for this pattern. However, my paw had a diameter of 2.25 inches at the end of round 2. Please note, that is with the slightly larger hook size and the acrylic yarn versus the cotton.

PATTERN NOTES:

I have to be honest… this crochet pattern was lacking when it came to instruction. There are photos, which are helpful but there was no indication of when to change color, whether or not rounds should be joined or total stitch count after each round. This is a really easy pattern to decipher from the photos and being a seasoned crocheter, it wasn’t a hinderance to me. But for someone less practiced, it could be frustrating to navigate.

Other than that, the pattern works up well and its outcome is obviously very cute! In fact, Stella gives it a paw of approval! (Please, ignore the Grinch paws Stella is rocking at the moment!)
