What Supplies Do I Need to Crochet a Mini Stocking?

  • 45 Yards (20 Grams) in Total of Worsted Weight Yarn – I used Lion Brand Pound of Love Yarn in White plus Cherry, Oxford Grey and Olive
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

Material Notes:

Feel free to substitute the Pound of Love for your favorite worsted weight yarn. Gauge is not essential for this project. You could even go with a chunky weight yarn and respective size hook for a larger stocking.

I love my ergonomic clay hooks from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! They both have so many fun designs. I have several from each shop because they’re so darn cute and nice to hold onto! We also have lots of beautiful, handcrafted crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop as well!

How Long Does it Take to Crochet a Mini Stocking?

Just under 45 minutes.

Measurements & Gauge:

Gauge is not essential for this decor project, but if you want your stocking to be about the same size as mine, you can check your gauge with the diameter after Round 2. Lion Brand Pound of Love, much like Red Heart Super Saver, varies in thickness and that can be per color or per skein, so as you can see below, I made 3 stockings and I got 3 different measurements for each one. I used White as the base for all of them so even if you meet my gauge after Round 2, your stocking can still end up in the ranges I’ve provided depending on the thickness of the yarn you’re working with.

  • Diameter in White: 1 3/4″
  • Wide across Body: Red: 2 7/8″, Gray: 2 3/4″, Green: 2 7/8″
  • Wide across middle including Heel: Red: 3 1/4″, Gray: 3 1/8″, Green: 3 1/4″
  • Height (not including Hanger): Red: 5 7/8″, Gray: 6″, Green: 6 1/8″
  • Hanger: 1″ Tall

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • TR – Treble Crochet
  • Mod-TR – Modified Treble Crochet
  • SC2tog – Single Crochet Two Stitches Together (to Decrease)

To Treble Crochet: yarn over 2 times so there are 3 loops on your hook, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over and pull through (4 loops on hook), then (yarn over and pull through 2 loops) 3x.

I’ve added a modified treble crochet in sound rounds because working the last treble crochet as normal can flatten out after it’s joined, and by working in this modified manner, the stitch retains it’s puffy texture. If you notice the last treble crochet of any other round flattens after joining, feel free to replace the last treble crochet with this modified version.

To work a Mod-TR: Yarn over 3x, insert hook, yarn over and pull through (5 loops). (Yarn over, pull through 2) 2x, yarn over, pull through last 3.

To SC2tog: Insert your hook into the first stitch, yarn over and pull through (2 loops). Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull through (3 loops). Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Pattern Notes:

We will alternate between a textured round that combines single crochets and treble crochets, followed by a round of just single crochet. Each time you are looking at the flat back side, you will work a textured round so the treble crochets will pop out on the front, and each time you are looking at the textured front side, you will work a simple round of single crochet all the way around.

When working the single crochet rounds, you will notice the top of the treble crochet stitches will have fallen to the back of the fabric. If you have a tough time seeing your stitch, you may need to rotate your fabric forward to see better.

If you want to alter the width of the mini stocking, you’ll want to increase up to a number of stitches that is divisible by 2 for the stitch pattern to work out evenly. If you add rounds to the beginning, you may want to add rows to the Heel – this does change the stitch count so you may need to adjust Row 1 of the Body to account for Heel changes working towards a stitch count that is divisible by 2 as well.

If you want to alter the height of the mini stocking, add or subtract rows by 2 – this is the repeat.

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

Slip stitch join to the first stitch of the round.

I work my crown and body differently than most to help keep my seam straight, and that is that the first stitch from the first set of increases is done in the first stitch of the round, which will appear just to left of the beginning chain, then the round will be worked as normal, and the final stitch of the round will be the second stitch of the first set of increases, and it will be worked into the same stitch as the first, and appear just to the right of the beginning chain. The photo above shows where the first and last stitch are worked, and I have a photo tutorial of this technique in my How to Keep a Straight Seam post. You can work in your preferred increase method as long as we end up with the same stitches at the end of the round.

For the most seamless color change, after joining, turn to the new working side. Pull the new color through, then pull the original color tight (it will disappear). Work the round as written, but before joining, move the previous color to the inside so it won’t be visible from the right side of the stocking. Feel free to replace this method with the more common way of changing in the last yarn over of the previous stitch, or fastening off at the end of each color change and reattaching the new color.

Weave in as you go as this is the easiest time to reach many of the spots.

