Before I begin, I wanted to point out that I am trying something a little different with the photos. Usually, you see the photos on my mannequin, but I really would like to try and get more photos of the items being worn. I know the lighting is a little poor in these photos, but I don’t do well with other people taking my picture. What do you think of the photos? Do you prefer seeing the finished piece on a mannequin or flat lay, or worn?
Well, welcome to the October Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen!
Since I first laid eyes on the La Vie en Rose Wrap from the current Crochet! Winter 2019 Issue, I was really looking forward to working it up with yarn from my stash. You’ll find this wrap pinned to my Beauty: Hats, Scarves, Wraps, Shawls pin board.
The simple, repetitive pattern is a wonderful break from more complicated patterns and my personal designs. Sometimes I really just love being able to sit, and crochet, (and watch Netflix) with a simple pattern. The stitch pattern from this wrap is so easy to follow, and memorize.
Now, a simple pattern doesn’t mean it can’t be a beautiful piece! The stitch pattern for this wrap is different from most projects you see out there, and it’s a really pretty, lacy stitch. Worked in a lighter yarn or even a cotton blend, I think this would be perfect for Spring or Summer crocheting.
I have been trying really hard to be good, and use up the yarn that I have in my stash, and not buy extra yarn (easier said than done!). I dug through to see what I had a couple skeins in, and I found this Dark Olive colorway you see.
Now, I did make my wrap much smaller in length than the original pattern, and that wasn’t because I ran out of yarn (because I have two more skeins of this colorway), but I simply just wanted a shorter piece to use as an oversized scarf/cowl. Add one more skein, and the piece will come out to about 71.25″ in length.
Grab a copy of this issue, and continue on to the Pattern Notes section to see the adjustments I made to my wrap!
Materials I Used:
- 710 Yards (or 2 skeins) of Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in the Dark Olive colorway
- G6/4mm Crochet Hook (Smaller than recommended)
- #18 Tapestry Needle
- La Vie en Rose Wrap from Crochet! Winter 2019 (Paid Crochet Pattern)
Material Notes:
Original wrap used ZZ Twist Yarn, but I just used yarn out of my stash. Really, any worsted weight yarn would work great for it. For a warmer option, consider Berroco’s Vintage Yarn or Lion Brand’s Wool Ease (both contain wool) or for a cooler option, consider Berroco’s Modern Cotton (cotton blend).
Time Spent:
I worked my piece up in a few seatings for a total of about 7 hours. 45 minutes.
Measurements:
Mine: 16.5″ Wide by 47.5″ in Length
Original Pattern: 18″ by 60″ (excluding fringe)
The original wrap is larger than mine, and includes pockets and fringe (which I did not include), so it requires 1,230 Yards of worsted weight yarn.
Gauge:
4 DC by 2 Rows = 1″ [OR 16 DC by 8 Rows = 4″]
I did meet gauge with the G6/4mm crochet hook, but my wrap still came out more narrow than the original pattern. Gauge really isn’t essential for this piece.
Pattern Notes:
I tried to work the pattern as written, but after working several rows, I found that the fabric was just not straightening out. It was bunching, and curving from the foundation chain and row one. I tried go up a hook size (and even two!), but it really wasn’t working, so I ended up modifying the first few rows, and I really like how it turned out.
My modification was simply to work the foundation chain as written, and then three rows of double crochet – three rows to equal the same height as the width of the double crochets along both sides of the wrap.
To follow the modification I made in the beginning, I had to alter the ending to match, which was simply three rows of double crochet, but I just want to explain how I worked the first row (which for me was Row 103) over the lacy stitch pattern – this row evens out the fabric for the remaining two rows.
Row 103: Chain 2, turn. DC into the next 6 stitches, 2 DC into the chain space, DC into the next SC, (HDC into the next stitch, SC into each of the next 3 stitches, HDC into the next stitch which is the center of the picot) 7x, HDC into the next stitch, SC into each of the next 3 stitches, HDC into the next stitch, DC into the next SC, 2 DC into the next chain space, DC into the last 7 stitches. (67 stitches)
The pattern includes instructions for making pockets, and adding fringe, but I omitted these to get the look I wanted.
I really like the use of picots throughout the pattern. In places where I feel like typically a simple chain space or v-stitch would be used, in this pattern, a picot is used instead, and I thought that was pretty neat, and unique, plus it really blends in quite nicely with the shells, which kind of just makes them look longer.
Want to up this wrap a little more? Along both sides, to the inside of the double crochet edge, is a vertical row of eyelets. You could easily weave a ribbon through there, or even a simple crocheted chain. I think this would be a really fun embellishment.
Want a cowl/infinity scarf instead? Simply sew the two ends together with your preferred method, and there you go! OR add buttons to one side that the double crochets from the other side fit into, and then you can change up how you wear it.
And that’s it! I enjoyed working up this pattern, love how the wrap turned out, and I was able to use up two skeins from my stash.
Throw it over your shoulder.
Or wear it like a traditional scarf.

What a pretty piece. I love seeing the piece with you modeling it as it gives me an idea of size. And I like the close up of the flat lay as I get to see the stitching. If I had to choose one way, I would pick the flat lay.
Alexandra says
I will keep this in mind! I am not the greatest photographer, so I have been practicing more, and I like the flat lay challenge.

Thanks, Jess! I actually got the idea from you for the green. Not too long ago you posted about Fall trends, and one of the things you mentioned was green. It really stuck with me, so when I saw all this green yarn in my stash, I had to use it for this!
