Watermelon Slice Applique – Free Crochet Pattern

July 20, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet a Watermelon Applique. So easy to change up the size by changing the yarn size and hook.

This post contains affiliate links for WeCrochet. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Welcome to the July Pinterest Challenge! The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen!

This month’s challenge is Tutti Fruit – fruit themed fun.

Funny that our June Pinterest Challenge for 2019 was Summer, and I shared a Watermelon Slice Sunglass Pouch. I used the same pin as my inspiration for this applique – the pin link does not go to the tutorial – the original owner redirected it to a new site that does not do DIY, so it’s purely inspiration.

You can find more Summer ideas in my Seasonal: Summer Time board.

What can you do with an applique? Sew it onto a granny square, garment or beanie, glue it onto the front of a card, starch it to create a pendant for a necklace or earring, make a bunch and string them together as a garland… Just to name a few ideas.

Materials:

  • Small Amount of Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn in White, Black, Fiesta Red and Jalapeno
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Yarn Alternatives:

Lily Sugar n Cream and Red Heart Smoothie are similar to WeCrochet Dishie, but the beauty of this project is that you can use any weight yarn with the respective crochet hook, and it just changes up the finished size of the applique.

Weaving in ends of a tough yarn, like cotton yarn, can be hard on the fingers. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to [carefully] help pull the tapestry needle through the work.

Time Spent:

I had my applique finished in just under 20 minutes.

Measurements:

4.13″ Wide by 2.38″ Tall (2.56″ if you edge the top)

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • How to Crochet a Bobble: All in the same stitch (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) 4x, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops

Pattern Notes:

I worked two different versions – one with and one without a finished edge. I thought I would like it better with the finished edge, but I think I like it better without.

This one is without the edge.

And this one has the single edge along the top.

Pattern:

In red, chain 2. Work 5 HDC into the 2nd chain. (5 HDC)

R2: Chain 2 (counts as a DC), turn. DC into the 1st stitch, (2 DC into each of the next 4 stitches). (10 DC)

R3: Chain 1, turn. 2 SC into the 1st stitch, in black: bobble into the next stitch, (in red: 2 SC into the next stitch, in black: bobble into the next stitch) 3x, fasten off black, with red: SC into each of the next two stitches. Fasten off red. (14 stitches)

R4: In white, chain 1 and turn. Work 2 HDC into the 1st stitch, HDC into the next 2 stitches, (2 HDC into the next stitch, HDC into each of the next 2 stitches) 4x, 2 HDC into the next stitch, HDC into the next stitch. Fasten off white. (19 HDC)

R5: In green, chain 2 (counts as a DC) and turn. DC into the 1st stitch, DC into each of the next 3 stitches, (2 DC into the next stitch, DC into each of the next 3 stitches) 3x, 2 DC into the next stitch, DC into each of the next 2 stitches. (24 DC)

If you want to work a straight edge along the top, chain 1 and turn, then SC across.

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Welcome!

Welcome!

Hey! I'm Alexandra, the blogger and creator behind EyeLoveKnots and On Rockwood Lane! My passion is being creative. My favorite thing to do is crochet, and you will almost always find me having a cup of coffee and working on a new crochet project, but when I'm not doing that, you might find me out at a local park rollerblading, baking some fresh cookies, picking veggies in the garden or re-decorating for a new season or holiday. My two cats are great supervisors for all my adventures (minus the being outside because they think it's too hot in Florida to be anywhere but inside), and make sure I take plenty of breaks.
