This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet a quick and easy floral gift card holder that also works great as a tea bag pocket. It’s worked in a small amount of yarn making it perfect for those scraps in your stash!

It’s May! You know what that means? Time for April Showers Bring May Flowers! Last year, I shared a Forget me Not Applique, Easy Floral Coasters, an Easy Floral Coin Purse, Lily’s Floral Table Runner and Lily’s Floral Wall Hanging.

So far this month, we’ve got Lily’s Floral Mug Rug. I actually made this little holder the same time I made the mug rug because I thought it would be a great duo as a mug rug for your cup and a pocket to hold/gift a tea bag…

… but afterwards, I got to thinking it would make a great gift card holder too, which is just as fitting! You can gift it with a bag of coffee (New England Coffee brand is my FAVORITE!), some flavored coffee creamers and a new mug, like this Hanging Plants Coffee Mug I got from MoonwakeDesignsCo on Etsy. The gift card for on the go, and the rest for at home enjoyment!
Honestly, you can use it to gift many things like a couple Ghirardelli chocolate squares, a stick or two of biscotti, or even non-foodie gifts like a pair of earrings on a card or small floral picks.

If you choose to use this adorable crocheted floral pocket to gift a tea bag or two, and you want a gift card holder too, I like this printable floral one from Rachellola.

Materials:
- 30 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn Total – I used WeCrochet Dishie in (MC) Bumblebee for the flower center, and in (CB) Begonia for the petals
- H8/5mm Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
- Optional, Jewelry Pliers
Material Notes:
Yarn Alternatives to Dishie: Lily Sugar n Cream, Red Heart’s Smoothie
Each flower requires almost 12 yards of yarn.
The gauge and finished size is not essential for this project so any worsted weight yarn from your stash will work. Cotton yarn will appear thinner and have more definition than acrylic so it’s possible a worsted weight acrylic yarn would produce a slightly larger flower.
I usually recommend jewelry pliers to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Dishie Yarn is really smooth, and easy to weave the yarn in and out of.
Time Spent:
- Flowers: Just over 15 minutes each.
- Holder: Just over 45 minutes.
Measurements:
- Flower: Taken from the position of one petal at the top center, 3.63″ wide by 4.13″ from tip of top petal to tip of bottom petal
- Holder: 3.81″ wide from first SC to last of assembly by 4.25″ tall from top of top petal to tip of bottom petal
Abbreviations (US Terms):
- SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
- DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:
Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
Join to the first stitch of the round, not the beginning chain.
How I worked my yarn color change: after joining, turn to the new working side. Pull the new color through, then pull the original color tight (it will disappear).
You can also work in the more traditional ways of pulling new color through in the last yarn over of the previous stitch (I do have a basic photo tutorial if needed – How to Change Yarn Colors in Crochet) or fastening off the center color, and rejoining the new color in any stitch, but I find the way I did it much easier, and it hides the color change.
I work my increases a little different than most, and that is that the first stitch from the first set of increases is done in the first stitch of the round, which will appear just to left of the beginning chain, then the round will be worked as normal, and the final stitch of the round will be the second stitch of the first set of increases, and it will be worked into the same stitch as the first, and appear just to the right of the beginning chain. You can see a photo tutorial of this in my How to Keep a Straight Seam post.
Though there are only three rounds, and a straight seam isn’t really an issue, this is my preferred method – you can work in your preferred increase method for the center as long as you end up with 24 stitches.

Flower – Make 2:
In Yellow, chain 5. Slip stitch to the first chain to form a ring. Chain 1. Work 12 DC into the ring. Join. (12 DC)
R2: Chain 2. DC into the 1st DC, 2 DC into each of the next 11 DC, DC into the same DC as the 1st. Join with CB, and fasten off Yellow. (24 DC)
R3: In CB, chain 1. SC into the 1st stitch, skip the next stitch, (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, [SC into the next stitch, skip the next stitch, (3 DC, chain 2, 3 DC) into the next stitch, skip the next stitch] 5x. Join. (6 Petals, 6 SC)
Fasten off, and weave in ends.
Assembly
Place one flower with the right side facing down, and the other flower on top of it with the right side facing up, and position the whole flower to have one single petal at the top and bottom centers.

Next, join the yarn in the chain space to the left of the top center petal catching both layers of the flowers.

Chain 1. SC into this space making sure to capture both layers here and throughout.

Continue working around to the chain space of the petal to the right of the top center petal working a (SC, chain 1, SC) into each chain space except the first and last, and a single SC into each of the other stitches in between. Fasten off, and weave in all ends.

I must learn to crochet flowers! Beautiful. I can think of a million things to do with them. I’ve only ever crocheted blankets. Great idea as a gift card holder!
You are so right! I love how versatile this little flowers pattern is. Crochet blankets are nice too. I don’t have as much patience for bigger projects like that
This is so pretty and such a good idea. It would be such a unique and personal way to give a gift card. Thanks for sharing the idea. #HomeMattersParty
In the directions, what does ‘C B’ stand for?
In the Materials section, CB is listed as the color Begonia, or the second color of the flower.
