This is a free crochet pattern and video tutorial showing how to crochet my Remi Soap Cozy (or Small Gift Bag), a fun ripple crochet pattern worked in two colors perfect for pampering yourself, or gifting with a handmade bar of soap or facial scrubbies, a favor/candy pouch, or a small gift bag with a new pair of earrings.

Crochet soap cozies are one of my favorite things to make. Currently, I have 9 free crochet patterns for them, and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon! There are also a few premium ones that haven’t been shared on the blog yet, but are available in my Soap Cozies or Small Gift Bags, Volume 1 eBook.
This adorable little bag can be used in a variety of ways:

My favorite way is as a soap cozy. Stick a bar of soap in the pouch, and use it in place of a loofah. The cotton yarn is great for exfoliating, and the soap cozy will extend the life of your bar of soap. Check out this Daisy Homemade Goat Milk Soap from CarolinaOrganicsSC for $10 (08.06.22).

It also makes a great gift bag for things like a homemade bar of soap, facial scrubbies or even a pair of earrings with small box and all – I like these Pressed Daisy Teardrop Earrings from CharlotteHazelCo for $17.95+ (08.06.22).

Lastly, these are great favor/candy pouches. Great for students, teachers and co-workers, or fill with candy and hand out at a party, like a Bridal or Baby Shower, or even a wedding. Check out these Thank You for Being Sweet Printable Tags from CelebratelyInvites for $4.99 (08.06.22).

There are two versions of this bag. I originally designed and worked a candy corn version of this bag in Lily Sugar n Cream Yarn. I later went back, and reworked the design using WeCrochet Dishie Yarn and only two colors. Dishie is slightly thinner, so I altered the pattern to achieve the same size in this other yarn. It’s possible to get the same size following the original pattern with a I9/5.5mm hook, but I don’t like using this size with Dishie so that’s why I altered instead.
My Remi series features fun ripple patterns worked mainly in Double Crochet stitches – there are some other stitches that help form the shape for the ripple pattern.

What Do I Need to Crochet a Soap Cozy?
- About 65 Yards of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie; 20 Yards of Bumblebee, 32 Yards of Azure and 13 Yards of White
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers (I never need for Dishie, but always for Lily Sugar n Cream)
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: Lion Brand Re-Up, Lily Sugar n Cream (it will most likely finish larger unless you go down a hook size)
Other Recommended Yarns (with I9/5.5mm Hook): Red Heart’s Super Saver, Caron’s One Pound, Bernat’s Super Value
Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.
How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Soap Cozy?
I had my cozy ready in about 45 minutes.
Measurements:
In Dishie Yarn: 4.5″ (or 4 1/2″) Wide by 5.75″ (or 5 3/4″) Tall; 16″ Long Tie
In Lily Sugar n Cream: 4.5″ (or 4 1/2″) Wide by 5.63″ (or 5 5/8″) Tall
Gauge:
Round 1 In Pattern with Dishie & H8/5mm Hook: 4″ Long by 1.13″ (or 1 1/8″) Wide
With Lily Sugar n Cream & H8/5mm Hook: 16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4″
ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- TR – Treble Crochet (sometimes called a Triple Crochet)
- dc3tog – Double Crochet Three Stitches Together (Decrease)
- To dc3tog: Yarn over, insert hook into the first stitch of the decrease, yarn over and pull through (3 loops), yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through (4 loops), yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through (5 loops), yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.
Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch, except in the body of the bag, where it counts as a double crochet.
Join to the beginning chain for all rounds, except the first two and last two, in which you’ll join to the first stitch of the round.
The way I work my color change for a seamless change while carrying up the yarn: I work all the way around up to the join. I insert my hook into the stitch to be joined to, but before completing the slip stitch, I tighten the other color/s tail, then pull it/them up and over my hook so it will be in a better position to switch to, then I complete my slip stitch with my current color. To complete the color change, I pull the new color through the loop on my hook, pull the previous color tight so it disappears and drop it. Now I’m ready to work with my new color.
Alternatively, you can fasten off at the end of each round, work an invisible join for a seamless color change, and join your new color into the first stitch, but this will create many ends to weave in. OR, you could work all of the cozy in a solid color and not have to worry about color changes. Just join to the first stitch at the end of the round, and begin again.

In this image, you’ll see my seam from the inside on the left, and from the outside on the right.
