Delilah Gift Card Holder – Free Crochet Pattern | Crochet Gift Pocket for Mother’s Day

May 8, 2021

This is a free crochet pattern for how to crochet a quick and easy floral gift card holder that also works great as a tea bag pocket or for small gifts and treats. It’s worked in a small amount of yarn making it perfect for those scraps in your stash!

This post contains affiliate links for Etsy and WeCrochet. If you make a purchase by clicking on them, I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Find the free crochet pattern instructions below, or purchase a printer-friendly, ad-free PDF on Ravelry by clicking here.

I originally designed this crochet flower gift card holder for April Showers Bring May Flowers 2021!

So many

So when I made the Delilah Mug Rug. I actually made this little holder the same time I made the mug rug because I thought it would be a great duo as a mug rug for your cup and a pocket to hold/gift a tea bag…

Lily's blue and white Floral Mug Rug paired together with Lily's pink Floral Gift Card Holder, a bag of New England Coffee Butter Pecan Flavor, a Hanging Plants coffee mug, and Hazelnut coffee creamers, EyeLoveKnots

… but afterwards, I got to thinking it would make a great gift card holder too, which is just as fitting! You can gift it with a bag of coffee (New England Coffee brand is my FAVORITE!), some flavored coffee creamers and a new mug, like this Hanging Plants Coffee Mug I got from MoonwakeDesignsCo on Etsy. The gift card for on the go, and the rest for at home enjoyment!

Honestly, you can use it to gift many things like a couple Ghirardelli chocolate squares, a stick or two of biscotti, or even non-foodie gifts like a pair of earrings on a card or small floral picks.

Materials:

  • 30 Yards of Worsted Weight Yarn Total – I used WeCrochet Dishie in Bumblebee for the flower center, and in Begonia for the petals
  • H8/5mm Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle for Weaving in Ends
  • Optional, Jewelry Pliers

Material Notes:

Yarn Alternatives to Dishie: Circulo Natural Cotton Maxcolor 4/6, Queensland Coastal Cotton (like Dishie, both are colorfast, which means the colors are set, and you don’t have to worry about them fading or bleeding)

Each flower requires almost 12 yards of yarn.

Gauge is not essential for this project so any worsted weight yarn from your stash will work. Cotton yarn will be more relaxed than acrylic so you may want to go up a hook size if using a worsted weight acrylic (or wool) yarn to achieve similar size.

I love my ergonomic clay hooks from SiennasBowtique and BronzeShepherdStudio! They both have so many fun designs. I have several from each shop because they’re so darn cute and nice to hold onto! We also have lots of beautiful, handcrafted crochet hooks in our Yarn Crafts and Coffee Yarn Shop as well!

I usually recommend jewelry pliers to use to help weave in ends, as cotton yarn can be quite tough on the fingers when weaving in with just fingers and a tapestry needle. Dishie Yarn is really smooth, and easy to weave the yarn in and out of.

Time Spent:

  • Flowers: Just over 15 minutes each.
  • Holder: Just over 45 minutes.

Measurements:

  • Flower: Taken from the position of one petal at the top center, 3 5/8″ wide by 4 1/8″ from tip of top petal to tip of bottom petal
  • Holder: 3 7/8″ wide from first SC to last of assembly by 4 1/4″ tall from top of top petal to tip of bottom petal

Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • SC – Single Crochet (Photo Tutorial)
  • DC – Double Crochet (Photo Tutorial)

Pattern Notes:

Beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

Join to the first stitch of the round, not the beginning chain.

How I worked my yarn color change: after joining, turn to the new working side. Pull the new color through, then pull the original color tight (it will disappear).

You can also work in the more traditional ways of pulling new color through in the last yarn over of the previous stitch (I do have a basic photo tutorial if needed – How to Change Yarn Colors in Crochet) or fastening off the center color, and rejoining the new color in any stitch, but I find the way I did it much easier, and it hides the color change.

I work my increases a little different than most, and that is that the first stitch from the first set of increases is done in the first stitch of the round, which will appear just to left of the beginning chain, then the round will be worked as normal, and the final stitch of the round will be the second stitch of the first set of increases, and it will be worked into the same stitch as the first, and appear just to the right of the beginning chain. You can see a photo tutorial of this in my How to Keep a Straight Seam post.

Though there are only three rounds, and a straight seam isn’t really an issue, this is my preferred method – you can work in your preferred increase method for the center as long as you end up with 24 stitches.

I must learn to crochet flowers! Beautiful. I can think of a million things to do with them. I’ve only ever crocheted blankets. Great idea as a gift card holder!

You are so right! I love how versatile this little flowers pattern is. Crochet blankets are nice too. I don’t have as much patience for bigger projects like that

In the Materials section, CB is listed as the color Begonia, or the second color of the flower.
