Wrapped in Lace Bridal Garter – Crochet Pattern Review – Kirsten Holloway Designs

December 29, 2019

This is a crochet pattern review by EyeLoveKnots on the Wrapped in Lace Bridal Garter from Kirsten Holloway Designs.

Find my crochet pattern review below, or click here to view the free crochet pattern!

After I got engaged, and started planning things out, I knew that this Wrapped in Lace Garter was going to be the one I used. Ever since it was published, I have been in love with the lightweight look, and lacy design. The ruched elastic is a really pretty touch too (though I didn’t use it myself).

The beautiful trinket dish you see in these photos was a wedding gift from our cousin – Amanda of Revive Pottery. She takes custom orders!

You can also find this Wrapped in Lace Bridal Garter as a featured find in my Weekly Dose of EyeLoveKnots for 07.08.19, which featured wedding finds.

Materials I Used:

  • Small Amount of Aunt Lydia’s #10 Crochet Thread in White
  • 1.7mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Sewing Needle & Thread – my favorite thread is Silamide
  • 1 Yard of 1/4″ White Elastic
  • Safety Pin, Optional
  • Wrapped in Lace Bridal Garter, Free Crochet Pattern from Kirsten Holloway Designs

Material Notes:

The original pattern says 75 yards – I did not weigh out my yarn, but it really is just a small amount. I used leftovers from my wedding dress – check out my Everlasting Wedding Dress.

I used a 1.7mm crochet hook (instead of 1.5mm) because this is what I had in my stash, and I wasn’t worried about the finished sizing because of the added elastic.

Silamide thread is my favorite thread for sewing projects because it is very strong and durable. For a project like this, you would typically thread two pieces into your needle, fold over, and double knot, but with silamide thread, you only need one piece [folded over and double knotted].

The original pattern uses 1/2″ elastic, but after I worked mine, I realized 1/2″ would be too wide, so I went down to the 1/4″ listed.

Time Spent:

Two hours

Sized:

To fit a range – the finished garter is wider than the leg, and when you add in the elastic, it becomes fitted.

Without the final round of picots, my garter (without elastic) measured 2″ Tall by 9.75″ Wide.

Pattern Notes:

This garter is worked from the center out, and then rejoined, and worked outward again for the other side.

The pattern was easy to follow. I had issues with Round 7 – where my picots ended up being in between the fans, as opposed to the top center. I wrote a note to myself for when I made the second one (the one I was going to throw at the reception), “check transition from Round 5 to Round 6, and Round 6 to Round 7 for picot placement”, but I never ended up making a second one, which worked out because our reception was all jumbled up, and we didn’t end up throwing the garter, or the bouquet.

Just keep in mind that the picot should be at the top center of each fan. If it isn’t by following the pattern exactly, just adjust as needed following the given stitch pattern.

To help me weave my elastic in, I poked a safety pin through one end, and used it as a guide for weaving.

When you overlap the elastic, the most secure way to sew it closed is to create a rectangle box with an “X” through it.

Your crocheting is gorgeous! I love working with crocheted lace. I used to crochet trims for bedsheets and pillow cases.

Thank you, Mary! I am interested in trimming some pillow cases (and tea towels). I think it would be fun!

It’s beautiful and the pattern would look good to use as an applique (for towels, for example). Thank you for sharing at The Really Crafty Link Party. Pinned!

There were many things I said “I wish I would have known this for so-and-sos wedding”. But now I know for the future. I had a lot of fun putting everything together.

I tried to DIY everything for my wedding – to save money, and be unique. I had this pattern in my mind for a long time – since she first published it. She designs beautiful things.

This isn’t my design – I reviewed it. What specifically are you struggling with on Round 6? Maybe I can help, or you can reach out to Kirsten, the designer.
