Chicken [Butt] Coasters – Free Crochet Pattern

March 11, 2018

You may remember back in April of last year (2017), I shared a little blurb about my Chicken Coasters that were featured in Happily Hooked Magazines Issue 36. Now, I am able to share this pattern with you, and I thought, what better time than Spring time, especially with Easter right around the corner? These coasters were be perfect on the table at an Easter gathering, or any Spring party. You could even work them up in fun, bright colors.

Originally, I made this along with a hen coaster as a birthday gift for my boyfriend’s mom. I settled on the hen coasters, which you’ll see here soon! My inspiration for these Chicken Coasters were my Cat Face Coasters, but after working up one, everyone laughed at them saying they looked like a chicken’s butt. I wanted to put a beak on the front, but it was a little too bulky so I guess they could pass as a chicken’s butt, and that’s why I added that into the name.

*If you would like a PDF version of this post, you may get one through my EyeLoveKnots Etsy Shop or EyeLoveKnots Craftsy Shop for a small fee. This fee is to compensate for the view/s lost once you no longer need to return to the blog for the information, as you will have your own copy. Plus! It helps fund supplies for new projects to share with you!
Shop EyeLoveKnots Etsy – Chicken [Butt] Coasters;
or EyeLoveKnots Craftsy – Chicken [Butt] Coasters.

Materials:
     – 35 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn Each Coaster – I used Lily Sugar n Cream (affiliate link) in Ecru [Cream], Red, and Yellow
     – I9/5.5mm Crochet Hook
     – Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
     – Optional: Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:
Cotton yarn can sometimes be difficult to pull a tapestry needle though. I like to use a pair of jewelry pliers to act as my fingers in pulling the needle through. Be careful not to pull to hard and break your needle.

Time Spent:
I worked up one coaster in just under half an hour.

Measurements:
     5.5″ Wide by 6″ Tall

Gauge:
     15 DC by 7 Rows = 4″ by 3.75″

Abbreviations:
     HDC – Half Double Crochet
     SC – Single Crochet

Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain does not count towards final stitch count.

Join to the first stitch, not the beginning chain.

Crown is worked with split first and last stitches to help maintain a straight seam.

In Round 5, work over Ecru throughout color change.

For a more seamless color change, I like to work the last stitch of the color as normal, then pull my new color through, and pull the initial color tight.

If you want more space in between your chicken’s feet, you can change the seven single crochets after and before the comb to six each, and then add an extra two single crochet in between the feet.

Pattern:
Chain 5. Join to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 10 HDC into the ring. Join. (10 HDC)

R2: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st HDC, 2 HDC into each of the next 9 HDC, HDC into the 1st HDC. (20 HDC)

R3: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st 2 HDC, (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into the next HDC) 9x, HDC into the 1st HDC. (30 HDC)

R4: Chain 1. HDC into the 1st 3 HDC, (2 HDC into the next HDC, HDC into the next 2 HDC) 9x, HDC into the 1st HDC. (40 HDC)

R5: With Red, chain 5. Slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 7, slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 5, slip stitch into the same stitch – switch to Ecru, SC into the next 7 HDC, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 5, slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 7, slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 5, slip stitch into the same stitch, SC into the next 7 HDC – switch to Yellow, chain 6, slip stitch into the 4th chain from the hook, chain 4, slip stitch into the 4th chain, chain 4, slip stitch into the 4th chain and the remaining 2 chains, slip stitch into the initial stitch, SC into the next 2 HDC, slip stitch in the next HDC, chain 6, slip stitch into the 4th chain from the hook, chain 4, slip stitch into the 4th chain and the remaining 2 chains, slip stitch into the initial stitch – switch to Ecru, SC into the next 7 HDC, slip stitch into the next HDC, chain 5, slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 7, slip stitch into the same stitch, slip stitch into the next stitch, chain 5, slip stitch into the same stitch, SC into the last 7 HDC. Thanks! I had a lot of fun working them up, though I did not intend on the "butt" part at first. Lucky accident I guess. Hehe

My comments are set so I can approve them – unfortunately there are lots of spam comments, and I don’t want these to be out there to be accidentally clicked on.
Had to Google a Tortoise Shell Cat real quick – WOW! They are beautiful! Growing up, at my second home, we had a cat that look like this. We named her Reese. Hehe.

I just finished a set of cute cat coasters using the Lily Sugar and cream in the pink Camo. All they need are the whiskers. My daughter will love them. Chicken Butt Coasters may be the next pattern. Will post photos on your FB page.

Sorry for the delay! At this time, I don’t, but my YouTube channel is fairly new, and I’m working on getting videos for older projects so I will put this one my list.
