A couple years ago, my work hosted a coffee truck for teacher appreciation week, and I had one of the best energizers I have ever had! Since then, I have been following them on social media and stop by their location whenever I can. A couple weeks ago, this wonderful coffee truck opened a coffee cottage only about ten minutes away from me!
I love supporting and cheering on other small businesses, so I wanted to make a cute gift to give to the owner as a congratulations for opening their new location. When I searched coffee patterns, I found this adorable Espressive Coffee Cup pattern by Lil’Rugratz Crochet. Not only is the pattern super adorable, but it comes with printable sayings for all sorts of occasions, which makes it a great pattern to have on hand for gift-giving!
I think this pattern is going to end up being a best seller at my upcoming fall markets! After I deliver the first of my coffee cups to my small business friend, I will be making these little cuties on repeat! These would make great gifts for the coffee lovers in your life! You could also make them into super cute key chains.

Material Notes:
The original pattern was made using Bernat Blanket yarn. The designer used a slightly darker color for the lighter part of the coffee cup – the colorway Sand instead of the Almond colorway I used. For the lid of the coffee cup, the designer used White, while I chose to use Vintage White.
I wanted to try to see what the coffee cup would look like in a smaller size, so I also made the pattern using Ella Rae Cuddle yarn. This yarn is more of a velvet feeling and works up really similarly to Premier Parfait Chunky.
Both patterns require a very small amount of stuffing to make, so you can easily make this project from your stash as long as you have a little bag of stuffing laying around.
For the eyes, I chose to use felt eyes for my larger coffee cup since it’s more of a toy size and I want it to be safe for kids. For the smaller coffee cup, I imagine it being more of a desk-sitter, so I used safety eyes and will put a warning with it not to be around small children.
To make the smile on the coffee cup, you will want to make sure you have a thinner weight of black yarn. I used worsted weight, but you could also use several strands of crochet thread or embroidery floss.
The pattern includes printable sayings to attach to the coffee cup, making it “Espressive.” You will need a printer and card stock. I also chose to laminate mine for extra durability. I then used a glue gun to attach the saying to the coffee cup.
The smaller size coffee cup would make a great key chain if you want to use it as one!
How Long Does it Take to Crochet an Espressive Coffee Cup?
This is a super quick pattern! I was able to make both of my finished pieces in less than 45 minutes. I chose to use option 1 in the pattern for a cleaner look, but it took slightly longer than if I chose to use option 2. If you are making a bunch of these and want to save time, I would recommend considering option 2 to shave a few minutes off the time it takes.
How Big is an Espressive Coffee Cup?
I made two different coffee cups in different weights of yarn.
For the larger cup, I used Bernat Blanket yarn with a J10.5/6.5 mm hook, and the finished coffee cup measured approximately 5 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide.
For the smaller cup, I used Ella Rae Cuddle yarn with a G6/4 mm hook, and the finished coffee cup measured approximately 3 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches wide.

Gauge:
Gauge is not provided in this pattern and is not critical for making stuffed toys like this. You mainly want to make sure that your hook size is appropriate for your yarn and that your stitches are tight enough together so that your stuffing doesn’t come out through holes between the stitches.
If you want your coffee cup to come out to be the same size as mine, using super bulky weight 6 yarn (Bernat Blanket) and a J10.5/6.5 mm crochet hook, a magic circle with 8 single crochets should measure approximately 1 1/4 inches in diameter. Using super bulky weight 6 yarn (Ella Rae Cuddle) and a G6/4 mm crochet hook, a magic circle with 8 single crochets should measure approximately 7/8 inch in diameter.

All About Making the Espressive Coffee Cups:
The Espressive Coffee Cup is a really quick and easy pattern to make up! While there are some color changes and a few no-sew techniques that can present a beginner with a challenge, the photos make it really reader-friendly.
I really enjoyed the fact that this pattern was completely no-sew. I anticipated that the arms were to be attached at the end, but they are made right with the rest of the pattern. The color changes in this pattern were really easy, as they happen for full rounds instead of in the middle of rounds.
I found the method for making the lid of the coffee cup really interesting, and even learned a new technique! The designer provides two options for switching colors from the top of the cup to the lid. One option makes for a really clean line. While this option is a little different and takes a little longer to complete, I think that it was totally worth the extra time for the clean finish. If you are a newer crocheter or are just in a hurry, the designer provides a second option for the color change to the lid that is a little less clean, but much easier and faster.
I am super happy with how cute these little coffee cups turned out, and I really do expect them to be great sellers at my next market. I think it would be super fun to make them in a bunch of different color combinations and play around with their little signs. I hope you decide to make one too!
