This is a free crochet pattern for how-to make my new Watermelon Slice Sunglass Pouch!
Welcome to the June Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures. The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate all the participants of this hop (and you too) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This month, I am sharing a fun, easy and quick little crochet pattern perfect for the Summer staple seen everywhere – sunglasses! And what better than a sweet slice of Watermelon?! Watch the seeds π
My inspiration comes from a felt watermelon sunglass case I found HERE, though the link does not go to the tutorial – the original owner redirected it to a new site that does not do DIY, so it’s purely inspiration.
You can find more Summer ideas in my Seasonal: Summer Time board.

Materials:
- Small Amount of Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn – I used Lily Sugar n Cream in White, Red, Black and Dark Pine [Green] colorways
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- #18 Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives: WeCrochet Dishie, Red Heart Smoothie
Because this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and going in and out of a bag, I recommend cotton yarn.
Jewelry pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle.
Time Spent:
Just a little over 30 minutes
Measurements:
3 3/8″ Wide (after folding) by 7 1/8″ Tall – will fit a standard pair of sunglasses
Gauge:
16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4β x 4β OR In Pattern, Round 3 = 3 1/8″ in diameter
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- How to Crochet a Bobble: All in the same stitch (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) 4x, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops
Pattern Notes:
If your circle begins cupping (not laying flat), begin with 12 DC into the ring instead of 10 HDC, and continue in pattern with the next stitch counts being 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, and omitted Row 7 (unless height isn’t met). As of right now, I haven’t tested this, but I would like to – my piece cupped a little more than I’d like, but after I sewed close, it’s not noticeable at all.
Beginning stitch count does not count as a stitch, and joining is to first stitch, not beginning chain.
I work my in the round increases differently than most to help keep my seam straight, and it will be written as such.
Pattern:
In Red, chain 5. Slip stitch join to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 10 HDC into the ring. Join. (10 HDC)
R2: Chain 2. DC into the 1st HDC, (2 DC into each of the next 9 HDC), DC into the next/first stitch. Join. (20 DC)
R3: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st DC, In Black: Bobble into the next DC, (In Red: 2 SC into the next DC, In Black: Bobble into the next DC) 4x & fasten off black, (2 HDC into the next DC, HDC into the next DC) 5x, SC into the next/first stitch. Join. (30 stitches)
R4: Chain 2, turn. DC into the first 3 stitch, (2 DC into the next stitch, DC into each of the next 2 stitches) 9x, DC into the next/first stitch. Join, and switch to White/fasten off Red. (40 DC)
R5: In White, chain 2. DC into the first 3 DC, (2 DC into the next DC, DC into each of the next 3 DC) 9x, DC into the next/first stitch. Join, and switch to Dark Green/fasten off Red. (50 DC)
R6: In Dark Green, chain 2. DC into the first 4 DC, (2 DC into the next DC, DC into each of the next 4 DC) 9x, DC into the next/first stitch. Join. (60 DC)
R7: Chain 1. HDC into the first 5 DC, (2 HDC into the next DC, HDC into each of the next 5 DC) 9x, HDC into the next/first stitch. Join. (70 DC)
Your sunglass pouch should now measure 7 1/8″ in diameter. Check it, if not, work Round 7 in DC instead of HDC. If it’s a greater distance away, add another round of increase.
Fasten off – may choose to weave ends in at this time as they are easier to get to.
Finish:
Turn to WS facing, and fold in half with the seeds equal on one side. Keep in mind that your sunglasses will slide in with the top of the sunglasses against the inside, and the bottom of the sunglasses following the curve of the watermelon, so stitch up the way you want them to face.
Skip the 1st 11 stitches (equals 3″ wide) and attach yarn to the 12th stitch through both layers. Chain 1, and slip stitch through both layers all the way down.
Fasten off, and weave in any remaining ends.
I did not add a flap to mine, but you could easily attach yarn at the top, and work a little flap, and attach with a snap button, or make a loop, and attach to a regular button – up to you!