The pattern refers to CC, which is the color you’ll use for the beginning two rounds of the toe, the heel and the top edging, and MC, which is the main color for the body.

Aligned Cobble Stitch Mini Stocking Written Pattern:

Crown of the Toe up to Heel:

In CC, chain 5. Slip stitch join to form a ring. Chain 1. Traditionally, we leave the beginning tail end on the backside and hold it against our ring to work over it in this round, but for stocking, we want to bring the beginning tail to the front side of the fabric. Still crochet over it like you would normally so you can easily pull the center ring closed after. Work 10 SC into the center ring. Slip stitch join. (10 SC)

R2: Chain 1, turn. Work 1 SC into the first stitch, 2 SC in each of the next 9 SCs, and 1 SC into the last stitch. Join with MC and fasten off CC. (20 SC)

R3: In MC, chain 1 and turn. SC into the 1st stitch, TR into the next stitch, (SC into the next stitch, TR into the next stitch) around. Join. (20 stitches)

R4: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each SC around. Join. (20 SC)

R5 – 8: Repeat Rounds 3 – 4.

R9: Chain 1 and turn. SC into the 1st stitch, (TR into the next stitch, SC into the next stitch) 9x, Mod-TR into the next stitch. Join. (20 stitches)

R10: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each SC around. Join with CC and fasten off MC. (20 SC)

Heel of Mini Stocking:

R1: In MC, chain 1, and turn. SC into the 1st 3 stitches. (3 SC)

R2: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st 3 SC, SC into the next stitch of R10 that the beginning chain of R1 is coming out from, slip stitch into the next stitch. (4 SC)

R3: Chain 1, turn. Skip the slip stitch, SC into each of the next 4 SC, SC into the next stitch of R10 where the last SC of R1 is worked, slip stitch into the next stitch. (5 SC)

R4: Chain 1, turn. Skip the slip stitch, SC into each of the next 5 SC, SC into the same stitch as the last slip stitch of R2, slip stitch into the next stitch. (6 SC)

R5: Chain 1, turn. Skip the slip stitch, SC into each of the next 6 SC, SC into the same stitch as the last slip stitch of R3, slip stitch into the next stitch. (7 SC)

R6: Chain 1, turn. Skip the slip stitch, SC into each of the next 7 SC, SC into the same stitch as the last slip stitch of R4, slip stitch into the next stitch. Switch to MC and fasten off CC. (8 SC)

Body of Mini Stocking:

R1: In MC, chain 1 and turn. SC into the same stitch as the slip stitch, (TR into the next stitch, SC into the next stitch) 4x, Mod-TR into the next stitch of the body (which is the same stitch as the heel and lines up with the TR of R9), SC into the next stitch, (TR into the next stitch, SC into the next stitch) 5x. Join. (21 stitches)

R2: Chain 1, turn. SC2tog over the 1st 2 stitches, SC into each of the next 19 stitches around. (20 SC)

R3: Chain 1 and turn. SC into the 1st stitch, (TR into the next stitch, SC into the next stitch) 9x, Mod-TR into the next stitch. Join. (20 stitches)

R4: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each SC around. Join. (20 SC)

R5 – 9: Repeat Rounds 3 – 4. In the final join, do so with CC and fasten off MC. (20 SC)

R10 – 11: Chain 1, turn. SC into the 1st SC, and each SC around. Join. (20 SC)

Fasten off, and weave in remaining ends.

I did not add any hangers to the Little Pebbles Mini Stockings, but you can see an example on my Through the Window Mini Stocking. This would be helpful if you wanted to hang or string up your stockings. If you plan on hanging them on your tree as ornaments, it is easy to leave off the hanger and use a traditional metal ornament hanger.

Hanger (Optional):

Chain 11. SC into the 2nd chain, and each chain across. (10 SC)

Fasten off with longer tail for sewing.

Weave in initial tail end.

Thread longer tail end into tapestry needle. Flatten stocking to crease the point at the top right side of opening that is just above the heel. Grab stocking, and pop open. Form a “U” shape with the hanger, and place the ends of the hanger inside the stocking even with the bottom of Round 11, just above where the coordinating color meets it – I did so with the tail end side to the left of the crease, and the other to the right of the crease. Whipstitch in place along the inside stitches of Round 11 – do not work your needle all the way through to see the needle come from the right side of the stocking, just work through the top layer on the wrong side of the stocking. Whipstitch all the way across covering both ends, then whipstitch back across. Weave in into the bulkiness of the seam, and then fasten off.
