My most successful markets have all been at farms, so I figured it would only be fitting to add some more farm animals to my market inventory. I already had Mabel chickens, cows, ducks, and kittens made, so I went searching some of my favorite designers’ Etsy shops to find some more cute farm animals. When I saw the Poppy Pig pattern by Rose and Lily Amigurumi, I knew I had to try it out!
I love how realistic the Poppy Pig pattern turns out. The finished stuffie is a cute and friendly-looking pig with a curious look on its face and all the important features. The curly tail, the details in the snout, and the floppy ears are all perfect characteristics. I can’t wait to debut this adorable pig stuffie at my upcoming fall markets.
What Do You Need to Crochet a Pig Stuffie?

- Poppy Pig, Paid Crochet Patterns by RoseAndLilyCrochet via Etsy
Material Notes:
The Poppy Pig pattern calls for chunky or super chunky plush yarn. I used Lion Brand’s Cover Story yarn in the color Cameo. I am estimating that I probably could have made about three of these Poppy Pigs with one of the large cakes of Cover Story. The designer indicated in the pattern that she used Hobbii Baby Snuggle Solid in Soft Pink and that she used approximately one 100 gram skein. Some alternative yarn choices for this project could include Bernat Blanket, Bernat Baby Blanket, Himilaya Dolphin Baby, or James C Brett Flutterby Chunky.
In addition to the yarn, you will also need a hook that works well with amigurumi made in chunky yarn. I used my K10.5/6.5 mm Clover Amour ergonomic crochet hook. The designer used a G6/4.5 mm crochet hook. When choosing what size crochet hook to use, you want to make sure that your stitches are tight enough together to make sure that stuffing doesn’t come through the gaps between stitches. Depending on your tension, the hook size you need will vary.
To assemble and finish the Poppy Pig, you will need stuffing to fill the body of the pig, a yarn needle, a very small amount of black worsted weight yarn to sew on the eyebrows and snout lines, and eyes. For the stuffing, I would recommend having the equivalent of half of a small bag of stuffing. Depending on how full you want to stuff your pig, this amount will vary. It can sometimes be difficult to sew together stuffed pieces, so I recommend a steel yarn needle to make the assembly easier. For the pig’s eyes, I chose to use black felt eyes that I attached with hot glue. The pattern calls for 9 mm safety eyes if you choose to use those instead.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Pig Stuffie?
It took me about 2 and a half hours to finish the Poppy Pig from start to finish.
How Big is the Finished Poppy Pig Stuffie?
The finished Poppy Pig stuffie measures about 13 inches long from snout to tail, a little over 6 inches wide, and about 5.5 inches tall.
Gauge:
I used a K10.5/6.5mm hook with Lion Brand Cover Story yarn. A magic circle with 6 single crochets measured approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.
Gauge is not critical in this type of project. You mainly just want to make sure that there are not gaps between stitches so that the stuffing does not come through. If you notice gaps, you will want to go down a hook size.
Making Poppy Pig:
To make a Poppy Pig, you will want to have experience working in the round and making amigurumi. This pattern does require some sewing, so you want to make sure you know how to assemble pieces together. Overall, this is a relatively beginner-friendly pattern. While I would not recommend it as a very first pattern, the directions are very clear and there is a full-length video tutorial linked in the pattern that you can use for help, making this a good choice for someone relatively new or experienced with amigurumi.
The body and the head are all crocheted in one piece, which I really appreciated. There are a few spots when making the head where you will have to add in some extra stitches to make sure you are positioning your stitches in the correct places to get the right head shape. There are clear pictures provided throughout the pattern to show how to align stitches. The directions for the head and body are very specific about when to add the eyes and when to stuff each part.
In addition to creating the head and body, you will separately crochet four feet and two ears. These pieces all have easy-to-follow directions. There were also clear directions about how to attach these pieces to the body. The pigs tail is actually crocheted right on to the back of the body. After assembling all the pieces, the final touches include sewing on eyebrows and snout lines. The pattern is also really specific in where to add these features.
I think the Poppy Pig pattern was really excellently written and provides tons of details for the reader. The addition of a full-length video tutorial really makes this pattern worth every penny! If you are looking for a cute pig pattern, I would definitely recommend Poppy Pig! I’m looking forward to also making the smaller version of Poppy Pig – Pippa Pig.
