Ashton Gansey Scarf – Crochet Pattern Hack

January 4, 2020

This is a crochet pattern review on the Ashton Gansey Stole by Lena Skvagerson from the Fall 2019 Collection of Annie’s Signature Designs.

This post contains affiliate links for Annie’s Catalog, and Lion Brand. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

When Annie’s shared their Fall 2019 Fashion Collection, I fell in love with the Ashton Gansey Stole.

I have admired cables for a long time, and even designed the Chunky Cabled Cozy (Free Crochet Pattern) – partially inspired by the Cable Twist Hat (Crochet Pattern Review of a Free Pattern), but when looking at the stole, that big, gorgeous braided cable really caught my attention.

I hadn’t tried a cable like that prior to this project, and that intimidated me a little, but I was so excited to give this pattern a try! Annie’s was kind enough to send me the pattern for free, in exchange for sharing it, and this review with you.

Materials I Used:

  • About 788 Yards (just under 4 skeins) of Lion Brand’s Wool Ease in the Rose Heather colorway
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • #18 Tapestry Needle
  • Ashton Gansey Stole, Paid Crochet Pattern from Annie’s Catalog

Material Notes:

The original pattern uses a lightweight yarn – Universal Yarn Uptown DK, and a J10/6mm crochet hook.

I first attempted to work the stole as written with Yarn Bee’s Must Be Merino DK. I was really excited when I first found this yarn, and in a gorgeous dark teal colorway because merino, acrylic and nylon is a delightful fiber combination, and I was pleased with the price and variety of colors, but nearly one skein in with a newly purchased terracotta color, and I was finding that the fabric was looking almost felted. Really, it looked icky, and that was only from being taken in and out of my WIP bag – major turn off. I bagged all the yarn I had bought, and donated it, then went yarn hunting.

At my local JoAnn’s, I fell in love with the Rose Heather colorway from the Wool Ease line (one of my favorites), and decided I would modify the pattern to make it work using a worsted weight yarn. More on that in a minute! But I will add that I paired it with an H8/5mm crochet hook, which was smaller than recommended, but a hook size I was more comfortable using with this yarn.

Time Spent:

8 hours, 45 minutes

Measurements:

Mine: 7″ Wide by 60″ Long

Original: 15.5″ Wide by 78″ Long

I did not take gauge either time because as a stole/scarf, gauge is not essential.

Pattern Notes:

To make this stole into the scarf I ended up with was super easy! I simply started with a beginning chain of 37 (for 36 single crochets in the first row), and then followed the pattern working one repeat instead of two. See, super easy to customize the width!

Seeing that with one repeat, my scarf came to be 7″ wide, had I gone up a hook size, and worked the pattern as written, it would have been about the size of the original pattern.

I worked my scarf until I reached 60″ in length, making sure to include the finishing row, but you could just continue working until you’ve ran out of yarn (keeping that finishing row in mind for the look). OR if working for a man, I would suggest 70″ in length (which probably would require a fifth skein of yarn).

The pattern itself was really easy to follow, and memorize.

I have worked cables before, but this was my first time working one like the main center one. It’s sides slant in opposite directions to create a braided look. During my first attempt, I did mess up the cable rows of the first two repeats working as I was used to rather than as written, which made the slants go in the same direction, and definitely not look right. During the third repeat, I caught what I was doing wrong, fixed it, and the rest was smooth sailing.

So pretty, Alexandra! At first glance, I thought it was knit. Showing my daughter this one to hint that her Mama needs one. 😉 Pinned

I think it’s really cool that crochet can mimic the knit look.

Thank you, Jess! I knew the pink color would be perfect for Winter, and that I definitely needed to find me a nice, gray top to go with it. Came out just as I envisioned, and I am so happy.

What a great scarf! You did a wonderful job with it and it’s a really nice colour too, even if it wasn’t the thread or colour you had in mind at first!

Hope that you had a great weekend 🙂 Thanks so much for joining the #WeekdayWearLinkup! A new link up is live on my blog now, I’d love you to join again.

The scarf is wonderful. I haven’t done anything with cables…yet, but I need to! So many things I won’t get accomplished this year, but hey, there’s always next year.
