One of my nieces is absolutely obsessed with ducks, so I am always on the lookout for cute, easy duck patterns. When I first came across the Snow the Duck pattern by EmyToys, I knew I had to snatch it up to make some to surprise her! I don’t know if it was the cute eyes or the adorable little headband that attracted me to this pattern more, but either way, it really was a necessary purchase.
The Snow the Duck pattern is a relatively easy, almost no-sew pattern that works up quickly. It can be made with varying weights of yarn for differing sizes of ducks, and the finished product is absolutely adorable. The pattern features an optional headband that raises the level of cuteness for this little squishy duck to new levels. If you are in spring market-prep mode or just want to make one of these for a duck-lover that you know, I would highly recommend you try out this pattern.
Materials I Used:
- Large Ducks
- Bernat Blanket Yarn in the colors Whipped Cream (white duck body) and Sunsoaked (white duck feet and beak)

- Crafter’s Secret Big Idea in Pearl Fleck (white duck headband)
- Bernat Velvet in Indigo (yellow duck headband)

- 15 mm Black Felt Eyes
- Small Duck

- Snow the Duck, paid crochet pattern by EmyToys via Etsy
Material Notes:
The Snow the Duck crochet pattern was made by the designer using Himalaya Dolphin Baby yarn, but notes are included in the pattern that says any yarn can be used as a substitute. I used Bernat Blanket yarn in two different color combinations and Premier Just Chenille yarn to create two different sizes of ducks. The pattern suggests a G6/4mm crochet hook for the chenille yarn. I used that size hook for my smaller duck. For the larger ducks made with blanket yarn, I opted for a K10.5/6.5mm hook.
The directions for the headband indicate that you should use sport weight yarn with a 2mm hook. I didn’t have any sport weight, so I just used a variety of worsted weight yarn with a smaller hook (3mm). All of my headbands turned out fine using worsted weight yarn. For the small duck, the headband is a little looser, but I think it still worked fine.
In addition to yarn and hooks, you will also need some stuffing. Only the body and the head of the duck require stuffing, so it doesn’t use a ton of stuffing. You will also need eyes and black yarn for embellishments. I chose to use black felt eyes, but the pattern calls for safety eyes. If you opt to use safety eyes, there are directions in the pattern for how to place the eyes correctly.
Time Spent:
The body of this duck works up relatively quickly, but there are some extra details for the perfect finished piece. It took me about 1.5 hours to crochet the duck’s body and beak, plus about an extra thirty minutes for adding the headband and embellishments. In total, I averaged about two hours per duck.
Measurements:
The small duck made with Premier Just Chenille measures about 4 1/2 inches tall and 4 inches wide.
The large duck made with Bernat Blanket Yarn measures about 8 1/2 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches wide.
Gauge:
When making the larger ducks, I used a K10.5/6.5mm hook with blanket yarn. A magic circle with 6 single crochets measured approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter.
When making the smaller duck, I used a G6/4mm hook with velvet yarn. A magic circle with 6 single crochets measured approximately 3/4 inch in diameter.
Gauge is not critical in this type of project. You mainly just want to make sure that there are not gaps between stitches so that the stuffing does not come through. If you notice gaps, you will want to go down a hook size.
Pattern Notes:
The Snow the Duck crochet pattern by EmyToys is a really fun pattern to work up. The pattern starts with making the wings and the beak first so that they can be added to the body later. While the beak can wait until the end, it is important that you make the wings before starting in on the body as they get crocheted into the body as it is made.
To be able to crochet this pattern, you will need to make sure you have knowledge of working on both sides of a chain, working in the round, increasing, decreasing, single crocheting, creating bobble stitches, and single crocheting three stitches together. I would classify this as an advanced beginner pattern. The pattern does include video tutorials for some of the trickier parts of the pattern.
While I am normally not a fan of color changes, the color change for the feet of the duck was really simple. The use of a larger stitch at this point made for a really simple way of adding feet while keeping the body no-sew. The rest of the body is really easy to work up. I really enjoyed the tail bump on the back of the duck! I was also really impressed that all three of my ducks had the wing placement work out perfectly. Normally I have to adjust placement depending on the size of my stitches, but even with different weights of yarn, the pattern worked perfectly for placing the wings on the ducks.
I love all the details in this pattern. There are specific directions on how to shape the face around the eyes that really create such an adorable little face on these ducks. I definitely recommend taking the steps to do the facial shaping – it makes a huge difference! I also really enjoy the features around the eyes. I normally add eyebrows to my stuffed toys, but the eyelashes were a great additional touch!
Overall, I love how this pattern turned out! It was relatively easy and made a super adorable product. I can’t wait to make more of these for my upcoming markets (and probably a few more for my niece)!
