This Watermelon Sunglass Pouch was originally published in June of 2019 as part of the June Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures, where the goal was to motivate all the participants of the hop (and makers like you) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This challenge is no longer active, but you’ll find some great projects from fellow co-hosts at the end of this post.

My inspiration for this crocheted sunglass pouch comes from a felt watermelon sunglass case I found, though the link does not go to the tutorial – the original owner redirected it to a new site that does not do DIY, so it’s purely inspiration.

From the felt project, I pulled the same color pattern of red, white and green, and I absolutely loved how the seeds were in the same round pattern. On my watermelon vine arose a crocheted pouch that was fun, easy and quick to work up for the Summer staple seen everywhere – sunglasses!

This Watermelon Sunglass Pouch is featured in the Fun & Fruity Crafting Event hosted on my Yarn Crafts & Coffee blog.

Yarn Talk:

Originally, I used Lily Sugar n Cream in the White, Red, Black and Dark Pine [Green] colorways. I have since stopped using Lily Sugar n Cream Yarn because it is not colorfast, which means the colors fade and bleed after washing the project (or getting caught in the rain). Now, for 100% cotton yarn, I love using Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, WeCrochet Dishie and Cascade Nifty Cotton as they’re all colorfast. I also like Queensland Coastal Cotton, which are colorfast as well, but I couldn’t find the right colors to match in these yarns.

Because this bag will most likely see a lot of use, and going in and out of a bag, I recommend cotton yarn as it’s more durable than say an acrylic yarn.

Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 Yarn is a versatile cotton yarn made of 100% cotton, that is also colorfast. It’s softer than the tough cotton yarns you may imagine for projects like washcloths and bags, but not as soft as pima cotton. The 4/6 size is a heavy worsted weight #4 yarn a teeny bit thicker than Lily Sugar n Cream if you’re familiar. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, 2026, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 58 colors – as well as in Lightweight #3.

WeCrochet Dishie (aka Knit Picks Dishie) is a versatile, soft worsted weight #4 yarn made of 100% cotton. It’s on the lighter side for worsted weight working up similarly to Cascade Nifty Cotton, Queensland Coastal Cotton and I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 83 colors.

Tools & Notions:

We have lots of great crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop. The most popular, and preferred by Candace and Emily, are the Clover Amour Crochet Hooks with the soft handles and smooth metal hook. Alexandra prefers metal crochet hooks with large, ergonomic clay handles and just loves the fun designs from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! If your preference is wood, the LYKKE brand are lovely, smooth and sturdy.

Tapestry Needles with the blunt, round end are essential for sewing and finishing on a number of yarn crafts, including crocheting, knitting as well as needlepointing on fabric and plastic canvas. The blunt, rounded end allows the needle to pass easily through the fabric created by yarn and holes on canvas without snagging (or getting your fingers) in the process. More specifically for crocheting and knitting, a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle makes weaving, grafting and sewing so much easier on the hands. The long oval eye makes threading strands of yarn easier, though you may still want to use a needle threader.

Scissors are an essential tool. When I’m working on the go, I like to carry a pair of folding scissors as they fit perfectly in even the tiniest of bags. When I am working at home or have more space in my bag for a larger notions pouch, I like to use a pair of lightweight, all-purpose scissors as they are so versatile and great for a variety of things from cutting plastic canvas mesh to trimming yarn ends after weaving in to cutting out a care card to include with a handmade gift.

Jewelry Pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in the ends of tough yarns, such as cotton yarns and chunkier yarns, that can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to help pull the tapestry needle through the work. Make sure the eye of the needle is facing up so you can see directly down it and carefully pull, wiggling as needed. If it gets caught and you tug too hard, it will break the eye of your needle.

Time Spent:

Just a little over 30 minutes

Measurements:

3 3/8″ Wide (after folding) by 7 1/8″ Tall – will fit a standard pair of sunglasses

Gauge:

  • In Pattern, Round 3 = 3 1/8″ in diameter
  • or 16 HDC by 10 Rows = 4” x 4”

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • HDC – Half Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial | Video Tutorial)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Special Stitch:

How to Crochet a Bobble: All in the same stitch (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through 2 loops) 4x, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops

Pattern Notes:

Beginning stitch count does not count as a stitch, and joining is to first stitch, not beginning chain.

I work my crown and body differently than most to help keep my seam straight, and that is that the first stitch from the first set of increases is done in the first stitch of the round, which will appear just to left of the beginning chain, then the round will be worked as normal, and the final stitch of the round will be the second stitch of the first set of increases, and it will be worked into the same stitch as the first, and appear just to the right of the beginning chain. The photo above shows where the first and last stitch are worked, and I have a photo tutorial of this technique in my How to Keep a Straight Seam post. You can work in your preferred increase method as long as we end up with the same stitches at the end of the round.

To change yarn colors, work up to the last yarn over of the last stitch. With the new color, yarn over and count that as the last yarn over. Pull through with the new color. I have a photo tutorial of this technique in my How to Change Yarn Colors post – it’s the first technique.

Pattern:

In Red, chain 4. Slip stitch join to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 10 HDC into the ring. Join. (10 HDC)

R2: Chain 2. DC into the 1st HDC, (2 DC into each of the next 9 HDC), DC into the same stitch as the first. Join. (20 DC)

R3: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st DC, In Black: Bobble into the next DC, (In Red: 2 SC into the next DC, In Black: Bobble into the next DC) 4x & fasten off black, (2 HDC into the next DC, HDC into the next DC) 5x, SC into the same stitch as the first. Join. (30 stitches)

R4: Chain 2, turn. DC into the first 3 stitches, (2 DC into the next stitch, DC into each of the next 2 stitches) 9x, DC into the same stitch as the first. Join, and switch to White. Fasten off Red. (40 DC)

R5: In White, chain 2. DC into the first 3 DC, (2 DC into the next DC, DC into each of the next 3 DC) 9x, DC into the same stitch as the first. Join, and switch to Dark Green. Fasten off Red. (50 DC)

R6: In Dark Green, chain 2. DC into the first 4 DC, (2 DC into the next DC, DC into each of the next 4 DC) 9x, DC into the same stitch as the first. Join. (60 DC)

R7: Chain 1. HDC into the first 5 DC, (2 HDC into the next DC, HDC into each of the next 5 DC) 9x, HDC into the same stitch as the first. Join. (70 DC)

Your sunglass pouch should now measure 7 1/8″ in diameter. Check it, if not, work Round 7 in DC instead of HDC. If it’s a greater distance away, add another round of increase.

Fasten off – may choose to weave ends in at this time as they are easier to get to.

Finish:

Turn to the wrong side (aka back side) facing, and fold in half with the seeds equal on one side. Keep in mind that your sunglasses will slide in with the top of the sunglasses against the inside, and the bottom of the sunglasses following the curve of the watermelon, so stitch up the way you want them to face.

Skip the 1st 11 stitches (equals 3″ wide) and attach yarn to the 12th stitch through both layers. Chain 1, and slip stitch through both layers all the way down.

Fasten off, and weave in any remaining ends.

I did not add a flap to mine, but you could easily attach yarn at the top, and work a little flap, and attach with a snap button, or make a loop, and attach to a regular button – up to you!
