Despite what my husband says, I consider this time of the year to be winter (at least where I am in the Pacific Northwest). It is cold, it snows, the heat in the house is on and I need layers to go outside. I don’t know about you but that is close enough to be called winter to me!
What else does winter call for? Cold weather accessories: hats, gloves, scarves, etc. My daughter doesn’t particularly enjoy having to wear a hat when it is chilly outside but that doesn’t stop her from complaining about the temperature. Ear warmers are the perfect compromise. She keeps her ears warm without having to wear a full hat. Bonus: It is super cute and stylish!

WHAT MATERIALS DO I NEED TO CROCHET EAR WARMERS?
- Worsted weight, #4 yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver Ombre in Violet
- H8/5mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Optional, 2 Stitch Markers
- English Crochet Ear Warmer, Paid Crochet Pattern from Yarn Dreams Designs via Etsy
MATERIAL NOTES:
This crochet pattern calls for any worsted weight yarn so you can use your favorite! I really enjoy using Red Heart Super Saver for mine or Lion Brand Pound of Love, but if you live somewhere very cold and windy, you may want to use a yarn with an animal fiber, like wool or alpaca.
Stitch markers were also recommended but it was to mark the first stitch at the end of each row. I found I did not use the stitch markers since I was able to see the stitch at the end of each row so those are optional in my opinion.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CROCHET EAR WARMERS?
It took me just shy of 2 hours to make the ear warmers. This includes the making of both pieces, stitching sides together and weaving in the ends.
WHAT ARE THE MEASUREMENTS OF THE EAR WARMERS?
My ear warmers measure 19.5 inches in length and 3.25 inches in width. I used the pattern that was for a 22-inch circumference. Once the ear warmers are on and stretched a bit, that is the circumference it reaches. I learned to make things for the head a little smaller than the actual circumference so that it fits snugly once it is stretched on.
The pattern comes with multiple sizes, but it also tells you how to adjust for a totally custom fit.
WHAT IS THE GAUGE FOR EAR WARMERS?
The gauge for the ear warmers is 14 half double crochet for 15 rows to equal a 4-inch square. This is for using the appropriate weight of yarn.
PATTERN NOTES:
This crochet pattern is fantastic, and I love it! The instructions are very clear and there are pictures for every step. It is a simple pattern to do but produces a lovely result of texture and dimension.
I think the ear warmers turned out so elegant-looking and they work up so quickly, so they make a great last minute gift for all those upcoming holiday parties!
