Twisted Through the Window Earwarmer – Free Crochet Pattern in 4 Sizes

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet a trendy twisted earwarmer using the Through the Window stitch pattern. This is a fun, quick crochet pattern that uses the mosaic crochet technique. Don’t let it scare you! It’s comprised of simple single crochet stitches, chains and easy double crochets. 4 sizes included.

I almost always have my hair in a bun, so my go-to cold weather accessory is a cozy earwarmer. Messy buns do make an appearance as well.

Last week, I shared a basic version of this earwarmer worked in the round – Through the Window Earwarmer, but I wanted to try my hand at the trendy twisted earwarmer, and now I’m wondering why I waited so long to try it!

The idea of mosaic crochet may intimidate you, but please don’t let it. This scarf is comprised of single crochets and chains with some double crochets to create the overlap. I think a confident beginner could do this. Make sure to check the pattern notes for a photo that breaks the pattern down just a bit, and should ease your fear.

My red and black nails are (affiliate link) Bloody Gorgeous from Color Street (I’m a stylist!). The polish for the glitter nails has been retired – it was Glitzburgh, also from Color Street.

While my favorite way to work this technique is with a variegated color underneath, and a solid coordinating color on top, I thought I’d try a pretty popular color combination for Fall and Winter – light brown and black. There are so many possibilities, even completely solid!

Materials:

• Small Amount of Worsted Weight Yarn (For the adult small, I used 80 yards in total of Red Heart Super Saver in Buff and Black).
• I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
• Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives: Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice or Heartland, Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn, Red Heart’s Soft, Bernat’s Super Value and Premier Yarns Everyday Soft.

If you have concerns about using Red Heart Super Saver and similar because of the roughness and stiffness of the fabric, I have a couple tips!

• If the yarn is too rough for your hands to crochet with, remove the skein wrapper, place the skein into a mesh lingerie bag (I bought mine at JoAnn’s), then machine wash it by itself on the gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. Once it’s finished, toss it into the dryer on low heat – you may need to run it through 2 – 3 times to get the center dry.
• To add softness and better drape to the finished piece, crochet in it’s entirety and weave in the ends, then wash and dry in the same manner (without the lingerie bag) or simply dry once with a dryer sheet.

Time Spent:

For the adult small size, I had my earwarmer ready in just under an hour.

Measurements:

• Toddler: 3.38″ (that’s 3 3/8″) Tall by 9″ Wide to fit a head circumference of 18 – 20″
• Child: 4.13″ (that’s 4 1/8″) Tall by 9.63″ (or 9 5/8″) Wide to fit a head circumference of 20 – 22″
• Teen/Adult Small: 4.13″ (that’s 4 1/8″) Tall by 9.63″ (or 9 5/8″) Wide to fit a head circumference of 20 – 22″
• Adult Large: 4.13″ (that’s 4 1/8″) Tall by 10.75″ (or 10 3/4″) Wide to fit a head circumference of 22 – 23″

Gauge:

• 14 DC = 4″ Wide; 7 Rows = 4″
• In Pattern, one repeat (2 DC, 2 SC) = 1 1/16″ Wide (or 1.06″)

Abbreviations (US):

• YO – Yarn Over
• FSC – Foundation Single Crochet
• How to FSC: Chain 2. Insert hook into the first chain, yo, pull through, yo, pull through first loop (to create foundation chain), yo, pull through two loops on hook. First chain and SC created. Looking at the stitch in your hand, you should see the top of the SC to the right, and parallel on the left side, it should look like the opposite side of the beginning foundation chain. You will be working in these stitches on the left. To create the next stitch and each stitch after, insert hook under both loops of the foundation chain (left side) yo, and pull through, yo, pull through first loop, yo, pull through 2 remaining loops.
• SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
• DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

A foundation single crochet (or FSC) is recommended for beginning as a beginning chain can limit the amount of stretch on a finished project, and here we don’t want that earwarmer to feel too tight or restrictive. Alternatively, you can use one size larger crochet hook, and work a beginning chain of the number of stitches, then slip stitch join. Switch to correct crochet hook, and work a round of single crochet (the larger hook is to add more flexibility).

The beginning chains do not count as a stitch.

In the pattern, I will instruct for example, in Round 5 of the Adult Small size “DC into R3”. In the photo above, you can see how there is a skipped stitch in white, and two rows of chains above it. You will push those chains to the back, and work the double crochet just into that skipped stitch in white.

Stitch multiple is 4 + 2.

To change yarn colors, do so in the last yarn over of the previous row. If needed, see my How to Change Yarn Colors in Crochet tutorial. Drop old color to the back, and carry up on the side. When you sew it closed, it will cover up the carried yarn.

This is what the back of this stitch pattern looks like. There aren’t any floats throughout the pattern other than the yarn that will be carried up the side.

Pattern:

In Buff, chain 2, then FSC 70 (78, 78, 82). [70 (78, 78, 82) SC]

R2: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. Switch to Black. [70 (78, 78, 82) SC]

R3: In Black, chain 1 and turn. SC into the 1st 2 SC, (chain 2, skip the next 2 SC, SC into each of the next 2 SC) 17x (19x, 19x, 20x). [36 (40, 40, 42) SC]

R4: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st 2 SC, (chain 2, SC into each of the next 2 SC) 17x (19x, 19x, 20x). Switch to Buff. [36 (40, 40, 42) SC]

R5: In Buff, chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st 2 SC, DC into each of the 2 open stitches from R3, (SC into each of the next 2 SC, DC into each of the next 2 stitches of R3) 17x (19x, 19x, 20x). [36 (40, 40, 42) SC]

R6: Chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st stitch, and each stitch around. [70 (78, 78, 82) SC]

R7 – 14 (18, 18, 18): Repeat Rows 3 – 6.

Fasten off with longer end for sewing if sewing closed OR pull up loop so it doesn’t fall out if slip stitching closed, and weave in other 3 ends.

How to Assemble:

Lay your fabric so the right side is facing you.

Fold both ends in half hot dog style – right side is inside the fold.

Bring the ends into each other…

… so they are completely intertwined.

Option 1 – Slip Stitch With Hook

Reinsert hook into the last loop, pull to normal tension and chain 1. Insert hook through all four layers, and complete a slip stitch.

Slip stitch across making sure to catch all 4 layers each time. Fasten off, and weave in end, then turn earwarmer out to right side.

Option 2 – Sewing Closed

Thread long tail into a tapestry needle.

Insert needle through all 4 layers of 1st stitch.

Take needle down in the opposite direction making sure to work through all 4 layers.

Take needle down in the opposite direction. Continue alternating directions with each stitch across. Weave in end after last stitch, then turn earwarmer out to right side.
