Sunflower Applique 2.0 – Free Crochet Pattern

September 8, 2018

How to crochet an easy, textured sunflower applique perfect for Summer and Fall decorating. The beauty of this applique is that you can use any yarn with respective hook for whatever project you have in mind!

Back when I designed the Sunflower Shawl, I was just bursting with so many other ideas for the Sunflower Applique, but I wanted a more real looking Sunflower with the texture in the center, so I went back to the drawing board, and came up with this Sunflower Applique 2.0 – 2.0 because it’s an improved design.

What Can I Make with a Crocheted Applique?

There are so many possibilities for this Sunflower Applique, here are a few of my ideas:

  • Work in 100% cotton yarn to use as facial scrubbies – the textured center is great for exfoliating!
  • Make several and string up to make a garland for wall decor, mantel, entryway table, etc, or hang as an ornament.
  • Glue to an alligator clip for a cute hair accessory.
  • Sew onto a scarf, afghan, throw pillow, tote bag, etc.
  • Work in thread and hang from earring wires for a cute pair of earrings.
  • Glue to the front of a card.
  • Make several, and glue onto a wreath base like I did for my Sunflower Wreath.

AD-FREE, PRINTER FRIENDLY PDF:

If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through either my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop, LoveCrafts Shop or Ravelry for a small fee. What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Sunflower?

  • Small Amount of Worsted Weight Yarn
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

The original flowers you see in yellow and brown were worked with two strands held together of Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight in the Banana and Chocolate colorways – two strands because this is a lightweight #3 yarn. The pink and yellow flower was made using Red Heart Super Saver.

Work this flower in any weight yarn with respective crochet hook to achieve various sizes.

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Sunflower?

I had one flower worked up in just under 15 minutes.

Measurements from Tip of One Petal to Another:

  • In Baby Bee Sweet Delight: 4″ Wide
  • In Red Heart Super Saver: 4.25″ Wide

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • WS – Wrong Side of Fabric
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • TR – Treble/Triple Crochet
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

In the first round, after joining the ring, instructions state to turn. This is intentional. When the treble crochet’s are worked, they produce a bump on the opposite side of which you are working. I wanted the bumps to come through on the right side, so the turn is there for this to happen. In this case, you will need to hold the tail on top of the ring as you work, as opposed to behind it, so it is not visible from the right side when finished.

Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

Sunflower Applique 2.0 Video Tutorial:

Sunflower Applique 2.0 Written Pattern:

R4: Chain 1. (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) into the next chain 2 space, [slip stitch into the next SC, (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) into the next chain 2 space] 5x. Join to the same spot as the join of Round 3. (6 Petals)

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

I love sunflowers, these are so cute! Sunflowers are always around in August and that is my birthday month, so I’m extra partial to them. 🙂

I haven’t really seen too many sunflowers in person, perhaps that’s why they are one of my favorites [too].

Thanks for the tutorial, and for sharing at Ginx Woolly Linx Party. The bobbly centre of the sunflowers make them perfect. I have saved this in my “Must Give This a Go” folder.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
