Volume One Afghan Square – Free Crochet Pattern | Stitch Sampler Afghan Square

February 16, 2023

This is a free crochet pattern and video tutorial showing how to crochet the Volume One Afghan Square, which is fun, textured afghan square that combines 6 stitch patterns.

Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.

This post contains affiliate links for WeCrochet and Lion Brand Yarns. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

What is Volume One? Well, I’ve published these three eBooks: Soap Cozy or Small Gift Bag Volume 1, Let’s Crochet Some Washcloths Volume 1 and Let’s Crochet Some Scarves Volume 1. Each of them feature the same 6 stitch patterns, and I thought it would be fun to combine all 6 of those in one design.

My Volume One Hand Towel was the test run, and I love it so much, especially in one solid color.

I’ve joined The Unraveled Mitten, and 17 other crochet designers in the 2023 Stash Busting Crochet Along, and I’m so excited to be a part of it! Every other week, a new 12″ afghan square design will be released by a different designer, and in the end, there will be 20 different afghan squares to sew together to create a one of a kind afghan. Get more details, and get all the links to the squares as they’re released by visiting with The Unraveled Mitten!

If you aren’t interested in making an afghan, you could always turn them into throw pillows or add a strap and you have a tote bag! Sew 4-5 in a rectangle, and use as a shawl. Use as the star of the show in a sweater, and build around it, or work in a super bulky yarn, and use as an accent rug – so many great options!

Materials:

  • 160 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Red Heart Super Saver
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

For this square, I used the Aran colorway.

For this square, I used 15 yards of Shocking Pink, 22 yards of Bright Yellow, 19 yards of Tea Leaf, 19 yards of Pumpkin, 26 yards of Turqua, 19 yards of Spring Green and 33 yards of White.

For this square, I used 15 yards of Spring Green, 22 yards of Pool, 19 yards of Carrot, 19 yards of Cherry Red, 26 yards of Gold, 19 yards of Bright Yellow and 33 yards of Buff.

Some great yarn alternatives I recommend are {wools} WeCrochet Swish, Lion Brand Wool Ease, {non-wool} WeCrochet Brava.

Time Spent:

I had my square ready to go in just under 1 hour, 45 minutes.

Measurements:

12″ Square

Gauge:

In Pattern, at the end of Row 4 = 11.13″ (11 1/8″) Wide by 1.88″ (1 7/8″) Tall

Gauge is not essential unless the finished size of the square is to you.

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • TR – Treble Crochet [yarn over twice, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull through, (yarn over, and pull through 2 loops) 3x]
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • BPDC – Back Post Double Crochet
  • FPDC – Front Post Double Crochet
  • SC2tog – Single Crochet Two Stitches Together to Decrease

Pattern Notes:

There are several stitch multiples to make this design happen. I started with a stitch multiple of 3, and it gave me an odd number, which is exactly what I needed for the Little Pebbles stitch pattern. I then adjusted the stitch pattern to work with the Grace Tinley aka Granny Stitch pattern, and then adjusted the repeat pattern to work evenly for both the Octavia and Bobblish stitch patterns based on the stitch count that I had. So if you’re wondering how to make this larger or smaller, my honest answer is: take it one step at a time, and have patience as you’ll most likely need to adjust along the way.

None of the names given to the stitch patterns are official, except for Suzette – they are the names I’ve given my designs.

Beginning chain 1 does not count as a stitch, but beginning chain 2 does.

I tried to get the free pattern using the Code and it is not too late but it wants to charge me half price.

This would mean you’re using the incorrect code – there are two.

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
