This Watermelon Slice Applique was originally published in July of 2019 as part of the July Pinterest Challenge Blog Hop, hosted by My Pinterventures, where the goal was to motivate all the participants of the hop (and makers like you) to not just pin, but to make it happen! This challenge is no longer active, but you’ll find some great projects from fellow co-hosts at the end of this post.
My inspiration for this crocheted watermelon applique comes from a felt watermelon sunglass case I found, though the link does not go to the tutorial – the original owner redirected it to a new site that does not do DIY, so it’s purely inspiration.
From the felt project, I pulled the same color pattern of red, white and green, and I absolutely loved how the seeds were in the same round pattern. On my watermelon vine arose a crocheted applique that was fun, quick to work up and super cute for a tutti frutti theme.
What can you do with a crochet applique? Sew it onto a granny square, garment or beanie, glue it onto the front of a card, starch it to create a pendant for a necklace or earring, make a bunch and string them together as a garland… Just to name a few ideas.

This Watermelon Slice Applique is featured in the Fun & Fruity Crafting Event hosted on my Yarn Crafts & Coffee blog.

Materials:
- Small Amount of Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie Yarn in White, Black, Fiesta Red and Jalapeno
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Yarn Talk:
For 100% cotton yarn, I love using Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, WeCrochet Dishie and Cascade Nifty Cotton because they’re colorfast, which means the colors are set so I don’t have to worry about the colors fading or bleeding when using or washing the project, but as an applique, you can reach for any fiber yarn that matches your project, and you can also use any weight yarn with the respective crochet hook to achieve different sizes of the applique.

WeCrochet Dishie (aka Knit Picks Dishie) is a versatile, soft worsted weight #4 yarn made of 100% cotton. It’s on the lighter side for worsted weight working up similarly to Cascade Nifty Cotton, Queensland Coastal Cotton and I Love This Cotton from Hobby Lobby. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 83 colors.

Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6 Yarn is a versatile cotton yarn made of 100% cotton, that is also colorfast. It’s softer than the tough cotton yarns you may imagine for projects like washcloths and bags, but not as soft as pima cotton. The 4/6 size is a heavy worsted weight #4 yarn a teeny bit thicker than Lily Sugar n Cream if you’re familiar. It’s machine washable and dryable making projects easy to care for. As of June 1st, 2026, it is available in an amazing number of colors – 58 colors – as well as in Lightweight #3.

Because the applique jumps from the seed row to the row of white and doesn’t have an extra row of red in between, as is the applique works best visually in worsted weight #4, chunky weight #5 and super chunky weight #6 yarns. If you’d like to use a lighter weight yarn, I recommend adding an additional row to the pattern after row 3 in solid red across.
Tools & Notions:
We have lots of great crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop. The most popular, and preferred by Candace and Emily, are the Clover Amour Crochet Hooks with the soft handles and smooth metal hook. Alexandra prefers metal crochet hooks with large, ergonomic clay handles and just loves the fun designs from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! If your preference is wood, the LYKKE brand are lovely, smooth and sturdy.

BronzeShepherdStudio has a cute Polymer Clay Watermelon Crochet Hook and Stitch Marker set that would match perfectly with your crocheted watermelon.
Tapestry Needles with the blunt, round end are essential for sewing and finishing on a number of yarn crafts, including crocheting, knitting as well as needlepointing on fabric and plastic canvas. The blunt, rounded end allows the needle to pass easily through the fabric created by yarn and holes on canvas without snagging (or getting your fingers) in the process. More specifically for crocheting and knitting, a Bent Tip Tapestry Needle makes weaving, grafting and sewing so much easier on the hands. The long oval eye makes threading strands of yarn easier, though you may still want to use a needle threader.
Jewelry Pliers are an excellent tool to use to help weave in the ends of tough yarns, such as cotton yarns and chunkier yarns, that can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Sore thumbs and frustration can be a thing of the past by simply using jewelry pliers to help pull the tapestry needle through the work. Make sure the eye of the needle is facing up so you can see directly down it and carefully pull, wiggling as needed. If it gets caught and you tug too hard, it will break the eye of your needle.
Time Spent:
I had my applique finished in just under 20 minutes.

Pattern Notes:
Because it jumps from the seed row to the row of white and doesn’t have an extra row of red in between, as is the applique works best visually in worsted weight #4, chunky weight #5 and super chunky weight #6 yarns. If you’d like to use a lighter weight yarn, I recommend adding an additional row to the pattern after row 3 in solid red across.
To change yarn colors, work up to the last yarn over of the last stitch. With the new color, yarn over and count that as the last yarn over. Pull through with the new color. I have a photo tutorial of this technique in my How to Change Yarn Colors post – it’s the first technique.

I worked two different versions – one with and one without a finished edge. I thought I would like it better with the finished edge, but I think I like it better without.

This one is without the edge.

And this one has the single edge along the top.
Pattern:
In red, chain 2. Work 5 HDC into the 2nd chain. (5 HDC)
R2: Chain 2 (counts as a DC), turn. DC into the 1st stitch, (2 DC into each of the next 4 stitches). (10 DC)
R3: Chain 1, turn. 2 SC into the 1st stitch, in black: bobble into the next stitch, (in red: 2 SC into the next stitch, in black: bobble into the next stitch) 3x, fasten off black, with red: SC into each of the next two stitches. Fasten off red. (14 stitches)
R4: In white, chain 1 and turn. Work 2 HDC into the 1st stitch, HDC into the next 2 stitches, (2 HDC into the next stitch, HDC into each of the next 2 stitches) 4x, 2 HDC into the next stitch, HDC into the next stitch. Fasten off white. (19 HDC)
R5: In green, chain 2 (counts as a DC) and turn. DC into the 1st stitch, DC into each of the next 3 stitches, (2 DC into the next stitch, DC into each of the next 3 stitches) 3x, 2 DC into the next stitch, DC into each of the next 2 stitches. (24 DC)
If you want to work a straight edge along the top, chain 1 and turn, then SC across.
Fasten off, and weave in ends.

These are so cute!! Thanks for joining in on Home Matters Linky Party! I will be featuring your post this week! #HomeMattersParty xx
Alexandra, love your watermelon crochet potholders!! I had a big watemelon one for years but I think I gave it to one of my adult kids, probably my son as he has a 6 yr. old son. They are really fun and perfect for scrubbing dishes or using as hotplates (if big enough). Happily share this pattern, too, for you at SYS #502 this week. <3
Happy crafting,
Barb 🙂
Thank you, Barb! I think these are great for lots of things, including scrubbies! I appreciate the feature. I stopped by, but I missed the party this week. Looking forward to visiting for the next party.
