Last year, I designed the Sunflower Shawl for Happily Hooked Magazine, which you can now find on the EyeLoveKnots blog for free. In this shawl, I used a basic floral applique pattern that I had actually been sitting on for a couple years, not really knowing what to do with it. Finally, I came up with the shawl, and a few other ways the basic flower pattern could be used, but I wanted a more real looking sunflower with the texture in the center, so I went back to the drawing board, and came up with this Sunflower Applique 2.0 – 2.0 because it is an improved design.
I have a design in mind coming to you soon using these appliques, but if you have an idea in mind you’d like to see, feel free to drop me a line!

Materials:
- Small Amount of Lightweight Yarn or Worsted Weight Yarn – I used two strands of Baby Bee’s Sweet Delight in the Banana and Chocolate colorways
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
Material Notes:
Work this flower in any weight yarn with respective crochet hook to achieve various sizes.
I held two strands of a lightweight #3 yarn together to work up my sunflowers, but you could use one strand of worsted weight yarn as an alternative.
Time Spent:
One flower worked up in just under 15 minutes.
Measurements:
4″ Wide from Tip of One Petal to Another
Abbreviations:
- SC – Single Crochet
- TR – Triple Crochet
- HDC – Half Double Crochet
- DC – Double Crochet
Pattern Notes:
In the first round, after joining the ring, instructions state to turn. This is intentional. When the triple crochet’s are worked, they produce a bump on the opposite side of which you are working. I wanted the bumps to come through on the right side, so the turn is there for this to happen. In this case, you will need to hold the tail on top of the ring as you work, as opposed to behind it, so it is not visible from the right side when finished.
Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
Pattern:
With Brown, chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 1, and turn. (SC into the ring, TR into the ring) 6x. Join. (12 stitches)
R2: Chain 1. (SC, TR) into the 1st stitch, and into the next 11 stitches. Join. (24 stitches)
Fasten off Brown. Join Yellow in any triple crochet.
R3, Petals: In Yellow, chain 1. SC into the 1st stitch, skip the next stitch, (HDC, chain 2, HDC) into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, [SC into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, (HDC, chain 2, HDC) into the next stitch, skip the next stitch] 5x. Join. (6 Petals)
R4: Chain 1. (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) into the next chain 2 space, [slip stitch into the next SC, (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) into the next chain 2 space] 5x. Join to the same spot as the join of Round 3. (6 Petals)
Fasten Off, and Weave in Ends.

I love sunflowers, these are so cute! Sunflowers are always around in August and that is my birthday month, so I’m extra partial to them. 🙂

I haven’t really seen too many sunflowers in person, perhaps that’s why they are one of my favorites [too].
This is just lovely. What a useful little pattern to have in my stash! Thanks . Pinning.
The appliques are lovely. and very useful too, thank you for sharing the pattern at The Really Crafty Link Party this week. Pinned.
Thanks for the tutorial, and for sharing at Ginx Woolly Linx Party. The bobbly centre of the sunflowers make them perfect. I have saved this in my “Must Give This a Go” folder.
